rtxoff
I don't think so, he probably did it for the money and the fame and he got both of them already.
Nibb31
Seeing that Eustace made practically zero publicity around this jump, as compared to Baumgartner's jump, I wouldn't accuse him of doing it for fame. He is already pretty famous as VP of Google, so he doesn't really have anything to prove on that front.
Streetwind
That's a lot of money going to a company involved in high-altitude and space development. I'm all for that. Thanks, Mr. Eustace!

He is already pretty famous as VP of Google, so he doesn't really have anything to prove on that front.Baumgartner was sponsored so they wanted more publicity, Eustace paid it himself so it was no need to make it know until after he broke the record. Main difference is that Baumgartner sat in a pod during accent and could probably landing in it if anything went wrong. Eustace had the balloon connected to the parachute harness. Yes It was some other gear on the accent part too, probably air and power used during accent.

lajoswinkler
I don't like Baumgartner. He has proven to be a cocky douchebag when he was, as a famous person on the peak of his popularity, taking a dump on the effort of going to Mars. He's not really into space exploration, and is an adrenalin addict. The media romanticized him.
Holo
Can you not read? This is decadence at its worst.Yes. I can.Anyway, this person is so awful. Everyone knows that all resources spent on doing this would have magically turned into food and shelter for poor people if he hadn't did it. You're the second person to add your own spin on this. What's wrong with this picture? This is precisely why we need stricter rules for the science sub-forum.@everyone.Stop reacting. CaptainKipard
That your statement applies to almost everything most people do, including everything on this forum, and is therefore both pointless and worthless.Ok so your mistake is to to make that inexcusable leap in logic. Kryten
He just pumped a lot of money into cutting-edge ECLSS research; you're complaining about it. One of these things is useful.

zxczxczbfg
Sticking to topic.IMO, no one should really be complaining about the VP of Google breaking a skydiving record. It's his money, he spends it how he wants.

B787_300
Guys, CALM DOWNand he spent his own money and his suit and chute were MUCH more advanced than Baumgartner's. While The Google Exec does not NEED the fame, he did not publicize because he was spending his OWN money. Also the talk about decadence should STOP NOW. this is not the right place to discuss that topic. This is the Science Lab where science and technology should be discussed not the relative decadence of things. If the decadence talk continues the thread will be locked.
