Super fast takeoff spaceplane.

Recommended Posts

I shall be blunt. Most space planes are kind of boring when it comes to takeoff, and are only fun during flight. I just watched a fighter launch off of an aircraft carrier, and it was fast. The basic jet engine is a puttery little thing until you actually get going, and you hardly have the time to wait for the end of the runway.

Would somebody please find me a craft that jumps up to like 110 m/s in five seconds? Also post the craft file because I want a rush from flying it.

Thanks

Both of the planes in my company can get off the ground pretty fast, especially if you take off the missiles in the SPH and keep the brakes on while the engines spool up. (click the picture in my signature) And they can both make it to LKO.

If you want this to be an actual challenge, why don't you include some rules? maybe, fastest speed in 5 seconds or shortest time to 150m/s, and must be able to make it to orbit? Also if you ditch the "space" part and just go with a plane, it isn't hard to get a very fast and maneuverable plane at low altitude. Or you can just add a bunch of separatrons on radial decouplers for a RATO (Rocket Assisted Take Off) approach and make just about any plane go fast quickly.

Fighters on aircraft carriers are assisted by a catapult underneath the deck. They wouldn't take off that fast if they were on a regular runway.

Building that catapult system would be an interesting challenge though. Just use one of the stock craft and make the challenge about assisting it to get to absurd speed before the end of the runway. highest achieved speed wins, or quickest ascent to 20K, or shortest time to mach 1 at sea level. take your pick or make them all achievements on top of another challenge.

I've got this small one that takes off pretty early but just because it needs only 67m/s.

It climbs fast too, but the practical range is very limited during jet powered flights and it takes ages for the ion vacuum burns.

Actually, jet fighters launched from a carrier launch slower than the would from a regular runway. Most fighters are not yet moving fast enough to maintain flight when they leave the deck.

What you meant to say is they launch more quickly. Using less time.

i did work out the kinks on this pint-sized powerhouse lately:

screenshot12.png

it's ~3,400 kg and has a sea level TWR of ~2.5 with the Rapier which means that you can simply point it at any angle above the horizon and it will just keep going straight up at a colossal rate until it launches straight out of the atmosphere, even with no oxidizer on board (its accumulated momentum is easily enough for a 150 km hop). with NEAR it can also exceed mach 2 at sea level (!), but then (unsurprisingly) it becomes excessively responsive to control input. i experimented with a heavier version with oxidizer for orbital use, but its dV performance was mediocre and and you'll also notice that it has no cargo bay, docking ports or seating for more than one kerbal, making it absolutely useless for any sort of practical purpose at all. regardless, it is very, very fun to launch and fly.

Well, I know that there is a launching rail on an aircraft carrier, I just meant I wanted to see a spaceplane that can take off with absurd speed without any wait such as the engines spooling up. I have tried to just attach SRBs to stock planes and see if it helped, but it usually goes about a foot and explodes.

any chance you could show us side and top views of that little beaut? preferably with com/col showing ;)

This has not been created as a challenge, it is more of a craft request. If this IS a craft request, this should have been created in the rocket builders sub forum. If it is in fact a challenge, the OP should be reworded. Take a look at the challenge submission guide to see how to properly submit a challenge (if it is a challenge).

Welcome to the forums!
