Will we ever see an official outer Kerbol system?

Recommended Posts

With 0.24 out and 64-bit included, the memory cap issues of the past are on their way into the history books. Does this mean we may eventually see more official planets from Squad? I know there was talk of at least one more gas giant a long long time ago (Eeloo was supposed to be one of the moons) however my theory is that Squad never really went down that path yet because maybe the memory footprint was getting too big to comfortably fit in 32-bit address space (I say this because the extra planets mods take up a ton of extra memory, causing compatibility problems with other mods because there is not enough memory to fit both).

With the memory issue removed due to 64-bit, will Squad eventually add in a set of outer kerbol system planets for us to visit and not crash everyone's install? Personally I would really love to see 2-4 new planets well beyond the orbit of Jool, maybe a couple of eccentrics like comets with highly inclined/elliptical orbits as well. Something about twice as far and 4x as far away, maybe even more. The outer planets of our solar system are a LONG ways out, each one way further than the one before it. Saturn (~10AU) is twice as far from the sun as Jupiter (~5AU), Uranus is twice again as far as Saturn (~20AU) and Neptune is almost twice again Uranus' distance (~30AU).

I just wish there were some further targets to reach for. Using gravity assists, really even reaching targets well beyond Jool's orbit would not be that difficult since if you can get to Jool, you can basically get to kerbol escape velocity using Jool as a boost.

New celestial bodies appears in the what-not-to-suggest list, and as Red Iron Crown so kindly transcribed from the Maxmaps AMA on Reddit:

Improving current planets more important than new planets:

"More planets are a big maybe right now. We have to finish making the current ones as good as Kerbin."

Why thank you. By my post I implied that whether or not we see more planets depends on if the devs see it as a worthwhile endeavor, but we almost certainly won't see them before all the current planets are beefed up. I'm taking that to mean at least biomes on each body, and we may not see more celestial bodies until beyond 1.0.

Am I the only one who doesn't really care for biomes? Besides maybe balancing out career progression and science acquisition, biomes wouldn't add anything physically to each planet. I look forward to seeing what Squad will do to make each planet more unique and interesting besides defining biome locations.

I know that Squad wants to make KSP "feature complete" before adding more planets, but I really think that players are going to start to lose interest unless we get new planets in the next few updates.

New features are nice and all, but what really draws people in are the places they get to explore!

I think it would be cool if the devs started a tradition of adding a new planet or moon every other version.

the system would qickly get too full and convoluted. it only has real room for maybe one more gas giant and a pluto copy.

Another stellar system would be useless because Felipe wants KSP to be realistic and I totally support that. You can't reach other systems using chemical or nuclear rockets, and other stuff simply requires stuff we don't yet have the basic science for. Basic realism is one of the key things that give KSP its essence.

The priority is to brush up existing planets and satellites (even Kerbol/Sun has potential stuff to offer) and then add a second gas giant, preferably a ringed one.

There could be a large brown dwarf kind of object far away (like in Krag's Planet Factory), orbiting Kerbol and having its own puny system. I'd be ok with that.

Well he's gone about it completely wrong so far... Might as well add in additional solar systems and warp drives.

For you. I'm not alone in seeing more planets as fairly pointless without something to distinguish them from one another. With the features we have now, more planets just mean additions to delta-v maps. We might get something that is somehow different, like a thick atmosphere, low gravity moon, but I don't see a lot of room for celestial bodies that are really different given the current feature set.

My thought about planets is this:

They would be cool, but would the gameplay added by adding new planets really be worth it given the effort (and the other things that need adding or polishing).

Adding new planets at this point would just be adding novelty and difficulty, but not necessarily adding new gameplay.

I know that Squad wants to make KSP "feature complete" before adding more planets, but I really think that players are going to start to lose interest unless we get new planets in the next few updates.

Here is the problem with that: you give them two new planets and 6 new moons, which tides people over for another 6 months...and then we're back in the same place again. So where does it end. What number of planets is "enough" for people who only play to visit new planets?

^Maybe Squad should make it so you can easily implement new planets through modding! Right now, the only way to do it is of questionable (and likely no) legality (decompiling.)

As for biomes, they do give a reason to revisit planets with few moons (Jool's moons ARE its biomes, essentially.) Although, I'd like to see more tiers in the tech tree for that. Maybe once more biomes are added, we could get theoretical technology that costs a LOT in the tech tree.

Yeah, i suppose that is something they could work on to be more moddable. That might help. Or perhaps some system that makes any planets outside of Jool procedurally generated so it's different in each save - though that would make planning on how to get out to them rather complex, but it would provide some variety. it would also probably be a pain to implement :D

But yeah, with more biomes, hopefully one gets tech that science can buy. They may not want to make it necessary to land on Tylo to fill out the current tech tree just because IIRC like less than half of players ever actually get outside of Kerbin's immediate vicinity. But yeah, some near future tech (at least) would be nice to spend that science :D

I don't care for biomes. CustomBiomes can add this same thing without wasting 5 updates.

There are these things called PFCE and Kopernicus....
