Can the flag on my ship be different than the flag I plant?

Pretty simple question. I want the flag on the side of my command module to be different than the one I plant on some other world. Is this possible? Do Kerbals keep the flag they started with or the flag of the ship they were just in? If it was the former I could start them in a separate craft and load them into my rocket before launch. If not, I'm sad.

I've never tested it, so I don't know for sure, but I think they will use the flag from the last ship they were in before planting the flag.

Right, the flag that's assigned to the ship is the one that gets planted. However, if you're feeling brave, you can edit the persistence/quicksave to change the one you just planted to be something else. (quicksave, then edit the quicksave.sfs file, then quickload it).

Yeah, I always thought that when you have a contract from, say, RockoMax Conglomerate, to plant a flag on let's say Duna, it should be the Rockomax flag you plant, not whatever flag you're flying under. Which for me is usually a custom flag.

I've not tried this, but what would happen if you put flag A on ship 1 and flag B on ship 2, docked them together and then landed them. Could you get both flag A and B depending on which command pod you get out of?

I always do this with contract spacecraft. I put a space station in orbit of Kerbin for Probodobodyne, so their flag was on the side of it. It looks quite good when you assemble various modules together with different flags on them to build a larger station that's actually useful.

I believe it is based on the command pod's flag, if it is in fact the case of the kerbals taking the flag of their last ship.

Yes. My Laythe main base currently consists of two docked craft, each with its own flag. The flag a kerbal plants depends on which part of the ship he gets out of.
