video editing software

Hi guys, quick question.

What software do you all use to edit your videos prior to uploading to youtube?

I'm looking for some free software if people can recommend some for windows 7 X64 and if anyone knows some for linux that would be excellent.

The software i'm using is videopad by NCH and i hate it with a passion.

The version i have is an older version thats got a free non-comercial licence. The newer versions don't have it... They make you pay if you want to export...

This version when you import a video recorded by fraps has to 'import' the video into the project which is slower than real time... THEN it generates previews, which is slower than real time... then when you add the video onto the timeline it has to generate previews again which is slower than real time... if you change any setting on the clip (lenght, speed etc) then it has to re-generate the preview (again) which is slower than real time...

Video's recorded by FRAPS it doesn't like and crashes at the end of a recording, so i have to chop off the last 0.1 seconds from each clip.

etc... etc... etc...

I swear... it's been programmed by first year students...

So, what do people recommend?

Thanks

I use videopad too... I used to despise it too.

After reading tons of positive reviews about it I actually bought it for 50 bucks.

my 1st video came out OK.

It has a very simple & understandable interface, BUT... it's unstable, unreliable, extremely BUGGY...

I downloaded a bunch of other software, got much worse results! Most of them crashed when just importing the clips! So I decided to stick to what I already own and doesn't cost 500$.

By now I think I learned to cope with it. It seems to run OK when nothing else runs in background, and internet is off.

It may be a good idea to save project after every couple of actions, but even if i didn't, it allows to load last project's latest state, if crashed.

It's text editor sucks. If i need complex texting i export video and continue editing in Movie Maker.

Also I noticed, exporting is faster if you export natural size.

---

After a few months of using videopad i'm not even considering different software, i feel like i can do anything in it.

p.s.

I heard good stuff about Adobe Premiere (i think that's what it's called), but it requires monthly payment.

Easy editor: microsoft movie maker. (Microsoft essentials)

EXTREMELY reliable. I use it for my vidos on youtube channel. Link in signature.

Movie recorder is Nvidia shadowplay. Quite good recommanded.

P.s. Movie editor does not like fraps that well... insyall geforce from nividia to get shadowplay (I guess?)

I use Videopad and hated it for about 2 weeks and then something switched in my brain and now I can't imagine editing video with any other software.

It's got it's quirks. The cache keeps getting corrupted (so I've actually set it to dump the entire cache whenever I exit) and the transitions don't work correctly if you go right to the end of what you've recorded (so I always record a couple seconds after I know I'm done) but they all have workarounds. And after learning the interface I've found it helps me quite a lot to be productive.

But yeah. I wanted to find the programmers and strangle them while I was learning the software.

Before importing my FRAPS-recorded video, I re-encode them with xVid using a program called VirtualDub (or VDub). It's got a command-line interface and I wrote a little batch file to quickly encode everything in a directory. Well not QUICKLY. It takes about a minute per minute (aka per gig) to encode even on my fairly beefy laptop, but come on, we're editing the same resolution video that most multimillion dollar blockbusters still use. Is it THAT hard to wait an hour for it to compress?
