The Swat Kat's TurboKat. VTOL Jet with an Ejectable Motorcycle(Fixed Download Links)

Recommended Posts

From my favorite childhood cartoon about humanoid cat mechanics that fought monsters in an impossibly modded f-14, I present the SwatKat's Turbokat Jet.

There are two versions of the craft. Mark I is featured in most of the pics above. It is smaller, handles better, and is built better than the Mark II. However Mark II contains the ejectable motorcycle seen here. It is a smaller, modified version of u/stetsonG's

In the show the motorcycle ejects from the craft mid flight and hits the ground running. I have not yet been able to achieve this however. The cycle never ejects straight and hits the ground with too much force. I'm hoping someone else out there might have more luck than me. This is what happens now.

SelfreliantShadowyDorado.gif

Not really how it turned out in the show.... I'd really love to see someone get it to work, I'll keep trying however.

HotKeys:

1) Rear middle basic engine

2) Mid-craft hover engine

3) Rear x3 turbo engines and x2 basic engines

4) Rear x3 basic engines (Toggle off for high altitude flight)

5) Rotate rear middle engine down for VTOL

6) Rotate rear middle engine to center(Must toggle 5 off first)

8) Open bay door for VTOL hover and cycle eject

9) Cycle eject(Mark II only)

- and = move the wings forward and back

VTOL instructions:

Takeoff

1) Rotate engine down(5), open bay door(8)

2) Toggle hover engines(1)(2)

3) Turn on SAS and RCS

4) After takeoff gear up and hover as long as you want

Transition

1) Toggle all rear engines(3)

2) Toggle 5 off then move rear middle engine to center(6)

3) Wait until you gain enough velocity before toggling the mid hover engine off(2)

4) Close bay doors(8)

Mods Needed:

B9 & the .23.5 B9 patch

Sirkut's Infernal Robotics

(I took the Skilful Mod's cannons off the cycle. If you really want them they're easy enough to pop back on.)

Oh and kerbpaint, I can't recomend that mod enough, there's no reason not to have it. If you don't though it's fine, the ship will load like this.

61DzeOK.png

Really Important Information about the delta wings

For this ship I tweaked the delta wings to make them contain fuel. I have discovered something interesting about fueled parts. Because the craft was built and saved with my fueled wings they will remain fueled until you discard them from the ship. Even if you don't have my fueled .cfg the wings should still contain fuel. I tested this by loading the .craft into a stock copy of kerbal and it seemed to work. If you load the .craft and the Delta Wings don't have fuel, please let me know asap.

Mind. Blown. That is one seriously creative and well-built craft! The rotating rear engine, like that on the F-35 is just too awesome! Do you know where we can download Kerbpaint, now that the Spaceport is down?

Thanks a lot, it seriously turned out better than I could have ever imagined. I had already created a VTOL with a rotating engine, you can see it on the right side of my signature, so I learned that trick a while ago. I didn't put too much work into the cycle landing because I moved onto another cartoon inspired craft that I'm equally excited about. Hint on reddit later today

Kerbpaint really lets it go the extra mile though. I updated the post so you can find it there now.

Very impressive design here Clown_baby!

You're clearly ok with mods so just use realchutes and put one on the bike.

Yeah chutes just seem kind of lame to me for this. Maybe just because they don't use them in the show. It just hits the ground full speed. I tried using separation boosters to slow it down but they are too powerful and just fling the thing back into the air.

The cycle actually has a chute on it right now because I couldn't thing of anything. Still doesn't land straight though...

Nice but the turbocat uses the air intake's to hover.

But i love the carcobay and the bike

If you want i can post pic's on how i made the airintake's for the turbocat.

Maby you can make a box en drop the bike in that.

I'm not going to call him out for not being able to make the intakes into reversible thrusters. I will, though, say it'd be cool to see maybe the intakes changed into toggle-able mini engines, (Intake > Small fuel tank> Engine) that could rotate downward.

Also, if you check out some of the videos of the Halo drop-tank replicas people seem to like making, you might have some direction on making the motorcycle survive the drop.

I loved the show as a kid, but lack the patience to figure out how to make a turbokat myself... I might have to download this thing.

