Upcoming forum change.

Of course they will. They always are. To the best of my knowledge, anyway. It might be a bit of a logistical nightmare here and there (and will likely require some forum downtime to accomplish when the time comes), but I can see no reason why they'd just ditch everything. Member profiles should of course be copied over also.

90% of a forum is its history and its members. It would be insanity to start afresh, in my mind. Some super old stuff might be archived here and there, though, depending.

I'm interested to hear what the details will be. Its is mostly stuff under the hood, or will the format of profiles and posts change? Will we need to replace links in sigs and whatnot?

I assume things like rep, and post count will be preserved.

I actually do not know if rep will be preserved. I hope so, but depending on the differences in how the new software handles that side of things, it may be very difficult to transfer some parts of user profiles over.

I'm wary of giving too much detail, since I don't know if the software we're currently playing around with is the sole one the higher-ups are considering, or if they plan to test a few different things to see what works best. As far as I know, this one's looking pretty solid, but I cannot be certain.

Format of posts will be quite similar, but for the most part you'll do all your post editing in WYSIWYG (rich text) mode -- the new forum software does not apparently have a BBCode plaintext mode (though presumably you can format with BBCode if you wish to). I don't know if signatures will be directly ported across, but that should be pretty simple, provided signature images and the like are all in one place. Some users' signature images (if they've uploaded them to the forum) may or may not be lost, depending.

Please remember that with a lot of this I am simply speculating, trying to work out what is almost certainly directly portable between softwares (things like posts, avatar, post counts, possibly signatures) and what may have issues (reputation, profile data, blog posts, etc.). I am not, however, privy to any of the back-end parts of either forum software, so all I can offer is a best guess at my own perception of what may or may not be difficult to port over. Also, if the software we're currently looking at turns out to not be the end choice for whatever reason, all these assumptions and speculations of course go out the window.

Ew. The first thing I do on every forum I join is turn off WYSIWYG mode.

Damn. Editing in BBCode is half the fun sometimes but as long as it still works...

I hope those negatives prove incorrect, it would be quite disappointing to have those things reset. Is it worth it?

Is there a reason behind the change? Vbulletin seems to work...

*shrugs* At the least, it works a lot better than vB's WYSIWYG editor. And if you would rather not, BBCode seems to still work. At any rate, I highly doubt anything's solidly set in stone just yet.

As for the rest... only Kasper and the ones in charge of him can answer that; I'm not privy to that information.

:o I just got this far in rep, i hope it's not too bad.

I also hope the forum stays as easy to use as it is now - and i hope it has a subscriptions section, otherwise i won't be able to keep track of all the threads I watch.

Sleek new forum? It looks cool, anyway, and some of the new functions are quite interesting. I'm not actually certain of the exact reason behind the change, but I suspect it may have something to do with just how annoying vBulletin is to fiddle with. Kasper could tell you, if he wants to. :P

Comrades, it is time to redistribute the rep. The 1% have been conspicuously consuming rep and keeping it out of the hands of the 99%, most of whom barely have enough rep to make ends meet. The 1% didn't give themselves all that rep, it came from the common posters. We should take all the rep points that have been given and distribute them equally to all members after the revolution forum upgrade. Then we should put all the usernames in a hat and assign them randomly to posters, that will prevent any favoritism.

yeah, yeah. Let's not get out of hand here, lest i have to call you out for roleplaying. :P

Viva la revolution! All hail Napolean Bonaparte! ALL HAIL LENIN! :)

In all seriousness, I don't care for rep much... :P It would, however, be interesting to see certain individuals scrambling to horde rep. :)

Also, do you have confirmation that you'll copy over the banned profiles? I'd hate for certain individuals to return... certain individuals who have a very red theme.

I will miss the rep, but if everything else saves/is better, I'm fine. As long as all the old threads don't break format too :P
You mean like how when we switched to vB (or was it the one before that? I don't know, it was forever ago), every instance of a single quote had the backslash before it? Or are you referring to something else? Because honestly, that was annoying enough, I tell you. :P

Heh, perhaps.

No idea on the banned profiles, though. I don't see why not, but there might be some complications, who knows.

The current lack of extreme roleplaying on the Rocket Builders subforum may depend on the copying of the ban list. :) :)

You say these things as though I haven't been carefully watching all of it. :P

And if there's trouble, we'll deal with it, same as always. :)

I know. (BTW the mods really have been doing a good job) :)

Well, the Rocket Builders is more like the East Pacific. One wrong move, and it all goes up in flames. :D

I wonder if things like everyone's rep and post count, rep, join date etc. could be archived, then artificially set, like how they do for official profiles. These things can be helpful, as they do offer a little info about the people you're talking to.

I mean, you can tell some with thousands of posts probably has a little experience in things.

Potential new features do sound cool though.
