Whats some cool things to take to a planets surface?

I've built some cargo SSTOs which take things to planets' surfaces, but the old fuel canister is a bit boring. Anyone have an idea of what things I could bring (make 20 tons and less)?

I already now about him. In fact, I got inspired to make cargo SSTOs by him. But he just makes a mobile colonization (some cars too) which goes to Duna. I was thinking of something like a boat for Laythe or something.

Mini biome hoppers (something like an external command seat strapped to a small fuel tank and engine)

With resource mods, you could probably throw some small extraction and manufacturing facilities together for less than 20 tons.

True, they're useless and a waste of time, but then so is making a SSTO that misses "To Orbit" so much .... (ok, I know I'm my own joke. You want to fly planes around the system and that's fine and since it's "fun" that's what we get).

Small vehicles that can be carried by larger vehicles are always fun--it's always so majestic seeing the cargo bay doors slowly swing open to reveal a rover, a lander, a satellite, a tiny spaceplane, etc. The other day I spent an enjoyable few hours designing a three-kerbal lander that could fit inside a Mk3 cargo bay. After some experimentation I finally settled on three vertically stacked lander can cockpits, each of which had four radially attached FL-T100 fuel tanks (thank you, cubic octagonal struts). It's now running missions on Gilly while the mothership stays in orbit.

In all seriousness, I usually bring a train rover to the surface of a planet with the lander or I put one there beforehand. On worlds with atmospheres, I think it would be neat to take a plane there. An external jetpack also seems like an interesting idea.

I made this silly little "science outpost" with parts from KAS and stock that I can bring with and assemble manually anywhere. Its a whole contraption I build on top of a probe core that I drop on the ground, so it wont be debris and get deleted.

Its a fun set of goodies I have to figure out how to bring to various funky locations. Its been a challenge and quite fun. You can of course use any of the science instruments you attach to it, so I kind of pretend there is a reason to actually build it, lol. Gives something for the Engineer class to do too.

So far in .90 I've put it on the summits of K2 and Mt Kraken, the north poles of Kerbin and the Mun, the Island Airfield and on the Great Flats of Minmus.

I brought a debris field to the Mun

It was originally a large square landing pad with a can tower dropped by skycrane

...on top of a probe core that I drop on the ground, so it wont be debris and get deleted.

Little tip; you can change an object from debris to ship or something in the tracking center by clicking on the name in the info box. Of course you can't turn on the lights or do anything without the probe core, but it won't delete.

A base kit. 2 hitchhikers and a rover. I once set up a base like that on Duna and was so proud of myself I did nothing but stare at it for 2 hours thinking about how cool it was.

Pretty boring, eh? Not sure what else can be done, really. Im not very creative person at 2am. Good thing were getting resources in the nex update. I will be driving all over the place refuelling and flying on Duna and Laythe in search of pretty places.
