The Grand Orbital Space Station Challenge [closed to new entries]

Recommended Posts

Here's my entry for the challenge. I managed to get it into an orbit around the Mun and send a lander down, but the station didn't have enough fuel left to make it back to Kerbin.

It's named Space Station "Lebensraum" which is German for "any additional space needed in order to act, function, etc."ns (And it also meant territory..)

It's one of my biggest, most extreme engineering works I've ever done.

Javascript is disabled. View full album

The Space Station itself (with landers) has a total weight of 274.63 tons (x100) = 17262

Comfortable seats (Hitchhikers, Mk3 Cabins = 144 Seats (x200) = 28800

7 manned science labs included = (x500) = 3500

Six two-Kerbal Capacity Landers* = (x1000) = 6000 (*May or may not be part of final equation)

To keep things safe, I didn't include the landers due to their disability to dock. (Please clarify if this is valid or not)

All of them combined = 49562 - (2766.63 t x2 = 5533.26) = 44028.74

44028.74 x 0.75 = 33021.555 (Final Score

Due to the extreme score, there's a chance I may have misdone calculations..

Thanks in advance! :)

Columbia,

This looks good. I only need a few pieces of information before I can assign it a score: 1) How many kerbals are on the station? And 2) What was the mass of the station after the Munar orbit was lowered? The rules state that the orbit has to be no fewer than 10 km nor more than 1,000 km above the edge of atmosphere or surface of the body it's orbiting. The only screen shot with kinda/sorta orbital information showed the station at 1,180 km, with the apoapsis even higher than that. If you can let me know what the mass is now, and/or reduce the apoapsis so it's lower than 1,000 km and then let me know, I can score your station.

One bit of clarification - there's only one 500-point bonus for a science lab, and one 1,000-point bonus for having one or more landers. More labs and more landers can look cool, but they unfortunately don't count for additional points. Don't worry about recalculating the score - I'll handle it after you provide those two bits of information.

Thanks!

At the time of launch, I believe it was around 40 Kerbals.

And I fortunately had a screenshot of the orbit of the station - According to the stats, it's 242.17 tons, and the Apoapsis is at least 37,400 m after the orbital lowering. According to the album, the periapsis should be around 36,000 meters.

Here it is, for reference: 2m466wn.png

Thanks!

Congratulations, Columbia! You have completed the Grand Orbital Space Station Challenge with a Stock(ish) Division entry scoring 39,725 points!

I backed out the extra points for multiple landers and science labs, added in the points for 40 kerbals, and included the full mass of all the landers since the craft are definitely dedicated to the station. Well done with an attractive radial symmetry design. And although it's difficult, it's not impossible to dock landers without monoprop. Those Mk3 passenger cabins are definitely the way to go for a mass-effective kerbal count - when the challenge started back in 0.25, crew capacities tended to be a bit smaller.

Feel free to add the badge to your sig. If you liked the challenge, rep is always appreciated. Well done!

Thanks! It took me a long time to be able to make a proper station - My first attempt was decommisioned after the second module had difficulties docking, and this station ended up being my most ambitious one when I decided to cram all the science, habitation and fueling into six modules.

Thanks again! :D

I have an entry for the GOSSC. I present to you Llanfairpwllgwyngyll (aka the Welsh Village of

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch). It's not mighty, it's not grand, boyo. But, it was built entirely from spaceplane launches. So thereby, it really only cost the parts and the fuel. (I tracked the fuel but not the parts cost...). I have no expectations as I now tally up the score. Although, I could technically attach each Fat Boy launch vehicle to the station and therefore null and void the multi-launch penalty with an additional 35-40t per launch! Woo! But, ain't nobody got time for that. I could probably shove it somewhere, but it'll wobble apart. I'm happy with it in LKO and to hell with the points penalty.

Excuse the horrible images, it seems that on KSP + Mac anything but crap graphics settings is Kraken bait.

It breaks down into eight (8) launches. Seven were with the Fat Boy platform and the final used the Kestrel I crew shuttle (attached as run around to the station).

