Saturbo V [Version 2.0] -- Detailed Apollo Replica (NEW RELEASE - Only 381 parts!)

Recommended Posts

I definitely see where you're coming from. Using the ProcFairings mod is harder than it looks though, so builder skill should still make a huge difference. Everything I did on this was manual, so I had to do a lot of tweaking to get it right. It was just about as fiddly as the traditional building process. Also, aesthetics still play a part. Those black stripes aren't part of the fairing texture, after all.

Fair enough man. I havent had a chance to play with those farings yet so I will reserve my final judgment.

She does look sleek though.

EDIT.

how did you make a faring with a base larger than 3.75m?

I just grabbed the fairing base from the menu, then right clicked on it and used the arrows to increase the size of the base. It went past 3.75 for me -- is it limited at 3.75 for you? Also, I made sure to turn "Auto shape" off.

I really want to see a video of how procedural fairings will work in stock. I've tried to figure out how they will function based on what Harvester has described, but I can't quite visualize it.

No no, I haven't tried them yet. I really hope we can make ones larger than 3.75 with the stock ones! Otherwise, it's a major limitation..

I've already thought of a way to get around the limitation with the size. I should make a quick Ms paint sketch.

Here's what I'm thinking. The flared bit at the bottom won't be all that visible, so I think it will work. The red line is the fairing base.

The flared bit is kind of like this:

So I modified this into my favorite never-flown Saturn family concept, the Saturn INT-20.

It turned out pretty well, IMO:

And managed to make orbit with a reasonable fuel margin:

Might do the stage-and-a-half Saturn VB next.

That's fantastic! Very cool to see my craft modified. It's not the most user-friendly craft to modify. How many parts is it?

Two hundred something-ish. I didn't check when I built it. (Will note that the LEM is really difficult to take out).

How exactly did you clip the Mainsails inside one another on the S-IC? I had difficulty replicating that when trying to hash together the Saturn VB (which I'm replacing with a Saturn IB-alike, though minus the clustered tanks on the first stage. It'll be more like the "Saturn 1F," seen here: http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=13959.0;attach=93019;image).

With your blessing, I might try and duplicate the spacecraft of Eyes Turned Skywards, which is frankly one of the greatest alternate histories ever written.

To do the Mainsails, I used Editor Extensions to toggle surface attachment for one, then I placed the other on the attachment node. After that, I used offset to line them up. I may reduce the number of engines in my next version. Also, feel free to use and modify my Saturn V! All I ask is that if you post it, just mention my name in there somewhere.

So for my next version, I'm aggressively targeting part count. I'm currently at 314, down from 381. There may even be additional savings.

Oooh, shiny!

Speaking of parts count, I just checked the INT-20 - it's at 261 parts.

And, as promised (one fresh install later), Saturn IF:

Made it to orbit with a decent propellant margin:

Also threw together a quick Saturn Multibody (though no orange tanks, I'm not that much of a wizard):

Managed to orbit a full S-IVB, so it could probably be used as an alternate Apollo LV:

Looks great. What's that about orange tanks though?

Oh trust me, updating this will be the first thing I do :)

I've been waiting for 1.0 to drop to make any changes, including the ascent profile, since that will be very different now.

Oh, that's very nice to hear! I can't wait to see how it will turn out.

Thanks! :D

Status on this awesome Apollo replica? I'm looking for a good Apollo replica craft.

I haven't seen Gus for a while, now that you mention him. It would be sad if he moved on for good! But maybe he is just taking a break, and we will see more awesome stuff form him in the future.

Rune. And yeah, I do have one myself. It's a pretty interesting mission to fly, too, I shaved the margins tight, while leaving the option to make it easier for... less experienced kerbals.

I appreciate the kind words. The aero has been reshuffled a few times, so it's possible that this could work again in 1.04. I haven't really played KSP since my last post in this thread, so maybe it's time to dust it off. 1.0+ really put me off, but I also got a new job in early May, so it's not all negativity on my part that is keeping me away

I'm with you there man. I am enjoying 1.0+ less than any other version. The game is so broken now.. Ho hum. I remain hopefull Squad will sort it after the move to unity 5.

It would be good to see you back on the forums man.

Hear hear I concurr with majorjim and rune. I dont like 1.0.x changes either. But 1.0.4 is less broken. Could be easy aero fix or else you could take rune's approach and use fairings.

Gus hates the fairings as well as any other builder worth his/her salt. They are garbage and the game deserves better.
