Different speed settings

Recommended Posts

Is there a mod that is compatible with 0.90 that allows me to change M/S to KM/H or MPH? I have no idea what 200 M/S for example is suppose to be, I'd much rather see 1,225 KM/H and know that I am going supersonic.

-Thanks-

Supersonic in the KSP world does not correspond to real world. In addition, real world sound barrier speed is dependent on altitude.

I don't believe there is a mod for that at president.

Meters per second is a standard universal measurement. Just multiply by 360 and divide by 1000 if you want KM an hour. However, Kerbal time in the game is not Earth time unless you set that as a game default.

Use visuals, such as the air and heating effects to determine if you are supersonic or not. Keep in mind those speeds at lower altitude create a lot of drag at present.

For reference, the speed of sound on Earth is around 300m/s or so. Conversion between m/s and km/h is fairly simple: 1m/s = 3.6km/h :)

For general purposes, you can assume that your speed in km/h is about 3 1/2 times the displayed m/s speed. :D

...Oh it is? (Lord help me)

You can easily convert M/S into KM/H in your head. Just multiply by 3.6. 200 M/S = 720 KM/H. If you're worried that doing it manually would take a little too long, try this trick: X M/S • 3.6 = X • 3 + X • 0.6. This should take not but a second. No calculator required.

For MPH, it is a lot more complicated. The simplest thing you can do is to multiply your M/S to Ft/S. To do this, multiply by 3.281. After that, multiply your result by 60^2 to convert to Ft/H, then when all said and done, divide by 5280 in order to get your MPH.

Yes, this is the simplest way. You may want a calculator for this one.

Of course, this would be better than eating up precious memory space in your game unless you have no plans to get a lot of mods. In which case, by all means.

You're better off watching FAR's mach indicator, since I'm pretty sure that the speed of sound varies with altitude and body :)

It's about 300 m/s at Kerbin sea level, which is at least easy to work with in your head ^^

Wow. Aren't you just a ray of sunshine?

Yes, this is the simplest way. You may want a calculator for this one.

If one is in the middle of flying a plane, one does not always have the time to grab a calculator and run the math. Said pilot may be in the process of trying to regain control of a vehicle, or trying not to put it into a mountain, etc. In such cases, having a simple display to read airspeed from is much nicer.

Well thank you ^^ (Heh...)

If one is in the middle of regaining control of a vehicle, the only concern is that big numbers mean bad things.

I honestly can't figure out what's complicated about M/S though. It's probably the most basic unit of velocity you can have. And why would you want to know how much distance you would cover in an hour anyway? (Well, then again a lot of passenger planes use that...)

But still, it takes like 10 seconds, max... He's my friend. Max is a cool guy. You should meet him.

BTW I must have read your signature like 5 times and it is hilarious.
