Replacing the Banshee Mk3 or as it was otherwise known; "Insanity with missiles attached..." the Wraith is a much more refined offering then its predecessor. It's main advantage is its ability to cruise with a full payload using its jet engine. This makes it capable of long range operations something the Banshee Mk3 was severely lacking. The missiles have also been properly balanced on this craft making for an extremely stable gunnery platform. It's also 100% subassembly compatable allowing easy integration into your existing designs. It comes in five different flavours including...

WIHVID5.jpg

The Model M - Essentially a flying missile battery the M model gives you a total of 10 salvos to play with each one capable of a huge amount of damage. The missiles are effective up to a range of 300m and can even hit stuff at around 2km away if you've got a good eye! While designed primarily for missions on Kerbin the M model can also be used on Laythe.

The Model R - Trading accuracy and stopping power for a larger clip size the R or Repeater model comes loaded with 40 light missiles for a total of 20 salvos. It's effective at a range of around 100m.

Next up we have the G and DS models both of which are built for low G combat and come with an armament that's specially adapted for these environments. The G model shares the same power plant as the M model allowing it to cruise back to KSC after its mission is complete. The DS or Deep Space edition is equipped with an LV-909 for better efficiency and easier launching. It can make a powered landing on Kerbin providing you're not carrying any missiles/too much fuel. They each come with a total of 40 rounds set to fire in salvos of four. Ouch...

...Finally we have the T Model, an unarmed trainer version that swaps weapons for extra fuel. Great for a Sunday drive or to do a bit of shopping at your local Tesco Express.

OWNERS MANUAL:

A joystick with a twist yaw is highly reccomended! Also while the craft is stock you'll need Romfarer's Docking Cam mod for targeting...

An alternative to this is Navhud which is more convinient but less prescise.

...and Sam Hall's IVA Mod for, er, well, just download it.

CONTROLS:

1 - Toggle Jet

2 - Toggle Rockets

3 - Toggle Warning Lights/Nav Lights

5 - Launch Mission (Instant Action Only)

9 - Toggle Ladder

0 - Toggle Reaction Wheel

SPACE - Fire!

ABORT - Jettison All Stores/Dump Drop Tanks (Warning should only be used in emergency's, due to a KSP bug strange things can happen!)

Flying combat VTOL's is perhaps one of the most challenging activities in KSP and one that I'd only recommend to more seasoned players. It's gonna be hard going but keep at it, you'll get there!

Activate SAS on start-up and keep it on at all times.

Unless you're cruising always use the rockets and jets together otherwise you'll be fighting the lag from the engine.

The missiles themselves have some flex in them so you'll want to keep your flying as smooth as possible, especially when fully loaded.

The staging group number corresponds to the amount of ammo you have left.

The front docking port serves as the targeting point and is angled 10* downwards to ensure you get proper trajectories.

Where possible keep the same altitude as your target it'll take a lot of the guess work out of shooting.

You'll have to take into account your speed, your targets speed and the arc of your weapons all of this will come from practice, lots of it!

Don't engage too close, if you're shooting point blank your missiles won't have time to get up to speed and you'll lose a lot of stopping power.

Not unlike real life the missiles can sometimes malfunction, fail to penetrate or even pass straight through the target! Generally they're pretty good though.

With the R, G and DS missiles you just have aim at the center of the target. With the M model missile you have to actually aim bellow the target and keep dropping the nose as the distance increases.

INSTANT ACTION MISSION GUIDE:

The mission pack is divided into two with the M and R model ships. The amount of throttle you set on start-up will dictate the difficulty of the mission, the more experienced you are the higher you should set the throttle.

FFM - Fishfood Frenzy Mission

Difficulty - Easy

Objective - A train full of fish-food is running out of control, you must disable or destroy the waggons before they reach the sea. If not we'll have goldfish as big as whales!

Tips - Upon launch make your way to the front of the train and target the waggons closest to the engine. If you can sever the train at this point the remaining carriages will slow right down. While it's possible to destroy the train it presents a very tough target, I wouldn't recommend attacking it unless your other objectives are complete.

TAM - Tank Attack Mission

Difficulty - Medium

Objective- There are five tanks heading straight to KSC, stop them before they hit any of the buildings!

Tips - Try and get to the front of the convoy and destroy the lead tank, the debris will hopefully catch the one's coming up behind.

IMM - Infiniglider Mayhem Mission

Difficulty - Hard

Objective - A shipment of outlawed infiniglider technology is heading to KSC. Destroy the convoy before it reaches the space port and leave no trace of the infiniglider.

Tips - Infinigliders are dangerous, volatile and unpredictable, you'll want to save at least half your ammo to take it down. Use all the weapons at your disposal. If that fails try ramming the thing!

There are also a couple of scenarios in the folder but these should only be attempted once you're confortable with the instant action missions.

Good luck, if you have any Qs don't be shy!

Awesome mission scenarios are awesome!

Thanks man! There are so many amazing places on Kerbin for these missions, I think I'll do one in the polar wastes next.

Looks like where the banshee left off.

Pretty much. The Banshee was great fun but not very practical at all, the Wraith is a much better "all rounder". :)

I'm honestly more impressed with the low profile ship you used in the first video (that's not to say I'm not impressed with the gunship because I certainly am!) any chance we can see more of the little boat?

It was made as a prop more then anything else but it does work and you can launch Wraiths from it (put the brakes on first). It's actually in the scenario folder (Friendly Fire) if you want to have a play with it. :)

  • 2 months later...

I landed on the helipad on top of the VAB just a tad too hard with this tiny ship, and while the ship wasn't damaged, I heard a bang and suddenly the whole building collapsed lol xD

Anyway, I love how this handles, only problem is the version I downloaded (the trainer version) doesn't seem to have the emergency rockets mapped to control group 2. Tried doing it myself but I can't click the engines to add them coz of all the other stuff in the way.

Heh man,

I haven't really a had a chance to touch the Wraith since .25 came around. If you can give me a week or two I'll try and give it a rebuild for the latest version. Cheers. :)
