Community Mun Base 2.0

Recommended Posts

So , my efforts to add to the Mun base were...less succesfull than planned

After contemplating building a larger and more ambitious 'lunar outpost' , I decided to stick with what I knew and plumped for the 'Super Laika' variant of my 'Laika' class orbiter. This launcher-capsule was originally designed for simple orbital flights but the addition of some landing legs and a switch from the Kosmos RCS modules to stock (to reduce the number of mods used) extends its range into Cis-munar space. I has some strange problems with the persistance file refusing to load the last few missions , so I apologise in advance for glitches when I pass on the batton.

Oh , and for those of you wondering about the name of the capsule I include a completely optional history lesson.

Shortly after the launch of Sputnik in 1957 Premier Khrushchev demanded that the space program produce a 'Space Spectacular' to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the October revolution and one-up the Americans who were preparing to launch their own satellites. Deciding that the triumph of an animal in space would be sufficient , they cobbled together the Sputnik 2 spacecraft in a matter of weeks. As for its passenger , they chose a young mongrel stray called Laika that had been found wandering the streets of Moscow. On Nov 3rd 1957 she was lifted into orbit on an R-7 Launcher , becoming the first living creature to be launched into an orbit around the Earth. Though the mission made headlines at the time (Laika was lauded as 'Mutnik' in the American press) , the story was rapidly eclipsed by the race to put a man into space and the subsequent dash for the moon. Laika herself was destined to die in space , for the Russian engineers had neither the time nor the expertise to design a re-entry module. Within hours of launch the poorly designed systems began to fail and Laika died of heatstroke before the day was out. Despite this the mission must be considered highly successful , for it proved that creatures not unlike humans could Breath , sleep eat and talk (bark) in zero gravity. In recognition of this triumph , I named my humble lander after the dog.

Mission Log

1. On the pad. As you can see , the Laika class is a small ship , and usually does not launch with a fairing. One was added for this mission for the sake of the delicate landing legs. The first stage is all liquid , but would normally include the addition of four small solid 'payload assist' rockets from Jordancox\'s pack. I ommited them believing that the lander could make the one way trip.

2. Shortly after 2nd stage separation. Here you can see the lander itself. The legs and large RCS units rather mess up the lines of this beautiful pack , and usually I fly with the smaller Kosmos RCS. This is where leaving out the Payload assist rockets came back to bite me , forcing me to use the capsules main engine to boost orbital speed and make the Trans-munar burn. Much valuable fuel was wasted

3. Munar Disasters! Firstly , I mistimed my TMB. I ended up in front of the mun and had to make an emergency course correction. Then , after correctly lining myself up and burning off velocity to come down manually on the base-site , it became apparent that I would run out of gas. I was forced to take an agonising decision and commit myself to landing on the Capsule rockets alone. That was pretty hair raising. I finally managed to get her down only a few dozen metres from the beacon...and was then mildly suprised to see the rover go rolling past the window! for some reason it decided to start moving when it loaded in range. I have no idea why. This is the view I got after I shifted it back into position manually

In conclusion , ive had better missions. I include the Persistance file , I only hope my next crew take a spare jerry can :)

I went to map moonbase mike but the save file is not in the OP. :(

Edit: realised I don\'t have all the mods so the persistence file won\'t help me. The ships simply won\'t load so I won\'t see where the base is. Someone will need to post a screenshot of the Mun from orbit so I\'ll know where the base is. Thx.

I\'m just glad I\'m getting my turn before even more mods get added on... C7 alone is three packs to get it working, so that\'s 6 packs total.

I\'m finalizing my design now, will download the persistence file after test flights.

I hope I have all the mods right - I wouldn\'t want to lose someone\'s ship (Maybe that\'s what happened with sirscott\'s run?) Out of C7 just the v 2.15, C7 Third Experimental release, and Gear Beta are needed, right?

----

Yep, they loaded up. The plane started rolling when I loaded one of them to confirm, though - I\'ll make a fresh download, do my flight and try to move everything back after.

Was gonna post this last night but the server switch delayed me big time.

Well it took me 4 hours and quick few quick save.

The landing was a major pain in the ass, in fact, I did it three times. My first landing put me about 1 Km so I boosted my self to here:

I was gonna stick with that but I decided to move once again. I was aiming to get closer but All I has 2-3 seconds of RCS left so I was limited to this far:

Anyway, the persistence file:

EDIT: What\'s up with the attachment options? I can\'t upload anything.

Good news, sirscott - I brought plenty of fuel to share!

The Fawlty Towers had no problems landing, first stage ditched into the ocean and the second blew up on impact off to the east of the base. Since I hadn\'t played with mechjeb much since they added the ascent and descent modes, I let it put me into a 100km orbit on launch. It worked well enough, but I probably would have flown it slightly differently. From that point on mechjeb was only used to provide orbit and surface information.

The plane and the cart are both really trying to roll away downhill, they started moving as soon as my lander got within 200 meters. I guess those plugins could use a lock where they won\'t roll unless they\'re the currently piloted craft. I had to land fast to limit the damage, instead of my usual 'hover and carefully choose an exact spot' method.

