  1. OK, please excuse the delays, my toddler became quite sick and gave us a good scare. Ground Stations So, one place to start building a wireless power system is to build a series of base stations. We choose the Ka microwave band on atmospheric planets because it has the lowest absorption. I have placed 6 stations around the equator and put one on each pole for a total of 8 stations at 40MW each. These base stations will need relays in orbit to provide electric charge throughout the entire planet. That will be the next phase. There is more detailed info on the Imgur album. BTW: I hate posting pics to this forum. It is about as unintuitive and convoluted as it can possibly be. I want my BB code standards.
  2. Ok I'm ready to start posting pics and descriptions of my power network. I will begin later today with the ground based towers. Then, Wednesday I will do a post for the LKO microwave power sats. Thursday will be the HKO infrared relays and Friday I will cover the HKO infrared power sats. This will cover the vast majority of Kerbin's SOI with many mega watts of power. It is probably overkill, but hey this is KSP right? If it's worth doing; it's worth over doing. I am however worried that all the recent updates will throw a curve ball in my designs somewhere, but I suppose we will burn that bridge when we cross it.
  3. I swear you go through mod revisions as fast or faster than I go through ship designs. Unfortunately I have been mandated to work all weekend, but have been getting closer to the next phase of my wireless power swarm. I'm sorry it took so long to get around to this next milestone; real life happens! However, be aware that I am working steadily on proper presentation, documentation, and instruction. I really was not happy with my previous rushed post; a revision is in order. While this will be done in more of a photo journalism styling, through Imgur, I wish to be as thorough as possible. Please be patient, this will be my primary project for the next week and will hopefully be completed and posted next weekend. Sincerely, -A.A.
  4. On average, after several iterations, HOURS! That is the biggest draw for me of this game, the building. It brings me back to my childhood and being surrounded by hundreds of Lego bricks in a pile on the floor. I could build whatever I wanted, whatever my imagination could conceive. Today, I still have those same Lego bricks and several times more that have been collected over the years. They will be handed down to my daughter as she get's older and will hopefully inspire her to also be a creative free thinking individual. BTW: Getting a payload to orbit isn't hard, preparing for the mission entirely is what takes time and planning.
  5. You do realize you have spent over 112 days of your life in KSP? Not that it is an entirely bad thing, but upon that realization I might spend a few days outside just to balance things out. I'm proud to say I don't use Steam so I can't quantify how much of my life has been wasted spent playing the game. Either way, the price was very reasonable and the return has been phenomenal. I must agree that I too would happily pay for any expansions, heck I'd probably pay for some of the mods I use and have through donation to many of those creators.
  6. IMHO, The aerodynamics and physics are reasonably well finished; minor tweaks and optimizations could probably be made, but all in all it's pretty good. I would like to see more development into the area of game modes, and or expansion of the career mode; maybe even an A.I. space program to compete against, e.i. space race KSP style. I have often thought how a more in-depth progression system would bring new life to career mode. It quickly gets pretty bland, take contract, build craft, complete contract, collect science, rinse repeat. Something more dynamic would be welcomed. The advent of a Kerbal population that needed to also be built-up and maintained might be one solution. IDK, I hardly have all the answers, I'm just thinking out loud.
  7. Fear Monger much? No one is going to prison over something like this. At most one may incur a fine for damages; if the complaining party can in fact sufficiently provide evidence of them. What will happen first is a cease and desist order from a lawyer. Failure to comply will likely bring more harsh action. I don't really agree with the mod pack idea myself; I've thought about doing it, but it is a whole lot of work. Consider that you are essentially taking on the responsibility of a librarian. You must take it upon yourself to ensure that all the mods in the pack are updated and playing well together, and be doing this continually. I have a degree in library science and I can tell you that doing this would/does take most of the enjoyment out of the game. Instead of actually playing a game you will find yourself working at checking mod compatibility and updates more often than you are completing contracts. I thought about it once, worked out what all would be required and decided it was too much work to put into a game. When I Kerbal I want to relax and have fun, not work. I get paid, quite well, to work; and that is the catch with the licensing you basically can't get paid for doing any of this.
  8. KSP 1.2.2 MKS 0.50.17 NO replication In fact RCS Sounds mod was in my GameData folder, even though I spent an hour looking through every mod back-up I have and cannot find it bundled with any of them and I'm sure I didn't download it - not my kind of mod - not in my back-up folder either. Still unsure why it would be spamming under these conditions, but removing it seems to have fixed the issue, and potentially a few more. Thanks for everyone's polite assistance.
  9. Yes, I read that, BUT I don't have RCS Sounds Mod installed. At least I don't think I do, unless it got snuck in or bundled with another mod. I will confirm when I get home from work. My understanding is that the RcsSounds Module is related to the stock game (as of 1.2.x), but I'm not sure why any MKS part w/o rcs functionality would be causing the error spamming. In fact the vessel in the pics does not have any rcs parts. That is why I posted my question here.
  10. That is well and good, and I'm happy to seek for answers elsewhere. However, my question still stands... "Has anyone else seen this happening under these conditions; i.e. MKS (or any) parts without RCS causing the RcsSounds ERROR spamming?"
  11. I am getting an RCSSounds Error spamming the log on the launchpad with a stock probe core and several MKS parts. See pics.. But not in orbit... So I can't sit on the launchpad for too long testing MKS configurations or I will crash to desktop. Anyone else seen this?
