The Official Kerbin Cup Tournament Thread - Final Entries Posted

Gotta office here shortly. ... was thinking of taking a day off, given I spent the last two days in a hundred degree house with no power, making prodigal quantities of Whackjovian soup, but, eh. Someone's gotta make the office magic happen.

When I de-office tonight, I will go over each entry with a fine toothed comb, and give my feedback. :)

Team 1 and I had the exact same idea. I had a L shaped rover that was gonna grab the parts then use rockets to tilt it up onto the wheels on it's side so I could move the parts around in an upright position. I had the claw on a rail too so I could move the legs up and down into position.

They built their's much better though. My wheels kept popping, I guess I needed to use more.

*salutes allmhuran*

You just pulled off the hardest challenge I have ever seen alone, while everyone else was working on a team. Wow.

On a side note, what does whackjob's soup consist of?:P

Edit: I know he didn't land it anywhere, but just assembling it seems like most of the battle. It's got a lot of thrust, and the girder legs are very strong. I am surprised nobody tried landing on Duna or Tylo. Probably because it was so much work to assemble!

Edit Addendum: Once more, I am deeply impressed by all the teams who worked on this challenge. Go Forum!

No one knows. It's served in a bowl approximately three kilometers in diameter and a kilometer and a half high. No one's ever climbed up the bowl to see what's in there.

My guess is, it's mostly hydrazine.

Oh, so he's only going with the small bowl this year?

I was thinking UDMH and LOX.:)

Anyway, no more soup talk! I'm sure there's a thread about soup in the Lounge. If not, there should be:P

Edit: There is no thread dedicated to the discussion of soup.:(

Just saying, you ALL over complicated the leg launchings. I used a rover with 6 SRB's and some SAS, and a claw to lift one end and when it was about 45 degrees up I fired the main leg engines and used it's fuel to get it into orbit. It broke when I timed warp due to the claw-floaty glitch but it worked VERY well until that point. I'll see if I can find the video of it.

EDIT:

Skip to 2:42. SRB's to lift the end and an extra fuel tank to mostly compensate for the weight of the leg. And sorry for low kwality. Lag called for it :P. Super fun while it lasted!

Also, Wooks, I must know where you find such appropriate GIFs.:)

Me too.

Also I'm planning on starting a "Arkingthaad ULTRA-lite" challenge and have it set just like this one with a photo gallery though with a smaller ship. Who all would participate here and would you endorse me WhackJob? :)

Shock Diamond and Team Clown_Baby have both bowed out of the competition.

Your Reddit champion is Kerb-O-Nautix!

Well thanks for the competition on the first few rounds, guys.

Rowsdower, what happens to our team now? I do not intend to stop competing. :)

EDIT: Nevermind. Just now realized that this was a double elimination.

I think this was a deathmatch for the first place on the Forums side and Reddit, the winner teams from the forum and reddit will fight to death in the Thunderdome.

I was busy all week and wasn't able to contribute to my team, but I had a great time looking through the submissions. The captions were particularly fun to read. Looking forward to the final challenge.

It was meant to be a double elimination week, so it looks like next challenge will be the one remaining forum team versus your team, winner takes all.

That was a tough vote between team 1 and 3. Really tough. I could make a whole write up but no one wants to read all that so here are my first impressions: Team 1's ground assembly was impressive and well thought out and I loved the commentary, also the VAB landing was a nice touch. Team 3 did a good job of hoisting all that stuff into space for the assembly, tipping it over on Gilly made me chuckle, and add the fact that this all was done with some unconnected ports causing the tower to precariously wobble back and forth, it definitely deserves credit.

I'm not exactly sure what Team 2 did, I don't want to make a snap judgement but there weren't many screenshots and they don't appear to have gone anywhere after assembly.

Team Kerb-O-Nautix also deserves a shoutout for the skillful tour of the solar system to get to Minmus and the Mun goal, no way I would have tried threading the needle with that thing. The almost-not-okay VAB landing was entertaining as well.

In the end I voted Team 3, it just clicked with me somehow and I did also enjoy the video (I know that wasn't required or even suggested but I love a good concise video to give a better perspective). Objectively, I liked 1 and 3 almost equally but I had to pick one so I went with my gut. Good job to you all though. I downloaded the challenge myself and just stared at it for about 15 minutes in horror before giving up. I honestly thought more teams were going to bow out on this one after all the problems I was reading about.

Make it pico size. Smallest radius tanks, crew quarters consisting of command chairs, and legs made from the tiny cubic trusses. It should work.

Does WhackJob want a giganto-craft brake ?

Well, It's not that small though I could do that too/instead (and call it like the micro-lite) :P. It's half the size about, not like mini. I mainly focused on having as few docking ports as possible. Here's a few pics of it now:

Javascript is disabled. View full album

For a tiny one I'd probably use the junior docking ports and the 1.25 meter parts so I could still have docking ports that match the size scale :P. So go tiny instead? It was pretty trivial to build the half sized one. I could make an accurate miniature.

These are awesome.

I would never have expected the rocking crane constructor assemblies to survive the pickup, mind blown. Honestly I don't really want to vote for anyone, because everyone who managed this challenge gets my vote. I do particularly love the brief shot of tower "walking" down the slope of Gilly in that video, though. And for all those multi-point dockings on the ground, I'm impressed with your patience working through the floaty bug.
