Do my outposts need to be inhabited?

Got a mission to construct an outpost. The top line says "can support" while the objectives says "supporting". Do I need to pile all of the Kerbals in, or do I just need room for them?

I haven't quite gotten far enough to get those contracts yet (hard difficulty... because masochism is so much fun), but I would imagine you need to have however many kerbals in the outpost for it to count; it wouldn't be much of an outpost if it was unoccupied

I'm not sure anymore, but I believe that the contracts indeed required the minimum Kerbals to indeed be present in .25 (with the Fine Print mod, which is what this is based on)

Stations don't need to have crews so I'm assuming bases don't either. As long as they have enough enough space to hold the required number of Kerbals they should meet the contract requirements.

The one mission I did for a a surface station on Duna needed room for 19 Kerbals, but I didn't send any at all, I used a probe core to fly it there. The contract completed just fine.

I even wrecked the station as it landed, and still got credit. More story on that here.

very nice apparently I was wrong about you needing the kerbals there, but hell, I'd send them anyway for the fun of it (and as an incentive to not screw up)

I should probably learn precision landing skills ... instead, I've learned "land a few km away on wheels with significant velocity" skills.

What defines an "Outpost" according to the contracts? How is an "Outpost" different than "2 landers on the surface relatively close together"?

I believe it's any one craft that meets the requirements. That said, docking is perfectly legal, but 2 landers next to each other is not. (I think this is the case, haven't played much career in 0.90.)

Yeah, that makes sense. It'd be quite a bit more complicated to check if there are a group of vessels close together that combined satisfy the contract, compared to just checking if the one you're flying does (do you need to be piloting it? hmm...)

Thanks, but I guess I'm still not clear...say the contract requires "an outpost with at least one docking port" (for the sake of argument, no other requirements). If I land a simple ship with nothing but a pod, a fuel tank, an engine and a docking port, that counts as an "Outpost" for the purposes of the contract?

Yup, if that's all the contract wants.
