  1. From the article: "Space junk is becoming a real problem. "It’s a serious issue. There’s a common misconception that things in space are just kind of floating out there, moving slowly—and given videos of spacewalks and what we see in movies, that’s understandable. "But it’s wrong. There are thousands of satellites orbiting the Earth, moving at incredibly high speeds. Note the plural, “speeds”; not everything is traveling at the same speed or in the same direction. Two objects moving at 25,000 kph in different orbits can have a relative speed of several kilometers per second. At that velocity, a fleck of paint can have a catastrophic impact." _____ Cool! It's about time somebody decided to tidy up: LINK TO THE ARTICLE
  2. I just switched to stock scaled real solar system. If I were to install your mod, is it compatible with that one?
  3. Suggestion: how about simplifying scoring by making it strictly about fuel efficiency. Drop an unpropelled buoy in the water. Then see how far your vessel can travel away from it on the fuel you brought with you (make it your target). Then, when you run out, calculate how many kilometers you covered per unit of fuel (starting LF/O gets added together to determine total units of fuel used). How well would that work?
  4. If you're like me, you've had a multitude of vehicles explode at an awkward moment because you had too many things clipped into your command pod (or elsewhere). This inspired me to see if I could make a "stock warhead" by cramming a bunch of RTGs into a nosecone, then crashing it into something else. So far, the results are disappointing. Has anyone else experimented with trying to make things explode on purpose, using what you've learned from unintentional explosions? How did it go? Any success stories? Or instructions and plans (Especially plans. [Insert evil-grin emoji here]).
  5. People who know exactly what they're talking about tend to write instructions that expect the user to understand instructions they haven't got the experience to understand. That's why, when I was asked to write instructions for a secure data reporting system in 1995 (or '96) , I enlisted the help of the least tech-savvy guy in the shop. If he could understand the instructions I wrote, so could anyone else. Even then, it took about a week before I had instructions that were (nearly*) idiot-proof. * Never underestimate the ingenuity of an idiot. They can really surprise you.
  6. Let me get this straight then. Do the contents of the folder (8K, in this instance) go into the rss textures folder, or does it belong in Gamedata as its own folder? Still no clouds, but the center of the planet is measured in kilometers and not megameters, like before, so there is that.
  7. The file in question was already in place. Is it supposed to go in the RSS-Textures folder (where it is now) or is it supposed to go in its own folder in Gamedata?
  8. I've just now installed it, but Mom (she'll be 93 this August) broke her hip a few days ago, and it's my turn to visit. I'll see if that fixes things when I get home.
  9. It's working. Kerbin is gone and now I'm launching from Florida. Q: Are the following things normal or did I wrap things around the axle? It takes way more delta-vee to gain orbit (and orbital speeds are hyuje - about 7,000m's, plus or minus)! The visual enhancements aren't appearing, either. There's a sort of haze, but no clouds, and there are no lights on the night side of the planet. Suggestions about how to begin troubleshooting this will be gratefully entertained, but at least all my problems seem to involve missing visuals instead of glitchy behavior.
  10. Opened it with a different archiving program. NOW the install instructions make sense! We'll see how this goes.
  11. [Re-downloading from Spacedock, here: https://spacedock.info/mod/826/Stock Size Real Solar System] Are there any mods that I should be sure are not installed (for incompatibility or redundancy), before I begin attempting to install this one? Update: whatever I downloaded, it's the same exact thing I got the first time, and therefore, useless.
  12. If that's all that's necessary, what are all the other files NOT labeled SSRSS for? There are at least 140 other folders in the zip file. Are they not supposed to be part of this download?
  13. I took a look at it, but there are three separate SSRSS files in the zip folder, two of which appear to be duplicates of each other, and the instructions, while cleverly worded, do not clarify which files I actually need, and which identically-named folder contains the files I'm looking for. After several glances, I think I'll have to pass. I may want it, but I have no idea how to install it.
  14. I use CKAN for my mods, because I couldn't keep them straight without it. Having said that, if there are no plans to make this available through CKAN, I may need to request a "for boneheads" description of how to install it manually. If there are plans, never mind, but if there aren't someone give me a head's up, and I'll start trying to figure out how to install it without wrapping everything else around the axles.
  15. I check my staging the instant after I hit the "Go to launch" button. Not that I plan things that way, but that's how they always seem to turn out. It's a rare event, when I don't have to revert to the VAB at least two or three times. I blame advancing age.* * Not mine, but it's gotta be somebody's fault.
  16. He must have learned orbital mechanics by watching old episodes of Space Angel.
  17. Yeah, the possibility that a pod full of passengers might fall off unexpectedly would keep the insurance adjusters (and at least a few potential passengers) up, nights.
  18. Clip-Air: How pod planes could change travel forever Now I really need to learn how to make a flying wing!
  19. It seems to have fixed itself overnight.
  20. I reported to CKAN and they sent me here. I haven't been doing this long enough to tell the difference between being steered straight and getting the runaround. I suppose I'll just wait a few weeks to see if it gets straightened out?
  21. This is a cut-n-paste from a post I made in the CKAN thread. Someone there suggested I report it to you guys.
  22. Still tinkering with Twin Mustang designs, this time after consulting many different images. I still haven't got it sorted, but it looks as though I am getting closer. I used a procedural structural unit as the root part (shown in purple, here. The front end end pieces are procedural nose cones, in case the exposed node causes drag. (That can happen, right?) For the night-fighter version, I just expanded the root part to 1.25m diameter, blackened the nose cone (as a radome) and replaced the aft nosecone part with an angled (stock) nosecone part. This one's maneuverable, too. More here: http://s28.photobucket.com/user/SSgtBaloo/slideshow/5Jul2016
