Nothing Good on Netflix anymore...

Why is there nothing good on Netflix anymore?

Since they increased new purchasers' price for streaming, they have dramatically reduced the quality and availability.

Really...What should I watch?

I dunno, what do you like? I agree with you about Netflix going downhill, but I still find an occasional gem. Sadly the couple that popped right into my head are no longer available by streaming. But let's check my history...

Have you seen the live-action version of The Tick?

"Get Over It", a teen comedy that's a guilty pleasure of mine.

"Europa Report", if you haven't seen it over and over already. Same for "Gravity".

"Robot and Frank" is a cute indie pic about a retired thief who's given a helper robot and teaches it to steal.

"An Awkward Sexual Adventure". Reviewers kept saying there was much more to this movie than you'd think. They were right.

"Iron Sky" is still available. A campy, Nazis-on-the-moon farce with decent writing and surprisingly good sets.

Hope you find something!

I spent about 18 months watching all of Star Trek, from the first episode of TOS through the last episode of Enterprise, and all the movies. For fun, I watched them just about in order of release (so I bounced between Next Gen and DS9 when appropriate). I also watched all the movies in roughly the order they came out relative to the series.

I also recently watched Continuum and Sherlock. Though Continuum requires a bit of fortitude for the first 6-8 episodes (like so many sci-fi tv shows do), by season 3 it's FANTASTIC. Sherlock is also quite good. I'm looking forward to watching Once Upon a Time, too. And then there's Buffy and Angel, which I only made it halfway through and stopped a long time ago.

Then there's the 100+ movies and other TV shows in my watch list, that I seem to be adding to quicker than I watch.

Its really bad. I can only play games multitasking now unless I'm enthralled completely...So I run netflix on the other monitor.

Lol Yeah I love The Tick. Also been on a Star Trek kick...Maybe I should try the newer ones. But they are so soap-opera-y. Definitely need to work on Fawlty Towers again, just too bad Mr. Bean is out, but I guess its hard to get sick of Black Adder.

Ah, you enjoy British shows! How about Hyperdrive or Primeval? I didn't fall in love with either, but did enjoy the several episodes I watched. They're still in my queue and some night I'll get back to them.

A little off-topic but, have you seen the 2007 St. Trinian's? Netflix only has it on DVD, but if you can get torrents it's easy to find. We had the DVD last week and loved every minute. :) I do recommend first reading the Wikipedia page and the IMDB trivia page, though. Lots of jokes are British pop-culture references and, as with anime, it helps outsiders to read a little background info first. I just thought I was getting a standard prep-school farce, but it turns out St. Trinian's is a pretty big deal in British culture. It dates back to a 1940s comic, has spawned multiple books and movies, and is kinda the British equivalent of our Addams Family. Plus the school song they play over the closing credits is so good it's still running through my head a week later.

Good hunting!

edit: YouTube currently has a full copy of "Special Bulletin" from 1983 available. It's a made-for-TV nuclear terrorism movie that only aired once. Even with text "this is fiction, dummies!" disclaimers every half hour, thousands of people thought it was real and freaked out.

YouTube is incredible. There are so many incredible people to watch and the content can be astoundingly high. Plus, there's always the fact that most YouTubers release content on a daily basis. Some of my favorites are NerdCubed, HOCgaming, Vsauce, WheezyWaiter, AntVenom, Caddicarus, Danny2462, VanossGaming and Tomska.

I'll give them a shot. I do like a lot of the British shows but i can appreciate a ton.

St. Trinian's? Nah, never heard of it. Curious though I will have to take a look. But way good idea on the wiki page. I'm going to take a look.

I suggest you try out anime. HOLD ON! Now before you start saying something like "it is for kids", "the Japanese are weird" and any other silly things, give it a try. To warm up, you can try some of Hayao Miyazaki's works(anime movies).

After that, you can go for some series. I won't make you watch Bleach, Naruto, One piece, or Attack on titan, you can if you want later on.

Try these ones out first, they were hand-picked by me and a lot of other reviewers:

Here it goes...

First up, Planetes:

Next up, Mirai Nikki:(no embed sry, the intro contains gore)

Code Geass:

Space Brothers(there is also a movie):

EDIT: If you want to watch anime online legally, you can do so on www.funimation.com

Telly is the new film - expand your search into TV shows and you've still got a few thousand hours to catch up on. Not sure how much difference there is between Netflix's UK & US offerings, but goodies on this side of the pond:

House of Cards (the US one *and* the original 1990 UK one)

Orange is the New Black

*All* the Swedish/Danish crime dramas (subtitles are fine, they're better than the remade/dubbed versions, + you learn some Scandewegian!)

So - The Killing, The Bridge, Borgen

Nurse Jackie

Homeland

Breaking Bad (guessing everyone's seen this now, but just in case)

The Thick of It (this is exactly how government runs, plus you learn the very best swears from Doctor Who)

Black Mirror

edit: oh, and if you can find it - In The Loop - film spinoff of The Thick of It - more fantastic swearing :)

should give a flavour. Edited by MiniMatt
