It lives!

So, I was on a thread earlier that was locked shortly after because (and I was unaware of this) it was "necro'd".

My question is, if a thread that is "necro'd" is almost immediately locked, then why not lock a thread after a certain time period (after they've been abandoned for so long) to save the trouble? <-- Sounds a little ridiculous, right?

OR, save your padlock and let us enjoy a thread that has clearly had new life breathed into it (if only a little). It's not as if the thread was causing problems or anything. Heck, if it had not been necro'd then I would have never enjoyed it.

The thread in question:

It's not as if this forum is teeming with constant activity as it is. >.>

If you necro a thread with ":)" or "that's great" or "I don't like it personally", then you're stupid.

If you necro a thread with relevant information about it and the mods start bi*ching "because you necroed it and omg necroing is bad m'kay", then they're stupid.

Basic forum etiquette.

There is no automation for the forum, any locking or checking has to be done by the mods, who are all voluntary... can you imagine how much time it would take them to just review all the old threads before locking them? and then, would you be happy to give up all that time for free?

It's more conventional to re-make the thread and include a link to the old one, but only if you have new information, as lajos said...

none of this meant offensively, just letting you know that what goes on behind the scenes is a bit more complicated than people realise... Just trying to update the forum saw the guy in charge scratching his head, checking a few things, then reverting due to loss of functionality... :)

Most outdated threads die natural deaths and there's no need to close them, because no one ever posts in them again. Some threads are still relevant, so reviving them doesn't harm anything. But in a periodically updated game like this in which new versions can render the contents of old threads misleading, it's better to close the thread so that players are not being confused by and acting upon old information. In other words, it's a judgement call and not something automation can take care of for us. But don't feel bad about it if it happens to you, because it's not intended to be a punishment. It's just a matter of keeping the forum moving along effectively. (So we'd rather you folks didn't call each other stupid about it [glares]. )

Also, since this thread is about the forum itself, it has been moved to Kerbal Network, also not as a punishment. :)

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
