Contract to measure temperature - "cannot be done right now"

I have a contract to measure temperature at various places on or above Gilly. Contract says above 5800 m. I'm at 6630 m and it says the temperature scan can't be done right now. Is this a bug or am I doing it wrong? "Above 5800 m" isn't very helpful; 2E99 m is above 5800 m.

There's a known bug where you can get contracts to do experiments above the maximum altitude for that experiment, however your contract is in fact doable . You need to be below 6000 m above Gilly to do temperature scans. It's a tight margin, but it is possible

Fortunately, with no timewarp below 8000m you'll have plenty of time to click the button to take a measurement

Ha! I just made a thread elsewhere about that! If I switch to a different vessel, the one orbiting Gilly disappears/crashes! It's 1 hr 30 per orbit!!

ALT key is your friend. It may only be 4x warp, but its faster than nothing...

Yep, Alt+> gives you Physics Warp, useful for many things, like long burns.

Also, you can timewarp in the tracking station at any speed.

Somewhat off topic: sometimes temperature scans can't be done (even with no contract, just "doing science"). Temperature scans should always be able to be done, regardless of science points (or lack of them).

Back on topic: I've never done physics warp, only time warp. That's nice to know since some burns are insanely long.

Huh. That's an interesting idea for bugfixing; make temperature scans always possible but only make them give you science in some situations?

The only potential problem I can think of is that's much different from the way other scientific instruments in KSP work, so the "0 science" bit might confuse some people.

I finally officially registered here-- new player of two weeks-- to personally thank armagheddonsgw for the remark about the bug where using the thermometer above the necessary threshold renders it unusable unless you pop out the the Space Center to reset.

That was exactly my problem on a similar mission set on Minmus.

Now it is time to figure out how to get to Duna. And how to start up some bases. I thought transfers were tricky in Kerbal-space....

So hang on a sec, my current contract at Gilly has a temp scan required at above 6700m, and we are saying that the maximum altitude for a temp scan is 6000m?
