Quit to Desktop

I miss the old days of DOS gaming where most games had a menu item called "Quit to Desktop". You could still quit to the main menu in case you wanted to load another game save. But when you were done, you could just skip all those menus and be done.

I would love a similar option in KSP. Backing out of those menus just to quit the game is just time consuming.

Could anyone make a plugin that adds a Quit to Desktop option to the menus?

If you use a Windows OS, you can use ALT+F4, which is a hard-coded OS command for "Close focused window".

Other OS probably have a similar command, and you can probably change what key combo does that if you're running Linux (because, well... Linux).

Sure it's an old-school command (has worked since windows 95 or earlier), but it's old-school because "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", and because it's just that useful. Also, for Windows users, it's probably only less well known than the "three finger salute" of CTRL-ALT-DEL.

More keyboard shortcuts here, if you want to learn more about how to use your non-mouse hand more when interacting with your OS.

Pros of Alt+F4:

No menu navigation - Cuts thru pesky "Are you sure?" dialog boxes like a sharp knife thru wet tissue paper.

Hard coded into the OS - Only ever does one thing: Force Exit Program. Also means that it works on hung programs - If the OS is running (not a BSOD) then a hung program can be killed by it.

Doesn't try to save data - If you did something you didn't want to save (ex. crash a ship in KSP without a quicksave or revert handy) you can use this command to bypass any attempts the program might make at saving your "mistake" for you.

Cons:

No menu navigation - Even if you didn't mean to press it, it's going to close the program.

Hard coded into the OS - Works on any Windows OS, other OS probably have their own key combo for the same result, but I don't know for sure.

Doesn't try to save data - Might mess up save data if you trigger this command in the middle of saving. Halfway done saves are usually fully corrupted.

(The best way to avoid this in KSP is to wait until "Autosaving" or "Quicksaving" disappears from the lower right corner of your screen just above where the crew portraits are)

I've used this since before I started playing KSP, and it's never corrupted a single save (because I don't do it when it's saving).

It also works when KSP is on the loading screen, which is useful for modders and people who tweak stuff to their liking, especially when you only remember that you wanted to mod something just after you launched KSP.

Alt+F4 is also useful as a "universal ragequit" command, if you do that a lot (universal as in it works for anything, not as in ragequitting the universe :P )

Edit:

Upon further consideration, a "quit to desktop" menu item would probably be better, if only because KSP would have more control over how it closes itself down (basically letting KSP "clean up after itself" under its own control). That and it would be more user-friendly, which is never a bad thing.

Hello, that's done.

QuickExit release link

Download:

Kerbal Stuff

Kerbal CurseForge

Github

Licence information:

gplv3-88x31.png

GPL v3

Source code:

github

How does it work ?

You have three solutions to launch QuickExit:

- push on f7,

- with the stock toolbar,

- with the Blizzy toolbar (an optional mod).

How to install it ?

Unzip all files. Put the QuickExit folder in your KSP/GameData folder.

How to uninstall it ?

Delete the QuickExit folder in your KSP/GameData folder.
