Nope, not exactly like in KSP.

The most important difference:

For each module (be it an instrument, a chassis and so on) you need to research multiple nodes across the several tech trees you have.

What nodes you need to research for a module you can see by clicking the module in the list on the left side

and then following the white lines, which guide you to each node that has to be researched in order for the module to become unlocked.

Also, the deciding factor for many missions (to become available) is, which instruments you have unlocked.

Therefore the primary priority for you should be, to research the first instruments ... the most important one for the beginning is EAS

followed by the Soil Probe and the APXS(as they unlock new missions).

Also, always be aware that, in contrast to KSP, you´re running on a very tight budget and you always have to think about, whether you should use a rover, a lander or a cheaper alternative ...

and also, how to configure the lander or rover in order to fulfill multiple missions instead of a single one

(yes, the landers also can move ... usually you have plenty of fuel left after your first landing, which you can use to fly the lander to an additional mission location ... sometimes even 2, if they aren´t too far away from each other)

The tight budget also means that it is advisable not to put everything into research, but always keep enough money for a replacement vehicle (to the vehicle you´re going tosend out on your next mission). Else it might happen that it is more or less game over for you, if your rover or lander gets broken before you accomplish its mission (well, not literally game over ... but you won´t have any more money to build a vehicle which you need in order to earn money ... so you´re out of action)

"Perfect Research" ...

dunno if what I do is perfect research, but in the beginning I click all level 1 nodes EXCEPT those that are needed for the Zero G Probe.

The research nods for the Zero G Probe are expensive and the probe itself is expensive as well, so you might prefer to research it later.

ALso be aware that, after researching the environmental analysis station (EAS) you are getting a few missions per zone which don´t pay well and should better be done with the simple probe (that you have from the beginning on) instead of the small lander

Antennas are also among the things that have to be researched ... or, more specific (as the first one): The Low Gain antenna.

You normally should find it among the parts in the left list of the research menu
