[WIP] NohArk's Pick and Pull - Space Tug DEV 0.4

I really, really love it. It looks like there will be helicopter cranes, Ospreys, Hueys and all kinds of awesome helos once this is out. I really have to break out some helo rotors (maybe you could make one or two, too :) ). A door gun for that fuselage would be great, too. Then, all that would be missing for a complete ensemble would be "Ride of the Valkyries" and Charlies (who don't surf). :)

Now I want those pulsejets... Can you release the CFG early?

(Oh, and Pulsejets should be capable of pushing an aircraft up past mach 3- in theory. No-one has tested it {I Think}, but they are very useful engines- in concept.)

Mach3? no kiddin?? wow. I'd hate having to listen to it for that long though. :D

almost ready, just doing last round of checks and packaging for upload

Well the first thing I'm gonna with them is probably gonna be to bomb the KSC with V1 Buzz Bomb replicas (Mount wings and a pulsejet to a Mk82 bomb from BDArmory.

In theory. The thing is, different shapes of pulsejets are supposed to be able to increase the thrust/ change the sound.

Pulse Detonation/ScramJet engine with active pre-compressor until it gets up to speed would be... Very interesting. More thrust initially, then as it gets up to speed the thrust would drop off a bit as the compressors cut out, and as the speed-compression made up the slack the scramjet component would kick in.

whoa. sounds complicated. would make an interesting looking velocity curve with two thrust humps at different velocity bands

right now I got two different ones, but easy to change the configs to adjust behaviour

The new engines look really good. Also, i doubt a pulsejet would work at supersonic speeds, but nothing's ever used one that fast, so who knows. They're very big, but light, so after a certain point, they become nothing but drag.

Also, they throttle very fast, the throttle response time in jets is from the huge compressor needing time to spin up, pulsejets don't have that, they just get more fuel, and burn the more fuel.

Yeah, I've been reading up on them a little bit. there's potential for some interesting propulsion options. Boeing has a research program using pulsejets for VTOL crafts, PETA... Pulse Ejector Thrust Augmenter. No real info I can find other than some primitive d concepts. but the response speed alone makes pulse jets interesting enough for VTOL crafts.

Pulse Detonation Thrust Augment Cells in action. Not much real info to go on, I'm making up the stats. The general consensus seems to be it's better than jet engines. I have it at lower thrust, high throttle response, and comparable/better ISP.

two kinds in the video; a small radial pod type; and structural integrated type in the fuselage section.

of course I forgot to pack ammo for the vulcan.

Look at the throttle slider. It isn't constant in the video. This is why the PETA is so good of a VTOL engine. You wouldn't be able to get that kind of pulsation with a normal jet, throttle couldn't respond that fast. I like the concept, though they should be actually less efficient than turbojets. The idea is to have a quick throttle response, even though fuel consumption would be higher than that of a turbojet.

yeah, probably good to set the ISP back down, if only for game balance purposes. I don't have any numbers on pulse jet's ISP or TWR, I'm guessing around ~1200 and maybe ~3. PDEs theoretically have much much higher ISP... one graph has it around 4000 with hydrocarbon fuels; nothing on thrust or TWR though. I have vacuum mode on the integrated engines at half the thrust (~20kN), ISP on par with nuclear engine, you think that's too cheaty? It'd make for good drop ship action on low gravity bodies.

Remember, PETA is not a PDE, it's a pulsejet. And I don't think they'd work in vacuum, either, they're nothing like rocket engines. I'd say, make a separate part with proper rocket engines for vacuum operations. Could be a single-side aerospike.

Loving this so damn much. The new radial pulsejets are awesome! I love pulsejets and ramjets and stuff like that. And the radial aerospike!!! :o Mein Gott!

Out of interest, do you have any plans for a SCRAMjet? I'm in love with them, but the only ones I've seen/used have been a tad half-cocked. I'd love to build stuff like the X-52 Waverider with a flat radial SCRAMjet, but as yet no such luck. If you're interested you can check out my release thread (click my sig) to see the closest I've been able to get to something like that- using this very parts pack!

Anyway, /ramble. Awesome work is what I'm trying to say. The aesthetic is perfect and the parts are interesting and genuinely fill a niche.

Maybe I'll try a SCRAMjet eventually. I'm not sure if KSP's mechanics will allow something accurate enough for some folks. A few of flat wide lifting body fuselage sections (like the X40s) might be cool, I need to know more about FAR drag models to get correct settings for them though. I'm focusing on getting IVAs into all the crewed parts right now. so new engines/bodies won't happen for a while.
