Life Size Space Shuttle

So zekes, I know you made this before .90, have you been able to achieve any part savings since then by using gizmos? I knocked off 180 parts from my Saturn V, so you might be able to do some optimization, which is always good.

Anyway, this craft is truly inspiring. Keep up the good work.

I'm going to try tomorrow, I bet i can save a lot of parts, mostly struts. It is so touchy though, i'm afraid of redoing too much and having it not work.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have so many versions of this thing I have no idea which is which.... I did go back today and fix the falling strut issue, no idea if the fuel lines feed right anymore. If someone with a good computer and great piloting skills could test this, that would be great.

Likely issues:

- Bottom of Main tank tends to fall off

- Fuel for OMS probably flows wrong (dam, i hate testing this part because it's so late on the ascent and it's about 45 minutes/test.

I know, it swelled up a LOT - here's what the original design called for - Three Mainsails and two Skippers, but then I upgraded - and the KR-2Ls are barely enough as it is.

Also, First post has been updated with awesome new graphics for the shuttle.

Someday, when I'm better at doing this sort of stuff, I'll build a shuttle to put this to shame......

Good luck to you, as size gets bigger, control falls off exponentially - I wish i knew how to code, I could write a launch procedure code for the shuttle, since the indidual engine throttling is thankfully predictable.

Ascent is hell but after that it's a dream.

Zekes just wondering have you ever made an orbital craft under 50 parts, also how much DeltaV does the shuttle have and finally have you come up with a name?

Three more questions I just had,

1: How much parts are in one Booster.

2: How much parts are in the Orange tank.

3: How much parts is the orbiter itself

Do you mean launcher?

21 parts puts 4 tonnes to LKO.

Stats for the shuttle, by tearing it apart. I assume there are about 100 extra struts on the Shuttle, 25 for the Orange Tank, and probably a dozen for the SRBs.

The shuttle has just enough to orbit plus mabye 200 once in LKO - it's not huge. Up and down is pretty much all it can do.

I called the shuttle the "Hercules" on the first launch but i like just calling it Life Size Space Shuttle.

SRBs are 72 parts each

Orange Tank is 233 parts

Orbiter is 931 parts (Although the one in my Sub-assembly says 888)

You know, this makes me want to strap 6 or 8 SRBs to a central core to make a neat lifter - they're reliable as hell and low part count for being so big.

Also, one final note - i have made two shuttles before, with reasonable payloads - but the Life Size Space Shuttle was special built to a) beat Giggle's shuttle by B) Being the largest shuttle in KSP (that worked).

Will this suffice?

Yes, I can definitly say that I am impressed. the only awkward thing (nothing that you did) was the size of the landing gear itself. Again, the fact that the thing can land is impressive. The size of gear...due to being stack gear, can be overlooked

Where is this? I'm on your channel and I don't see a video with 56,000 views :P

I unlisted it recently. A bit of a third part dispute on the audio track, but it'll be back.

Riding the Korra/Avatar hype train. You can manipulate reddit viewers even more easily.

Yeah, I stick to KSP uploads so the viewer range is less popular.

And as we speak the Shuttle vid's gone up another 200 views. XD I should probably make a new video with the updated shuttle and less ums.

My desktop (with shadowplay) is out of commission due to a lack of a wireless network adapter. I'll have to find a way to make a video without murdering my laptop.
