Do we really need videos for updates?

My 2 cents:

Yes, I do watch update videos, and have had rewatched some of them lately.

But, I do not think that we do NEED this. It is good to have such option, but I will be able to go without it.

P.S. Just understood that I have not seen the video for .25 update...

Pretty much illustrates the thought here...

I do enjoy them, but I can't help thinking that if they are going to spend time making, and rigging up models, finishing something that would add more to the game would be a better use of time....

I'm not a fan of them, at most I watch them once. More in-game assets would be more beneficial to me. I would never buy a game based on a pre-rendered trailer, I always look for in-game footage and reviews (or a demo) before purchase.

That said, I'm not everyone. Maybe they have feedback that shows the cinematics are an effective sales tool.

They build the community that get it more sales than their own PR (of which they do very little) - I think that is why they do it. More community --> more sales --> more money --> more KSP

This community (along with the Reddit and Steam sister communities) are their PR and Squad is very, very good at what they do. Now-a-days it's all about social media and you're the marketing vehicle in this advertising model. The medium is the message, if it's free you're the product, and all those stupid phrases.

So in that sense: donky video = social/community interest = projected product value = revenue

But as others said, the videos aren't for you, you've already bought the game. They're to spark interest in the would-buy, or to act as a spark for did-buys to share and re-share their interest in the game for other would-buys.

I enjoy the cinematics and do expect them with every release. Moar please.

Indeed. I quite like them and find them a good worth of time.

I find the videos quite disposable: why would you watch a 0.22 video now?

ARE YOU JOKING?!?! The 0.22 release vid I STILL WATCH. I love it! See it with your eyes again! I love the super intense release vids. I suggest doing serious toned videos as oppose to comedy but hey maybe that's just me.

All cinematics are done by Nassault, who is a community member not a paid dev.

The rest seem to have a semi-dedicated team for WHEN THE REST OF THE ART IS FINISHED !

Really, they are a nice thing to have, instead of in the dev notes some blank spaces of "we discussed some assets of the update after the one we are doing now, can't actually start though until the rest is finished"....

No, Nassault does not make all of the official cinematics. Nassault makes great cinematics to be sure, but until Squad co-opted his video for 0.25, all the official cinematics for KSP were done in-house.
