What do you do when you lose inspiration?

So recently I have lost any inspiration to build/do anything new in KSP. What do you all do to find inspiration?

I take breaks.

Once what brought me back was watching YouTube videos of NASA's mining robot competitions.

Whenever LazTek does a new major release of his SpaceX kit, I get sucked in for awhile playing with it. Such beautiful machines!

Another time, I added DR and FAR so I had to redesign all my standard boosters. One of my regular KSP boredom problems comes from my boosters. Each time I start a new game, I spend hours and dozens of test flights designing a family of near-perfect boosters, for payloads ranging from 10t to perhaps 400t, and so stable they practically fall into circular orbits by themselves. That's fun for me, but afterwards of course launches are no challenge at all. I end up letting MechJeb fly the launches while I read or watch TV, because they're dull. So most of my projects after that point involve large bases and orbital stations that have to be assembled on-site.

Watch a sci-fi movie, maybe. Research real-life concepts, plausible creations, or crazy ideas. Things like that really get me going. For only a few seconds of some guy's thrown-together slideshow of images from Defying Gravity's pilot episode, a spaceship orbiting Mars was shown. I haven't been able to find it anywhere else (barring the actual show), but I was so inspired by that shot that I had to make it in KSP, which I did. It's currently flying a test mission around the Mun and Minmus, and the design will soon be sent all around the Kerbolar system.

Whats wrong about playing another game until inspiration and ideas return by itself?

When i force myself to continue, playing turns to work and fun to frustration. Games are meant to be played, not beaten or being worked through.

Currently i am playing Alien Isolation and i am really looking forward to Elite Dangerous. KSP fills all the time in between.

This sounds strange but I would perform a mundane (no pun intended), borderline tedious mission, over and over again. For example, landing on the Mün with the same craft at least 3 times. After I become really bored I make slight changes to the ship, and when I got somthing different, I would start editing it in order to perfect the design. Thus inspiration for new craft.

Or see how many fragments I can make explode from one scatter bomb (current record 528 fragments)

I play CS:S, I just started getting into "Gnomoria", or I play an assortment of other games. With time, the waning passion for spaceflight returns stronger, usually close to a new update incidentally.

EDIT(sorry off topic) : Frank, do you like alien:isolation? I just got the handheld radar pinger thing and have liked the game so far. The atmosphere is perfect.

Try out some new mods.

I still have RemoteTech at the very least to make a playthrough with.

Really, I don't get buildingblanks if I have a goal in mind. I'm very utilitarian in that regard.

I have a challenge I'm cooking up. THAT has me a bit stumped on the design. I got two vastly different ideas and either would require a lot of work so I'm actually stuck on deciding which design I'll try.

Since I use FAR I'm limited in how crazy I can go with designs.

When I have no clue what to do in KSP, I usually play a completely different game, often one that can be played without thinking too much. If the game doesn't require much focus, or consists of repetitive tasks, the mind drifts to something else, what in my case often enough ends up being planning mission for KSP...

I usually play another game for a few days (*gasp*), watch some Scott Manley, visit these forums or install a new mod (soon MKS, we'll play together veeery soon).

I have strange gaming patterns, where I play a game mono maniacally a game for two weeks, before getting a bit saturated, picking game another game where I left it for a couple of weeks and so on.

These days, I thrive on a healthy diet of KSP, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft Crash Landing...

Like others said, I play a different game (seemingly impossible, but it does occur). Heck, the reason I've stopped recently is because I'm hooked on to other games.

Throw a probe at some random planet and hope it works. I haven't been everywhere yet, so it's more of an experience. I've mainly explored duna and ike, (landed on moho with a probe once), but now I have a giant lander probe going to Eve. I can generally design a lifter quickly enough to get a small probe into orbit, so it's fairly simple.

I had a moho lander, its solar panels weren't autotracking so it couldn't do a crucial manouver. So, when I finally COULD use it, I changed it's course.

It is now en route to eve. Or duna. I forget which. I hope not duna because I just landed a small probe there already. Of course, the fact that it was on a giant slope doesn't help things. I had to tumble it down for 10 minutes before I could get it standing upright... mostly

Image taken while it was tumbling down, I think it peaked at 4 m/s or so. Scary.

I usually go play a different game for a while and come back after the next patch. Playing Hyrule Warriors right now (awesome game btw), haven't even finished the 0.25 tech tree once. Occasionally I'll load up a sandbox and fly around a bit, but I'm not really doing a major game this go round.
