Oculus rift support

Recommended Posts

That would be awesome, but i think it would need a powerful graphics card and would lag too much for any use. I think the devs want to reach scope completion first before adding something that only a few people can use, because as far as i know the oculus rift os not available to everyone. But modders might tacke it someday.

It's actually wouldn't cause very much lag on most gaming pcs. The bottleneck for performance in ksp is mostly CPU power, not GPU power.

Also the oculus dev kit is available for everyone.

This might be cool after cockpit internals get an overhaul, more working windows instead of looking through a tiny square or directly at a bulkhead, more functional instruments, etc. I suppose you could use it in normal (external) view, but it would feel really weird, since turning your head would have to change the position of the camera around the ship to be of much use, not just the orientation, and this is likely to induce rapid motion sickness.

In order to really take advantage of the Rift, command modules should have proper instruments so that you could actually fly the whole mission from IVA. Of course, one could use RasterPropMonitor, but such a feature in the stock game would be nice. What it also needs is first person view for EVA (There's a mod for this as well, but again, stock would be better).

E: And I should probably have read the post above this one lol

I think that with the distances in this game, the only real use for the rift would probably be IVA and EVA, so I'm not sure if it's worth the effort for the devs, but at least someone will probably make a mod for it.

Just to clarify on Max's post, I believe that testing was for non-KSP projects. When at the office back in December '13 for KerbalKon, they had the OR then and were using it for non-KSP projects.

Is it sad that I want this feature above pretty much everything else? I dont care if it's a mod or native, long as it's responsive and has head tracking for IVA. Sure VAB/SPH/etc would be nice, but IVA + RasterProp and EVA First-person is where it's really at.

I agree it should be core/stock, but we may not get a new release for months, and Oculus isn't officially released yet, so as a company I don't think it would be wise to add it NOW. Eventually? Oh heck yes! It's a MUST.

But for now those of us who have (or will have shortly) an Oculus should help test it to prove to devs it not only works, but is awesome!

Now we just need something like LeapMotion or some other hand tracking so we can reach out and operate our crafts.....
