Turboprop Mayhem: Turbines driving propellors with adjustable pitch

Recommended Posts

My first ever KSP short, showing what you can do nowadays now that the max rotational speed has been removed. Future movies will have better quality.

Watch until the end to see the magic under the hood.

It flies although the whole plane is a bit too heavy. I wanted contra rotating props due to the enormous torque one of these engines produce, and still there's a small thrust differential due to small differences in the placement of the jets.

I've modified the KAX Jumpjet to remove the smoke, decrease heat development and increase thrust.

Due to a limitation in the aerodynamics system, the amount of thrust every blade develops decreases rapidly with increasing speed of the plane. But I have an idea that might help.

The fact that the blades are pulled from the rotatrons is something that might be handled with some editing in the part.cfg. The centrifugal force is huge with those rpm's. Struts don't work.

Obviously this is not a real gas turbine, because the game has no fluid dynamics simulation.

Now that is awesome! I'd love to see an HD vid to study the engines a bit. A while back, I made a helicopter with variable pitch blades, and it was so neat to discover that KSP's aerodynamics were sophisticated enough to make it work.