RTRLe.png

This was after I moved the wayward vehicles back into the base area. Click here for other screenshots of my launch and landing.

Unfortunately, when I switched craft and tried to zoom out further and get a better shot, everything started rolling again - in this second shot they\'re both moving away from the base at a good speed. I stopped messing with things at that point, hopefully trbinsc or someone can move them back into place better than I can:

Thanks GOOMH, hope it was fun.

I found the plateau to be very deceiving, under landing. I regularly have to abort, an try again.

Presently updating my original Post now.

GOOMH Please double check your Persistance file. I loaded it, an there is only 3 craft saved!!!

Caesar15, its your go now: - But please wait until this Persistance file is updated.

Four at the stock base so far, trbinsc, why\'s my ship moderately damaged? it\'s in one piece in the pics and it\'s designed to return on the capsules engine, leaving the back end behind.

It\'s on its side because landing gear would spoil the aesthetics, and it can right itself for launching using just the SAS, or just pop off the capsule and launch that alone.

I am not doing, this, I hate you all...

APRIL FOOLS

I am assuming the persistence file Is updated now, how many craft is there supplied to be?

I am sorry.

Its not meant to be an april fools joke! :D ;P

There is meant to be 4 (Including GOOHMs craft) saved, but it would seem GOOHM either pressed End Flight (Deleting his craft) or the Still Accelerating Bug, deleted his craft...

Either way, it will be some time until he, replys!

So Caeser15, please take the latest Persistance file, from GOOHM Post, an launch your craft (Only 3 craft saved, 76KB in size).

We will try mearging files, after your go!

With Plugs-ins been disabled until Monday (Server Migration), I am having a hard time updating my original Post properly.

Regards Seanoog.

Whoops sorry That\'s the original file, you see after I landed I made like 50 copies just in case KSP wanted to get buggy and delete the crafts but here\'s the real one.

I\'m definitely up for doing it again but for now don\'t put me on the list.

A very simple design lander! But its heavier than mine.

-However I have been prototyping a new lander, which carries my basic lander, as a backup. :D Double redundency! Deffinitly NOT Kerbal!

Now too make it BIGGER.

Caesar15, can you please use this new Persistance file, an start launching your craft, if you haven\'t already.

Okay, my turn on the Mod base, thanks for the heads up trbinsc, I had just gotten through checkpoint 2, loading Mod install now......

Edit:

Guys, do I need just the C7 experimental and gear packs or do I need the old one as well?

Edit 2 :

I have got it working and am good to go.

Edit 3 :

My god, it\'s full of parts ::)

I may or may not be able to do my landing on the stock base. I have been practicing, but due to my graphics card being super old, all the land textures are just pitch black, and I have to land on the moon by relying on the altimeter. Thankfully, the moon rocks show up when I get low enough so I can have some sort of depth perception XD

GOD, your near the end of the list, an with Smart Shader 2 support within a couple of days, you should be good to go!

I\'ll keep you on the list, an your free to Pass, your go if you want..

Ha ha, with Edit 3!

All the stock craft, seem to be in one piece! For the time been!

But I cant seem to be able to post a picture to prove that point! ???

Uploads to the site are currently down, so put the pic on something like imgur.com and post the url here using the tag above the Smiley emoticon.

My Mune Buggy is currently on route to the Mod base, I tried to get the Ausplane on the cart but gave up, I\'ll have to figure out some way to get it there, and on wheels.

Don\'t worry about another cart rolling away, I have that all worked out ;)

Edit:

Dur of course you know how to put up pics, I\'ve been looking at them haven\'t I? I\'ll forget my own engines next ???

I\'m going to be travelling for the next two weeks. I\'ll still try to do a stock landing when my turn comes up, but it\'ll depend on how much internet access and time to play I have when I\'m on the road.

Don\'t give me the full 48 hours, if you haven\'t heard from me within 24 just move me to the bottom of the list.

Mission complete, the Mune Buggy is parked at the Mod base next to the Fawlty Towers.

I have moved the Munar Recon 3 in between the two ships, hopefully it will stay put.

I had hoped to use the Little White Pill as a wheel chock for the Munar Defense Module MK1, but I was unable to move it on my first attempt, on my second attempt the Munar Defense Module MK1 leaped into the air when it was selected and crashed despite my attempts to bring it down safely with RCS, I reloaded and have left the craft alone.

The Mune Buggy is undamaged and has enough fuel remaining to get into orbit, land, and launch a second time for a return to Kerbin, it needs a tiny amount of thrust to get it back on its wheels and to park it again, drive backwards and hit the brakes.

Edit: I experienced extreme lag when I approached, it got a bit better after going to the space center and back, but the next time I fly a ship here I\'ll be temporarily editing out the larger vessels, there are several parts in the file displaying NAN, maybe they can be all changed to 1 without causing damage.

Actually Senoog put me on the stock list again since there\'s 16 people in front of me it\'ll give plenty of time to prep, relax, and get sorted before then.

I have been working on my lander for this, my first 3 stages where running fine.. but as I added my 4th, it just would not fly straight, no amount of extra SAS or wings or struts or struts on struts would fix it..

Finally I noticed that I had left my ASAS module off! opps!!
