Failed projects that never took off?

Do you have any projects that never took off?

I have one that was a Jool mission with 2 planes for Laythe, design proved to be too heavy and i didn't managed to reduce weight, had to build another thing.

What about you?

So far, a non wobbly two transport system for my luxury station line.

The fuel pods are very heavy.

I have made it to the point of one transport of materials that doesn't wobble. The second I am still working on. I may have to build a fuel pod delivery ship instead of limiting the transport of materials to two ships.

In .24.something i wanted to do a trip around the solar system which never worked out due to the main core of the ship being over 400 parts. My new plan is to build a new engine core and use that to go places.

Usually 1 in 5 designs actually get used in a serious attempt. 1 in 5 of those attempts succeed in a sort of successful way.

50-60% of my enjoyment from this game is just building the ships. Sometimes i can have 3 or 4 game sessions without ever leaving kerbin, maybe achieve orbit to see if it works and then move on to another design that will never be used.

Took a Fine Print contract to put an E-class asteroid on a kerbolar escape trajectory, with 50 years to do it. It seems they didn't want these things hanging around. After docking a tug with 10km/s dV to a 3600 ton 'roid and seeing the dV drop to 200, I knew I had a challenge. After launching a few more tugs, .25 was approaching so I focused more on completing other missions. Of course, with family and overtime season at work, I never really finished most of my outstanding contracts before .25 came out and I started a new install. This time I may try Karbonite.

Oh, and that first tug had 8 nukes and was too close to get any traction going. After clawing onto another truss piece there was too much stretch in the truss work and it would bounce around, or snap back when I killed the thrust, like below. Even with no thrust the rig would shake itself to pieces.

I had this wonderful truck I built... was stable, fast, held a lot of cargo, could transport tons of kerbals, sturdy, cool looking (kind of M35 looking ). It was also big and heavy.... which sadly limited its use to on Kerbin only, as I could not produce a reasonable transport to drop it anywhere else. I did finally manage to build a drop ship for it, to drop it on the Mun, but thats all it did, no crew, science, etc..... and i instead moved on to a much smaller vehicle that could be dropped off along with the crew and the lander.

Though... I have not fully given up on the idea, (it is so dang awesome looking) I redesigned it, cut back the size and weight, and with the NASA parts I may finally be able to build the ship I need.

Ive spent a weekend on designing self sustaining mothership to finaly get me interplanetary. Flawless design. Looked so good on paper that i didnt think twice about putting a fixed engine compartment on it. Ive assembled it, fueled it, supplied it. Launch window happened, and ive noticed it doesnt go anywhere, actually, it barely turns... So i dumped most of the supplies, and had just enough dV to send it to the Mun. At least i have perfectly viable space station...

I have too many failed projects to mention, especially from when I just started playing. Nowadays, I can build pretty much anything I like (within reason) without blowing things up, but I still make mistakes every now and then (or take unnecessary high risques)... I'd say 1 out of 15 new rocket designs is a complete disaster  But I can always trace my errors and make something work. It has been a loooooooong time since I completely discarded a model.

This monster I built back in .21

I couldn't make a compact ramp...in fact I couldn't even make a ramp that worked

Javascript is disabled. View full album

Edit: This is much plane building experience ago so I might be able to do something similar again a little bit better...with a different concept for a smaller rover that doesn't need the storage...hmmmm..........

A jool mothership. It was assembled in LKO, but as I recall a new version came out after I completed it and I started a new save. I'm fairly certain it never left LKO. Shame, too, that thing was big and probably could of landed on at least 2 of the moons with it's external lander.

Oh I've got lots of them.

Here's my first interplanetary mothership constructed in .22

fGD204P.png

It never went past the moon due to mega wobbliness.

The only 2 vessels of my abandoned laythe base.

This Jool mission was abandoned around the orbit of pol due to bugs and laziness.

Deorbiting my incomplete laythe station for .22 (the more successful of my projects)

My first Vall landing but I was too lazy to finish the mission and return home. (All I had to do was rendezvous with some fuel in orbit and go home)

The KES Orion an armed exploration cruiser with the intent of going to laythe with 5 kerbals once I started the burn I learned it would take 50 minutes to complete scrapped it by reversing course and dropped it into the kerblantic ocean all crew survived thanks to the Landers parachutes holding a 40 ton cruiser and 15 ton lander for well over a kilometre.

Lesson learned 2 kerbals can't push a 55 ton ship very well.

Also this was the first ship of mine to be aesthetically pleasing, a new design is on paper and only a prototype was built and launched but quite impressively it was nearly an ssto.
