What do you think about braces?

I don't wear it but i noticed that many dentist in my country (Poland) prescribe braces for kids i just wonder does braces have any medical value expect draining money from parents and making kids and young adults looking like Frankenstein monsters :D

I never had it and still live, so what the fuss?

But on the other hand, when was the last time I was at the ophthalmologist, he said I have mild myopia, but he told me not to worry, because with such a small disadvantage -0.5 diopter, I can get a driver's license or even pilot licenses:-)

I just have to go with glasses, but they did not buy, because I would look bad in glasses.

The fat man with glasses, people would have a good laugh :D

I'm no medical professional, but braces are pushed as something very important where I live. I never had to have them because my teeth are apparently very straight (another thing I wouldn't really know how to tell) but my sister was told she needed them and had to spend a couple years dealing with painful metal bits in her mouth. Our insurance paid for them so my parents decided (mostly because they weren't the ones who had to wear them) that braces were a good idea. My sister hasn't said a single positive thing about the whole experience, not even a passing "but I guess it's nice to have straight teeth" at the end of a diatribe- I don't really think she noticed much improvement.

But I'll be interested for more people to weigh in here, I guess.

I have braces right now, and man the things you have to go through are insane. This is my second time having them, but I've had them for a few years. I've already gotten two teeth pulled, had to have rubber bands in twice, dozens of check-ups, and a lot of pain. But, to be honest, my teeth do seem to be a lot better than they used to be.

My number one complaint about having braces is BRUSHING YOUR TEETH TAKES ETERNITY.

Didn't enjoy having them at the time, but I'm glad I went through the whole braces thing.

My teeth were crowded anyway, plus I had two extra milk teeth in my upper jaw (wonder if I'm part shark. :) ), so my adult front teeth were seriously crooked and overlapped, once they grew in. Getting the extra teeth removed wasn't at all fun (full on operation, complete with general anesthetic) and getting two other teeth pulled wasn't exactly a bag of chuckles either.

Then the braces after all that. Pretty sure the end result is cleaner, healthier teeth though. Straighter is a nice bonus.

I've never had open heart surgery, and I'm still alive, so it must be useless.

As I had a wisdom tooth removed, the dentist said that my teeth are a little crooked, but only a little and look fine. He said it was a pity that as kid i not wear braces.

But I do not regret, what am I supposed to wear?

To look like a moron?

I Should wear glasses but do not wear them not even boy because i would look silly to wear it, i am to fat and i wold look nice in glasses or braces

You can get nice braces.

Also, nice glasses or maybe contacts.

Also, do you really care that much about all that? I'd rather spend money on my health than on something else.

Did we need to see that?

I don't feel so well...

Maybe I just do not like to be the laughing stock, just that others were making fun of my weight when I was a kid.

I just got them installed last friday, and I've got to tell you, they hurt like hell.

That first night I had to take pain meds to be able to sleep, and the following days I had to drink yogurt, jell-o, and other cold stuff to keep it under control. It's starting to feel normal once again, but in about two weeks I'll have to get them re-adjusted, and I've heard that they hurt pretty bad... again.

At least my teeth won't **** themselves up like they did with my dad's family. My ancestors were from Germany/Netherlands, so their teeth tend to get squeeze each other.

It's going to hurt even more when you have to get them tightened, but I never had to take pain meds when I had braces.

I've never had open heart surgery, and I'm still alive, so it must be useless.

Irrelevant. Open heart surgery is on the heart, arguably the most vital organ along with the brain. Teeth are useless in comparison. You can grind food, but you can't replace your brain witha compueter.

Has anyone here never heard of these? They're called "Invisalign."

They have them in my area, at least. They're quite expensive but they're almost unnoticeable to the observer. You could probably find out if they have them in Poland.

I'm 50% Polish ethnically, by the way (but my nationality is American) :) I've never had braces before because they told me to wear a twin-block for a year or two before I got braces, but that was uncomfortable so I never wore it. My teeth aren't too bad but I have an overbite. :(

Luckily, I did not have to wear braces, recently my dentist when I remove a wisdom tooth that said have a little crooked teeth, but I do not have to worry about, but a little pity that as a child I had braces.

Perhaps this loser talking crap parents of kids to draw from them the money, and torture kids with this piece of garbage , and make it look like retarded.

I should wear glasses -0.5 Dioptre but i wold look bad in glasses, so i don't wear it :)

I had braces, and I can tell you that they were very worth it for me.

My overbite is gone and my teeth are totally straight. Sure, it costs a bit and it hurts a lot at first but it definitely is not a scam, especially for people that have especially crooked teeth, bad overbite or other conditions that if left untreated could cause Heath problems down the road.

I'll clue you in on something. Your teeth play a bigger role in your hearts health than ony other group of cells. Your teeth sit near a ton of facial vessels and when your teeth aren't in pristine health, you are subjecting your heart to a direct shot of bacteria. Ergo, slowly killing you by degrading heart valves.