Oh damn man, I did a quick google search before I started but I didn't see yours, or any really. I couldn't believe I was the first one to build one. I just saw yours and it's awesome, feel free to post pics or a link to it. I know that's how it works in the show I just thought it looked so good with those bay doors. I guess that's my own personal touch on the thing.

I had been thinking of ways to use the intakes as thrusters. I could take the ramAirIntake model and write a .cfg that gave them thrust and a smoke animation, then have them rotate just like yours. I think that would be pretty cool.

I also thought about just making my own part, but that would be more work. But your's is awesome. Nice work. We should try and combine the two

I'm happy that I'm inspiring people :)

Great, smooth craft,

Keep it up! ;)

Thanks a lot man. I hope you like it, I only downloaded your f35 but I learned a lot from it.

I felt the need to mention you because I got the idea of how to attach the body to the cockpit from that ship. It's not exactly the same but it's definitely inspired by your design. I don't know if you can tell, but I used a girder attached to the front face of the cockpit as an attachment for the body, leaving the rear node of the cockpit open.

This is just AWESOME!

And would you kindly make a separate craft-file for the motorcycle without guns? It is way too cool, I want it for Duna ^_^

Hey thanks a lot, glad you like it.

It's here now. I wont lie to you it doesn't work great. I didn't put a lot of time into it, but let me know if you can make it any better.

Oh damn I totally missed this comment somehow. I explain in the comment below yours that I believe I could make the intakes toggle into engines, and give them just the smoke effects to look like they're blasting out air. It might be kind of hard without being able to open the parts in unity however.

I've had trouble with my custom parts making the effects like the fire and smoke point the direction I want. If I set the intakes up with the affects as they are they would be blasting backwards into the ship, not forwards out of the intake.

Then instead of basic engines here they could still be intakes on soulreaver1981's

VrOfm1l.jpg

I need to figure out how to reverse the thrust and animation in the .cfg

As for the drop-tank, thanks for the idea, I'll look into it

i made a new version of the turbo cat and it is nice :)

It has a cargo bay and a gun that can lower down 0_0

No b9 part.

Ps thanks for the rep and for the reverse trust you maby have give it a negative nummer (-100%) something like this maby, just a idea.

Well, for the Cyclotron(Yes, I googled to look up the proper name), you could use aircraft gear while landing to protect the drive wheels from exploding. Apparently, the rear cockpit actually comes down with the bike, and then pieces retract to make it an open air vehicle.

Mid Deployment:

Deployed:

Not sure how you're going to manage that, but it'd be cool if you did. Also, it seems that the bike can actually hold both pilots, which is strange, because there seems to be two different versions.

We have the two seater version here:

cyclotron-013.jpg

and the single seater here:

I AM ALL SORTS OF CONFUSED NOW.

Welcome to 90's cartoons. When gadgets are involved, the plot determines the boundaries. I'm beginning to think the animators and writers were on the same drugs as the musicians at the time. Only in a world where heroin addicted musicians rule the airwaves could something like Ren and Stimpy or Rocko's Modern Life have a chance at popularity. Oh man, those were the good 'ol days.

AAAaaanyway... You guys all have me itching to take my own shot. I did this with Lego's as a kid, I'll do it now with kerbal space program.

Come to think of it, I can't be the only one around here who is just living out their adult desire to dig out the Lego's and build things that require whooshing sounds?

Awesome I can't wait to see it. I thought about having a version with a big ol gun that lowered out of the bay. Might be able to do that and the cycle now that I wont need the engine up in there.

Hah yeah I actually did no that was it's name, but I figured it wan't close enough to call it yet. I saw a couple of those pics and figured there was no way I was replicating that. I knew the whole cockpit left the ship, but also figured that wasn't going to happen.

I tell people ksp is lego's where my imagination is replaced with a real wold physics simulator. I get all my joy out of building, I haven't been to space in a long, long time. I feel kind of bad about it

I fixed the nodes for the ramair intake. This one makes more sense, because you could say the fan reverses and uses that to lift the front end. Two of them could realistically do it, the real f-35 uses a fan.

But I think this guy would look more like the real thing. You can't really tell from this angle, but it's pumping out thrust and smoke

B9 really has to be included in kerbpaint
