[0.22] ISA MapSat 4.0 Dev Build

Man, I love this mod. Mapping the anomalies from space is fantastic. But the memory requirements are insane for a single-purpose mod; more than any of the huge part catalogs like KW, NovaPunch, or Kosmos. Just adding MapSat to the game with one on my rocket and the rocket on the launch pad brought the RAM use up just under Gig. I hadn't even started mapping. Anyway, with the mods I like to use, this one puts me way over the RAM limit and locks the game (unless I strip out half my mods). You've got to reduce the memory footprint somehow. Is there anything you can run in a separate process with its own RAM space? Most of us are running 64 bit OS's and don't have a problem with multiple programs grabbing as much memory as they want.

I use Win7 64 bit with 12 Gig RAM.

Black pixels require no less memory than green, red or blue pixels.

Then perhaps there should be an option to reduce the image resolution for the maps. Being able to zoom in really close on the maps can be handy, but I would rather go back to the old resolution if it means reducing the memory footprint back to the 3.x sizes.

Kerbal.net` is not really secure. Squad has said that they aren't affiliated with them at all, and that people are having their computers infected by the site...

EDIT: The ` was placed there so it does not become a link.

It's working okay for me...just seems to need some optimization. There is lag (the game will repeatedly freeze for an instant or two on a fairly regular cycle, such as once every minute of mission time), and I'm regularly running right at maximum memory use--I don't dare run ISA with more than a handful of other plugins.

Using just the GPS unit doesn't help with these issues; it lags and eats memory the same as the full module.

this the problem i got, love the mod but i cant use it because of the lag :(

Love this mod a lot myself just wondering when we'll see any updates on the progress, .21 is getting close to release and all we have is the dev build. I'm not complaining mind you just curious the status of the mod at the moment.

The lag you're seeing is probably the memory issue too. It's most likely that you're out of RAM and paging to the hard drive. It all boils down to this excellent mod is a memory hog and we can't use it because of this.

If the OP is hard-pressed for time, it would be awesome if he/she would post the source code to this overwhemlingly popular plugin so someone could get it up to snuff, or at least fork it.

same here, I put the part on but it has no activation option or any sort of gui.

Ditto that. I have no UI for ISA MapSat. Everything is installed, I have parts that I can pick and place just nothing else.... No maps, no extra UI, no buttons.

What should I expect to see?

AMD FX 8120, 16GB DDR3 RAM, AMD 7970, Win7 x64 Ultimate

I'm not at home right now but I can provide map view screenshots if required? Nothing stands out in KSP console either but I'll check again in a few hours.

For anyone having the memory issue try lowering your KSP graphics settings. This worked for me! If you have a lot of mods you could also try removing parts you do not use.

Innsewerants deserves some more time and a bit more respect dont you think?

After you place either a dish or tiny receiver from the mod on your craft (in the science section of editor) you'll see an icon at the bottom left corner of your screen. That'll bring up the mapping interface. Note that if you changed your UI size, it might overlay with the game's UI.

Question. Will the memory issue cause the game to freeze? I uninstalled mapsat because every craft I put it on caused the game to freeze. And I find it hard to believe KSP using up all the RAM I have, could be wrong but pretty sure I have 2 x 8GB RAM sticks.

I didn't mean innsewerants any disrespect, but I could see how it could have been interpreted that way. I definitely think he/she has done an excellent job on the mod. As far as more time: A new KSP update is right around the corner and there still isn't a version of this mod that works with the current version of KSP. Innsewerents has said him/herself that they haven't had time to commit to working on it.

There are over a hundred pages of people complaining about how the cobbled-together dev version isn't working well for them and Innsewerants has been MIA for a month. With a new version of KSP right around the corner, it almost seems like we might be playing a constant game of catch-up. I'm sure there are a number of people (me included) that would love to help if given the chance.

I'm having the same problem as the other guy. What exactly is the installation procedure? I put the stuff in a folder in GameData, but the parts didn't even show up. Then I installed it the legacy way and now the parts show up (in the aerodynamics category, not science), but nothing works.

Edit: Never mind. I found what I was doing wrong. I kinda feel like an idiot, but then again the OP is terribly unclear. Why on earth would the actual update be in a blog post in the sig instead of in the actual OP?

I still can't figure it out. I can see stuff in the aerodynamics category, not science, and I don't have the UI. I have an orbiting satellite with a dish on it, but I cannot activate it. I believe I followed the installation instructions correctly. Where have I gone wrong?

No, since an app can only use half and the other half is reserved for the kernel ( unless you use the /3GB switch )

I'm not quite 100% certain, but I think that only applies to a 32-bit OS because KSP (along with other 32-bit applications) can indeed use over 3GB on it's own.

Because it's not an actual update. It's a "I know the old version doesn't work with the latest update, so here's an unfinished version that I'm working on that will work", which is awesome of the OP to do to get most people up and running. I just wish the actual update becomes available soon.

Delete parts... and lots of them. I see that you have a lot of mods installed, and ISA 4.0 is a BEAST with memory.

When KSP freezes like that, bring up the task manager and look at KSP's memory use. If memory serves, it'll be spiked and hanging.

I won't even attempt to launch a ship with MapSat capability unless KSP has a gig o' headroom. Yay 32-bit.

I know they will bring the 64B out when it's stable, but does anyone know the abouts on when? Month? 6 months? year? our life time?