  12. 20 - 25 hours of game play accompanied by 50 - 60 hours of Scott Manley, and various other YouTube videos. That was when i started to feel like i had found a game i would be playing for years to come. Here I am are 3 years later and I always return to KSP. Had my stints with FO4, XCOM 2, ARMA 3, ect. but KSP is the only one still installed on my games drive. Honestly it is my go to when the manic creativity strikes. I can sit in the VAB for hours designing the perfect ___________. <-- insert craft type of your choice. That is of course when I have the time to do such things. DAMNIT! I've finally grown up, but it only took me 41 years.
  13. I believe this mod solves all your problems and allows you to basically create your own custom game mode. You're Welcome
  14. IDK about Herbalism. KSP might not be compatible with Herbalism for some people. As for Kerbalism and USI - MKS, they do not play well together as other posts have explained. I use USI-LS it's simple and can be setup to be very very strict. TAC works too but is too much micro managing for me tastes.
  15. Doh! I knew that.... In my updating I deleted anything USI, including LS and forgot to reinstall.... I feel like I total dufus, good thing it's my day off - I don't get paid to think today. Thanks for the assistance.
  16. OK let me clarify cause I'm not sure what I'm missing here. I just deleted USI Tools folder, downloaded MKS 0.15.17 and installed it all, including the USI Tools folder from the zip. No change for me. I can switch to "Next Cargo" on parts like Storage Modules I cannot switch to "Next Bay" on parts like the Expandable Habs What am I missing now?
  17. That would be a clear NO GO It is in the release notes. TAC-LS and USI-LS are the only supported life support mods I think. Kerbalism is not supported.
  18. I"m having an issue with some parts not allowing me to change the configuration in the VAB. i.e. the inflatable hab modules. They default to greenhouses, but I cannot switch them to living space. Am I just missing something here or is this the USI tools issue? I have removed and updated USI tools many times, current version 0.20.16 -- MKS 0.50.16.0 I feel like in all the updating I've done recently I may have messed something up.
  19. First of all I have to say I absolutely love this mod. It is clearly a staple, and KSP would not be the same without it. That being said there is one function that I have long considered to be missing.... Each Kerbal's inventory should be accessible from the Astronaut Complex, and once set that Kerbal will always have that inventory with them. This bypasses the need to set each inventory slot for each Kerbal at each launch (tedious). From a usability perspective this is the only change that desperately needs to be made. Otherwise this mod is essential for any advanced KSP game play.
  20. Dyson Swarm:Phase 1 [Project Code Name: Wardenclyffe] So, our Kerbals have entered the Thorium age. They have accomplished high output cheap energy. Along with it has come the rediscovery of a long lost technology developed by the famous Kesla himself. A means of wireless energy transmission through space. Naturally our Kerbals have decided that solar power isn't sufficient any longer and the need for a more reliable and consistent power network is eminent. I present to you only one of a vast number of possible solutions to this problem. I do not insist that my methods are the best or most well researched. In fact I am open to constructive criticism and input. So the creative minds at the KSC have devised a plan to build a series of towers around the planet they will each consist of four (4) 3.75m Molten Salt Reactors. Not quite the pinnacle of our fission technology but a reliable and versatile reactor. This tower will have a 3.75m deployable phase array microwave transmitter atop it tuned to the Ka bandwidth. This will send around 40MW [NFTE nerf] of energy into space, and the planetary atmosphere; don't worry out scientist assure us that any temperature increase will be nominal over background and only barely affect the winters on Kerbin. These ground stations needn't be littered about, 3-4 on the equator and 1 on each pole will suffice for our purposes. This is not unlike Earth, we live in a bubble of radio waves. Only our Kerbals have decided that instead of just downloading the lasted Crush Saga on their kPads wirelessly they can also charge them too! And, power their vehicles, and entire economy with free abundant wireless power. Welcome to the end of Capitalism. To accompany these ground based station a orbital network of satellites will be required. Each of these satellites will function as a relay; making the entire power network available planet wide and beyond. However, Bob Kerman has run the numbers and determined that our broadcast range will be vastly limited beyond low Kerbin orbit and has suggested a second layer of transmission satellites. TO BE CONTINUED... Watch this post for updates over the next 48 hours.
  21. Sounds like you might be using the wrong fuel type, try liquid nitrogen it has the best thrust/isp ratio. Also make sure you are using the same size nozzle as reactor. Finally, the more thermal power your reactor has the more thrust and ISP you will get from your nozzle. Try a more powerful reactor.
  22. First of all, join the club. It has been confusing me for over a year and Im just starting to wrap my head around it. Basically think of ut like this... To transmit power over distance wirelessly, we first generate a high power focused energy beam, point it at the target where it is collected as heat and converted into electricity. That is the basics of how this works. As far as calculating ranges and losses, I would go read the wikipedia article on "anteana apeture". There are some formulea in there that might be useful. IDK if FreeThinker is using them specifically, but I wouldnt be surprised. Either way the math still applies in the vague sense that you can determine if x apeture will be acceptable for y wavelength.
  23. Well you know Im gonna. What Kerbal doesn't want to brag that their home planet is surrounded by a swarm of controlled blackholes. Com'on really now... those are bragging rights worth having. Heck that doesn't even fall on the Kardishev scale. Count me in!
  24. The FELA really is the only game in town for high power transmission isnt it. None of the others can even come close. Even as little as 135MW would require a scaled up FELA. (With NFT installed) Is there a balance issue here? Does the reactor scaling with NFT have any affect on the beamed power systems?