Scoring:

85.27t in LKO = +8,527

All launches; 390t = -780

Six Kerbals on the station = +600

Comfy seats for 17 Kerbals (not counting Kestrel I's comfy seats); = +3,400

Manned science lab, check = +500

Dedicated Lander/Shuttle (Kestrel I) = +1,000

Escape pod with seats for six = +1,000

Total: 14,247, less the I'm too lazy to leave Kerbin penalty = 3,561.75

Flight #, Payload, Payload tonnage, Final Fuel cost in Kerbals not rupees.

Craft Downloads as used in each launch if you want it - with the Fat Boy, just watch the fuel balance when you reenter the atmosphere. Fat Boy can lift at least 36t to LKO. And better piloting should yield a 40t...? All collated in a single zip. If you don't have MechJeb you'll want to run it through the craft cleaner, that's the only mod on them. Intakes are balanced so have at it. At 36+t of payload you need to be gentle with it, it's a lumbering pig. But it will do it.

FlipNascar,

Well done on having the first station launched entirely inside cargo bays. As I indicated a few pages ago on this post you'll get a 3,000 point bonus for constructing the station that way. You can also subtract out the recovered weight of any craft. If you have landing weights for each of your space plane runs, either post them (and I'll calc it) or subtract the total landed weight from the total launch weight before figuring the -2 points per ton. Once that info is posted, I can give you an official score and put you on the leaderboard.

Wish I'd seen that post! I didn't read every page... but I do have dry mass, and therefore can calculate landed weight, you would be able to recreate the landed weights in the SPH (more or less) - each craft file I uploaded is as it was for each launch if you want to double check.

Fat Boy has a Dry Weight (includes Monoprop) of 26.6t

LF is 5kg/litre

O is 5kg/litre

Kestrel is excluded because it's permanently assigned to the station.

In the meantime:

Fat Boy (Launch 1) 52.4t at start, landed with 862/1199 (10.305t) so landed weight 36.9t.

Fat Boy II (Launch 2) 61.4t at start, landed with 787/806, (7.96t) landed weight 34.56t

Fat Boy III (Launch 3) 45.9t at start, landed with 1033/698 (8.655t) landed weight 35.25t

Fat Boy IV (Launch 4) 45.1t at start, landed with 761/526 (6.435t), landed 33.04t

Fat Boy V (Launch 5) 49.0t at start, landed with 536/234 (3.85t), landed weight 30.45t

Fat Boy VI (Launch 6) 42.1t at start, landed with 796/472 (6.34t), landed weight 32.94t

Fat Boy VII.b (Launch 7) 84.5t at start, landed with 37.9/83.28 (0.6059t), landed weight 27.2t

Kestrel I (Launch 8) 14.1t at start, no recovery bonus.

85.27t in LKO = +8,527

All launches; (390t - 230.34t recovered)*2 = -319.2

Six Kerbals on the station = +600

Comfy seats for 17 Kerbals (not counting Kestrel I's comfy seats); = +3,400

Manned science lab, check = +500

Dedicated Lander/Shuttle (Kestrel I) = +1,000

Escape pod with seats for six = +1,000

Ikea Space Station Bonus = +3,000

Total: 17,707.8, less the I'm too lazy to leave Kerbin penalty = 4,426.95

Congratulations, FlipNascar! You have completed the Grand Orbital Space Station Challenge with a Stock(-ish) Division entry scoring 4,826.95 points!

Truly an impressive feat to do the whole thing with cargo bay launches. I counted the comfy seats on the shuttle as well - if Worf can go into the Defiant when it's docked to DS9 to listen to Klingon opera at high volume, then it seems to me that a ship attached to the station is functionally a part of that station. Interesting use of the claw - I know some players have had trouble with that particular part. Part count is a little high for the size of the station, but that tends to happen with modular designs.

Feel free to add the badge to your sig. If you enjoyed the challenge, rep is always appreciated. Well done!

I would like to submit my entry. My goal was to make a station better than my previous Jool 5 mission at 1/3 the weight. I did it at 1/2.

making a reusable stock rover was a fun challenge too.

Still figuring out points, but here's my clear break down anyway. The Jool multiplyer doesn't take into account landing on all its moons but this was how I wantted to spend my mission.

