KSP is like lego for space. And an action-simulation of some kind.

You build your spaceships witch you have to fly on your missions in an enviroment with orbital dynamics. No elite dangerous or star citizen alike "point directly to an destination an press the pedal to the metal".

The objectives witch are to reach you decide (use your imagination/dreams) as the KASA-CEO in an sandbox game.

Do you want space stations? Or better bases on different planets/moons? Are you the guy who want rockets witch solid fuel boosters or are you the one who prefer an all liquid fuel rocket? Maybe spaceplanes are moore interesting?

Do you want debris all over the Kerbol system or are you avoiding that, maybe even with reusable rocket systems?

It's your choice!

The career mode however, forces you to gain sience points, before you have the better parts availible. Are you able e.g. to send succsessfuly a manned mission with a landing to Duna and back with the restricted amount of parts availible?

With the contracts part - well - you should have already some experiance with KSP. Otherwise you will have no clue how to fulfill them.

If you have never played before, your first objective has got to be getting Jebediah Kerman into space and back again. Not into orbit. Just get him over 70km high (70,000m) and then as he is on the descent, try to control the capsule so that the back end is always pointing in the direction you are travelling (retrograde). As the heat from re-entry dies down, at less than 20,000m deploy your chute. Bring him back alive.

After that, if you are entertained, get him into orbit. Not as simple as it sounds. Ask in this forum for any help in achieving anything you want to achieve then watch us all argue about the best way to do it. Then do it yourself, your way.

Everyone has their own ideas of what the goals should be it's a personal thing. For me it's space planes. At first I couldn't get one off the runway, at least not in a way anyone would call flying. Now the challenges are getting to other worlds, with a lander, landing, exploring, doing science experiments and returning home with everything I took with me, except the fuel. Because now I have to work to a budget. Challenging and fun.

It can be very intimidating to begin with. Because it is still in alpha, it was easy for me to blame my problems on bugs rather than my own ineptitude. So get cracking now! before all the bugs are fixed and it makes you feel more of an idiot than it has the right to. :o)

It's one of the most educational games I've ever encountered. Not only does it teach orbital mechanics, physics, and rocketry, but it also has taught me much about design and good engineering principles generally. But, as a modern "sandbox"-style game, there is no predefined victory condition. Everybody gets to play it the way they like.

(I keep getting distracted by airplane design, and spend days building planes that resemble various classic aviation designs, then tweaking them to fly well in KSP. This entertains me greatly, but it's only one of many possibilitities.)

What is th main object of Kerbal Space Programme.

To HAVE FUN.

Ok, you want more detail?

Answer me this.

What is the main object of Lego?

What is the main object of Meccano?

Oh good grief, you want an ever more explicit statement?

Ok.

KSP is about building stuff, to do stuff and achieve stuff.

*usually* this means building rockets and spaceplanes, to fly into outer space, to explore the KSp solar system.

.

.

It could also mean Building the best inertial catapult, to fling Jebediah Kerbal high enough to somersault through a hoop of fire and land on the VAB.... just as an off-the-cuff example.

Or... Building a 450 ton jetfuel-powered rover to drive over the ocean and climb the southernmost peak on Laythe.

or.... seeing if you can *actually* reach mach2 on the runway without getting airborne. Or disintegrating.

Or...

The main objective of KSP is to garner a greater understanding of the physics and issues regarding travelling through space than most people working for NASA while avoiding having to muck about with all of that "going to college" nonsense, and to allow you to fulfill your childhood dream of becoming an astronaut without having to ride in a centerfuge, train in a space suit underwater to learn that you can't take your helmet off to scratch the back of your head, use a finger cot to deal with floating turds, or any other stressful/strenuous/physically challenging/probably disgusting activities. On the other hand, you don't get to experience the joys of dehydrated ice cream or floating about.

Seriously, it's a sandbox; you do what you want. Like Dwarf Fortress, there are no victory conditions. Somewhat unlike Dwarf Fortress, there are also no defined conditions for losing the whole shebang other than what you put upon yourself.
