Is it possible to NOT update to .25?

Hey all, I was trying to post this in the .25 forum but it did not seem to work: Basically I do NOT want to update to .25. I wish to keep the current version 24.2, as I have gotten further in science mode then I ever have before (made my first mun base! will probably post pics soon), and do not want to restart (I am using quite a few mods and am guessing .25 will break some of them. It took me a good couple of hours to get them all working together and I would rather not have to redo that) Not wishing to restart, is there a way to force my computer to not update KSP or its mods? I am using it on Steam, which I know is very update happy and I am not sure if there is a way to play a game without updating if one is available? (never tried it before, and I don't want to risk my save) and have modulemanager installed to check for mod updates, but I was thinking of removing it so it does not try to update some mods to .25 (when I do upgrade it will be all or nothing). Any suggestions on how to keep playing 24.2 once .25 is out? Should I copy my gamedata folder and paste it over the update? (I don't think that will work, as it would probably try to update again.) :(

Any help would be really appreciated, as I was really looking forward to developing my mun base (so much science...)

One method is to copy your entire KSP folder somewhere else. That way steam does not have access to it at all. I don't use steam myself, but I'm sure there's a more elegant way to prevent an update. (Hopefully some steam user will be along soon.)

Welcome to the forums! :D

Steam itself seems to have removed the option to not update. You can tell it not to update untill you launch the game but theres no option to Never update. I'd swear there used to be that option but no longer apparently. That said you dont have to run through steam. Just go to the folder that steam installs its games and copy the KSP folder out to somewhere else. You can then launch the game from the KSP.EXE in that folder. The only thing you loose is steam cant track your hours played.

Personaly I've been doing this for a while. I have a folder on my drive for KSP. Each time a new version comes out I make a new folder in there, tag it with the version number and copy the updated folder over. I also tend to keep 1 clean version and 1 modded version in there as a just in case.

This is exactly what I do too, and what I always recommend to others.

I can confirm this method, I used to do that, and it works fine. Highly recommend it.

(nowadays I use a direct-from-Squad version as I prefer it's .zip distribution over Steam)

The best way is to just make a copy of your folder KSP and use the launcher in the folder vice launching from steam. I currently have my games back to .23 on my desktop and older ones on a backup drive. Make sure you do before the update is released.

The previous stable versions are available at the Store, or through opting in through the Beta feature on Steam. As discussed here.

Of course you will still want to backup your saves beforehand, and be careful not to launch into the game without checking to see if it has updated. You won't want to corrupt your saves by accidentally launching into .25. Reverting to Previous on the Beta should keep you in business with .24.2 for a while, until 0.26 anyways.

As a note, it's also been recommended that you recover any space plane type craft that you have in flight before upgrading to 0.25. The space plane parts have undergone significant overhaul and you will likely find that most designs will need to be adjusted.

Here is a cunning plan to avoid Steam updating. Set update to 'only update this game when I launch it', then don't use steam to launch it, open it from a shortcut straight to the exe, or add the to Steam library as a non-Steam game if you still want the Steam overlay.

As far as Steam will be concerned, you're not launching the game, so it won't update it.

Well, in theory anyway.

That some from .20 still work for you is not a general indication that all work after every update. ie. The last update.

Well no. I'm just saying that it wont likely happen. From .23 to .23.5 to .24.2 I kept the same mods. I've only updated them "just because", and I had some time to do it. Basically what I'm saying is there's no need to panic and I'm sure the mods and game will work fine until the mods get updated, so go ahead to .25....

As those before me, I recommend that you keep an archive of all versions as well as any mods that you have used during the save. I have a folder dedicated to archived "master" versions as well as snapshots of my previous versions in their last-played formats. Try it, you will archive all the things!

Yup, final stable build of each version gets archived for posterity's sake, then I set about seeing how to port the save, adding mods before as they get ready. Usually in a week everything that was broken is updated, but there is a reason I tend to concentrate my modded parts on individual ships: I've had to kill more than a couple of kethane miners, for example. The rescue missons are interesting, and I've had the same stable-ish save since career was implemented.

Rune. Backups saved my bacon more times than I can count, that's for sure.

I'm debating whether I want to try to salvage my save or start over. I'd like to continue my work on Duna but at the same time if I did start over I could just do it again but better... Ahh I don't know. Maybe I'll do both.

I am quoting the following because it's basically what I did with 0.23 and 0.24 and it worked perfectly.

The previous stable versions are available at the Store, or through opting in through the Beta feature on Steam. As discussed here.

Right now, set Steam to "Only update when I launch" under "updates", then when 0.25 is available set it to "previous stable release" under "betas".

I just made an archive of 24.2 mods that I have even the slightest of interest in. 116 mods in total. If this whole thing implodes and burns to the the ground like the VAB, I am set to go!
