Science Mode

Recommended Posts

Sometimes when I play KSP I just want to build cool rockets and stuff, and don't want to worry about contracts and funds. While sandbox is great for scratching that itch sometimes, I still quite like the "science mode" gameplay option because, while it takes the stress about making a launch as cheep as possible out of the equation, it still has a feeling that what I do is important to the progress of the space program as a whole, in a way that simple sandbox mode kind of gives up. In some ways it's better in that you don't get science from just completing contracts, you have to actually go out there and make scientific discoveries to unlock the tech tree. It gives the sense of achievement that you get with career mode without all of the funds related drawbacks (particularly with the feeling that you need to grind funds to upgrade KSC facilities). When I play in science mode now, though, one feature I really miss from full career mode is kerbal experience and levelling up. Can we have an option (or make it default) in "science mode" that kerbal experience, and the unlocking of abilities in the way that they do in career mode? At the moment I have a career save where I have set all the funds sliders to maximum to sort of give this kind of gameplay, but it would be nice to have it as an option, but it's not quite the same.

Yup - but that still requires you to perform contracts to make funds to progress through the game. Career mode is fine but it can also feel less like running a space program and more like completing a bunch of randomly strung together tasks. I'm playing a Science mode game at the moment, so that I can get away from that and play a slightly more directed game without having to care about how I pay for things. Having Science Mode as full-career-mode-but-without-contracts, would be perfect - for me. Others may beg to differ!

This. Also, sandbox needs a variety of Kerbals to hire, with varying exp levels (but no XP gain) so one can test the effects of differing skill in a no-"risk" environment. Want to see how these advanced rockets behave with a novice Pilot but a five-star Engineer? Sandbox.

I also want as a option in career mode if You had to pay a bit to hire kerbals with linking back to pincushionman with varying skills so a kerbal with 5 stars cost more than a novice kerbal

Ehh.. why not just integrate a training facility into the recruiting complex, to allow for buying xp? In Science and Sandbox (SaS) you´d start with 0xp for each kerbal, but training would be free in sandbox and cost some science in uh science.

Holding down alt-f12 for about 5 seconds in the KSC scene opens up a funds/science/rep cheat menu. You at add millions of funds to your bank in a few clicks. Also no inflation!

After opening the cheat menu, you have to hold Alt for 5 seconds to get the funds/science/rep buttons. It's a hidden menu within a hidden menu.
