Custom Kerbal Role

Hello I'm sure everyone knows about kerbal roles;

  1. Pilots - Control Ship attitude
  2. Engineers - repair wheels, landing legs and repack parachutes
  3. Scientists - have a scientist return bonus

My question is how would I go about making my own role. Here's what it would look like;

  • Civilian - offers basic attitude control; programs, retrograde, point at meuneuver, point at target and stability assist.
  • Has a 75% Science return boost
  • Can repack parachutes.

Also in Sandbox can all kerbals pilot vessels and restock parachutes, etc.?

Also one last question, how would I edit an existing kerbals role?

Moving this to Add-on Development as this would definitely require a plugin at the moment, but it's not clear whether you'd prefer to do that yourself or make a request.

As a reminder, if you see something that needs a moderator's attention, hit the report button rather than posting about it in thread.

On topic, Kerbal roles are currently hard-coded by their names – you can't even change their roles without a plugin. That may change in future releases. Once you have a plugin to do that, you may be able to add a new class and create new traits.

Moved to Plugin Development Help & Support. Near as I can tell, this is about where this kind of question fits best. It certainly couldn't be done without some sort of plugin, I should think :)

This wasn't really a mod request but more of a question on how to change what kerbals roles are.

But really Jeb, Bill and Bob should have a boost in all skills, seeing as they are celebrities.

You can't. It appears that a Kerbal's role is determined by his name. In the software they probably run it through a hash to create a number, and then they run the modular of it to get 0, 1, or 2. They also very likely created the hash so that Jeb, Bill, and Bob are 0, 1, and 2 before the modular, so if they add other professions in the future the "big 3" will stay that way.

I don't like it. I'd like to be able to change careers or even double up. Why not a pilot/engineer?

To allow some strategy in choosing what kerbals you send up to start. Realistically speaking, while all astronauts are cross-trained, they are all still specialists in particular fields. Nobody can train to be proficient in everything a space mission requires, and if we tried it would make space missions take longer to begin and be even more expensive than they are. It would be nice to be able add more roles though. Colonist/Civilian could be fun, haha.
