Something that makes the Tier 1 runway less laughably useless.

Not really a mod, but a quick workaround would be to adjust the difficulty sliders to give yourself enough extra cash at the start to upgrade to tier 2 right away and still have the regular starting funds.

I tend to just launch my planes from the Launchpad.

You can just launch your planes vertically.

Or you set your plane in the opposite direction of the runway. After you are down from the runway elevation, you can start with full throttle. Also most of the survey contracts/biomes are in that direction anyway, so it saves you the turn.

Use Firespitter. Early vehicles like biplane are fine with all those bumps.

Well, just like driving, watch your speed. Design planes that can take off as soon as possible. The more lift the better. Also mods that give higher legs helps for clearance with the bumps.

Or just a really biiiig rubber band with two sufficiently big enough trees...

But that sounds interesting, detachable wheels...We probably can do this with enough rover wheels and decouplers.
