Project Alexandria: a history of spaceflight done in Real Solar System

Thanks!

So to anyone wondering if I will make more of these:

tldr: yes, there will be more episodes eventually

So I've thought about this series, and I am definitely doing more episodes. But I realized why I have not found inspiration to do any in the last few weeks, or near future.

1. Project Odyssey is near the end and I want to finish it. I've mentioned this before.

2. Alexandria requires me to "rebuild" an installation that can be used to make more episodes since 1.0.4 came out. I may have mentioned this before too.

What I have figured out is why those two points have worked together to result in the delay.

Here's why:

If I were to do a new Alexandria then I'd need to rebuild a 1.0.4 install for it.

Rebuilding a 1.0.4 RSS install takes a lot of time.

If Odyssey needs to be finished then I'd probably only do "one year of history" of Alexandria before putting it back down for a long time again.

So the cost of rebuilding the install would not be amortized at all. I'd be spending all that time, and then for all I know there'd be more patches or releases or mod changes, and I'd be doing it all over again for the next time, all to do just ONE Alexandria.

I also have this really strong desire to actually PLAY the game for a while. It has been weeks since I've actually played... like... design something, build it, fly it. The last time was June 6th for the last episode of Gold Strike. Since then I've done nothing but this special Project Odyssey episode I'm on.

As for designing, building, flying, and just playing... I also have a strong desire to try out some of the new mods like MKS Mark V and KIS/KAS that I have never used before. They seem really fun.

Finally, I also have a strong desire to do my interpretation of The Martian in KSP. I actually know Andy. We worked together on a project in the 90s. He came to my house and was the Dungeon Master for some role-playing games. I read his book and I think I could turn it into KSP better than anyone else.

So yea... these are all the reasons Alexandria has not seen a new episode in a long time.

Dear Bob,

Whatever you decide to do, YOU yourself, need to have fun doing it.

In my opinion, that's the most important thing, above all.

I think, that's your strength behind all of this.

I am enjoying the series, because it feels, you are enjoying it.

I hope I could made myself clear.

Your dedication, eye for detail and your way of explaining all, can only last, as long you have fun with it.

So, go on! Play!!

This is not strictly an Alexandria episode, but it IS Real Solar System, so I'll post it here.

I did this in August of 2014 but it took a year to finally get even HALF the video done. I don't have an Alexandria install ready for 1.04 yet so it'll be a while before we see another Alexandria. But we will eventually!

I like how the parameters sync with the real audio! Very impressive!!! I have a question, is 1 mass = 1 ton?

Thank you for noticing. I launched four times trying to get it right, and I had to spend a bit of time clipping and editing afterward too.

Mass is listed in metric tons, just like stock KSP.

UMMM!!! I don't know why I am just seeing this. If there is any reason for you to delay the production of Alexandria it would be because you are making series based on The Martian. I was just gonna ask you about doing a series like that. Also I don't know if you have read Seveneves but honestly I think something like that is right up you alley. I mean its got everything first of all building an ISS then expanding it and then attaching an asteroid to the front of it. Now that doesn't give anything away because its all on the inside front cover and first page. After that I wont give anything else away, the space infrastructure and the imagining of the space infrastructure in the book would be wonderful to see in KSP. Also we are gonna see The Martian on October 2nd. Seveneves could be a long way away so seeing something realized in video even if is in KSP would be wonderful especially by you. Good luck man I look forward to whatever you plan on posting.

If you are planning a Martian series just FYI making the Hermes is actually pretty easy by useing only 3 or 4 mods. You obviously will weld and cfg to make it look exact. But even without doing things like that you can make a pretty convincing and accurate hermes. I did and I had a lot of fun with it. Unfortunately I lost the craft file but I will say it was alot easier than I expected.

hey bob, when you do a full test of the Saturn I it originally had a 2nd stage powered by 6 Rl-10s not a J-2 this was some info i found off a official NASA model set from the late 60s / early 70s re-released for a anniversary I found at a Hobby Lobby.

After Odyssey ended (for me... it'll end for you this Monday) I started installing RSS+RVE and it worked fine, so I started importing some old files and adding mods to it, and that worked fine too, so now it looks like 1962 is going to be my next video after Odyssey has aired.

Hey Bob, an interested question. You mentioned in your last video that you were running very stable in 1.04, having "hardly any crashes". I would be very interested in exchanging install notes (ie: a pic of your gamedata folder would be awesome), because my experience is pretty much the opposite, I have frequent, predictable crashes when I switch scenes. Like, every hour of gameplay or so.

Rune. Do you run it in OpenGL or something?