Tons in LKO = 1014 = + 101400

--Tons in Jool orbit = 684 = + 68400

----Tons in Laythe orbit = well, now it just gets complicated. do I do this for every moon? the rules say each celestial body with everything attached :P

----Laythe = 325 = + 32500

----Tylo = 281 = + 28100

----Vall = 52 = + 5200

----Bop = 56 = + 5600

----Pol = 52 = + 5200

Tons at launch = 4583 -Minus- -9166

237234

Kerbal on station = 10 + 1000

Comfortable seat = all 10 kerbals had a comfortable seat + 2000

Manned Science lab = true + 500

Snacks = false

Life support = false

Entire station and its rover landed on all moons with all 10 kerbals. IDK 1k per moon or none because its the whole station and not a dedicated craft?

All crew got home safe = + 1000

No harvesting

No life support

made orbit around and landed on; Kerbin, Jool(no landing), Laythe, Tylo, Vall, Bop, pol.

----- Is this just X3 or do we count each time I landed and launched from a moon as separate occurrences?

Mods used are MechJeb, and TAC fuel.

Wow, nobody's entered the Altered Universe division, yet? Since I'm running New Horizons and am a station fiend, I shall take on the challenge!

Update:

Wow, my heavy lifter construction techniques are USELESS with nuFAR. This... may take a while. Especially since I'm determined to make it steampunk with the help of a parts-pack mod...

Wa just wondering whether this challenge is still on. I have been working on a rather massive Space Station, would be a shame to see it discarded...

Also, what about extraplanetary launchpads? If I send up the mining and refining infrastructure would I be permitted to construct some sections of the station, landers etc in situ?

And what about the hangars mod? All that does is save on part count since you can store vessels in a hangar, reducing the effective part count from say 150 to one. Mass is preserved and the hangar weight increases with the mass of the ship so no advantages in dV, it just cuts down on part count and wobble.

Sorry for the delayed response - RL has been busy, and I've been spending most of my limited KSP time on the Apollo Applications Program challenge.

Yes, this challenge is still going on. I'll review parzrs entry shortly.

EPL will put an entry into the Advanced Technology division, the same as Interstellar, as stated in the OP. I'm not familiar with hangars, but it sounds like that would also go in the Advanced Technology division.

parzr, I'm sorry it's taken so long to get to this. Most of my KSP time lately has been absorbed by the shiny new 1.0 version of KSP and the Apollo Applications Program Challenge thread, so I'm afraid I haven't been checking in here as often as I should.

This was a very unique entry. It seemed much more like a typical Jool-5 mission than an orbital space station, which is sort of the name of the challenge. After reflection, what I'm going to do is pretend like your mission log ends after photo #21 in your album (the first slide that shows you in a captured Joolian orbit) for tonnage and points purposes, and act as if you left the station in orbit around Jool at that point. In that slide, your station/craft is 337 tons. Based on that information and what you've previously posted, that gives you a score of 87,102. Congratulations - that puts you in third place in the stock(-ish) division.

If I understand the hangar mods documentation correctly the mass of a stored ship is not lost, I was thinking it would mainly be really usefull for sending the whole station plus everything else in one go, but I guess it's not necesarry.

Also two more questions (sorry but my brain can't seem to think of all the questions at once).

I would much like to do this in my carreer savegame because I want stations and bases everywhere and it would save me the effort of launching everything twice. However there are two potential problems, firstly because of all the mods I use it is still .90 (B9 and kethane don't have official updates yet). Also, I have KSP-Interstellar installed, which would put it in the future technology division. However, I'm not planning on using interstellar for this challenge, so would that put it in the modded division. I was thinking since KSPI uses completely different resources than stock KSP I could simply leave the resource panel open in every screenshot (save for beauty shots of course) and thereby prove that I did not use it.

Just asked about the stored vessels in the thread

First of all, thanks for this mod, as I am still waiting for 1.0 updates on other mods I can use this (yay) so I will download it soon. One question however concerning stored vessels. The OP states that vessels are unloaded, does this mean their mass is removed as well? Or does the mod account for that seperately?
The mass of the vehicle gets added to the hangar but the parts for the craft are not loaded so you get less lag.

While this functionality is wildly different from stock I thought it might still be acceptable since it doesen't provide any unfair advantages (that I am aware of) over not using it, apart from less lag.

TheXRuler, it seems to me like Hangars is in the same boat as part welder, in that it's primarily about reducing part count. It would therefore be considered a modded division entry, not advanced technology, the same as part welder.
