So, I got a 3D printer as a christmas/graduation (college) present... I must say I am the happiest I have ever been!

Just thought I'd share some pictures!

I am so excited!

I just had to come here and post these pictures because they have the little Shapeways Kerbals in them :)

Does anyone else have any sweet 3D printing setups?

I have been waiting YEARS to get a printer!

i might swing for a solidoodle next fall if i dont have any unforeseen expenses in the near future.

I still want a printer that prints in chicken format.

i believe its called another chicken and a rooster. i wont go into how it all works, its very complex, but you put corn in and out comes chickens.

No, what I meant is that the printer has a chicken input, and a printed-on chicken comes out covered in text or images.

What kind of printer?

Either way, kool!

It's a Printrbot Simple Metal.

I did a ton of research, and this is what I determined to be the best bang for the buck.

It's "only" $530.

For that price, the build quality of the parts is amazing!

I can only print PLA right now, but I plan on using some of the money I acquired from the holidays to upgrade to a heated bed to allow for ABS printing.

ABS printing? Isn't that the plastic LEGO uses?

Either way, you are one lucky kerbal!

ABS is what Legos are made of, yes. Some printers can handle it, but mine can't yet. This PLA stuff has a lower melting point, but it's more brittle, and not quite as durable.

Yeah it's a ton of fun so far :)

I am still trying to dial it in, and I spent most of today installing my new work-station, so I didn't get much time to work on it...

(It's actually an old work station from Raytheon... I was tired of working on a 3.5' wide plastic folding table! Now I've got 6x3' of industrial grade workspace, with 2 sets of drawers underneath, and a big shelf on top!)

I did do this, though :)

It rather depends on what you use it for. PLA can be as good or even superior in a lot of applications. Added bonus is that it is biodegradable, so your experiments will not stay around for millions of years or eat into our fossil fuel reserves.

The most notable mechanical difference is actually the lower glass temperature of PLA. It makes for easier and more hassle free printing, though it does mean you should not print any parts that come into close contact with heat sources. The fumes are also a lot less smelly (and some claim less dangerous).
