Plan to use an unmanned rover for this mission. Tylo scares me.

Doing atmospheric science at Eve, found an weird bug, if I'm flying at the edge of the atmosphere, 89700-89900 meter both Ap and Pe increases and Ap takes me out of atmosphere.
I have to do small braking burns to keep me inside, I guess its some error in drag calculation.

You can also cheat getting atmospheric science in small biomes like shallow. Simply instrument collect for 1:55 over some other area, pause and continue to finish last seconds in small biome.

I mispoke.  It was Valentina that drew the short straw and know needs a ride home from orbit.  I didn't realize the Kerbals move fast when holding down the shift key so I walked all the way to the monument at a steady .7 m/s. Even at 4x speed that was no fun.  The run back to the lander was much better!

  2. Landed on Tylo to finished the monument mission. Never again. Pain in the you know what to land there. Had to walk 1.5km at 4x speed to get there from the lander and then walk back. Glad this one is over. Just gotta send a rescue craft to pick up Jeb from orbit of Tylo.

There are two markers on the map, body encounter and escape. And I think the circles on SOI go in different directions depending on that, one pulses outwards, the other inwards.

So I just checked this.  The bullseye markers are "backwards" in my mind. The circles that converge "inwards" shows you exit path out of the system while the circles that converge "outwards" so you entrance to the system.

I mean, shouldn't that be the other way around??

    But also

On Jool it's hardly an issue, SOI is so vast that changing the trajectory to the other side of the planet when you're on the edge is super cheap on fuel.

I'll have to look closer at the circles then.  I thought there were just kind of generic "bullseye" markers.

I didn't even think to try changing direction.  I know its always costly at most other planets but, you are right, Jool SOI is so big it would have worked.  Thanks!

  5. So I get my maneuver nodes setup for a Jool encounter, time warp to the SOI, and notice that I'm encountering Jool retrograde to the motion of the moons around it.  Is there a way to be able to tell what direction I am encountering a system?  The maneuver node system doesn't give you anything other than a blue line.  It doesn't show you your direction of travel relative to the system you are entering.

I think I just found my error. I did not take a "Science Jr." package with me. I thought the Kerbal on the ground was enough. This changes everything as I was getting good at EVA-ing from the ship to Gilly and back. Now I need to design a light lander for the job.

Thanks for the advice, though. I will likely need to save and restart anyways.

I’ve made it a habit to always take all science with me. Covers all the bases.

I wrote a bullet list on why all four of these points are incorrect, but it became clear to me when you accused it of having the "same KSC layout" you're just doing this for the sake of it. A completely different KSC is literally one of the first things new players will notice, and if someone claims it's the same, I have no reason to believe they've actually even played KSP 2. It's an objective fact that a top-down view of KSP 2's KSC model will not match up with a top-down view of KSP 1's KSC model.

I didn't say it was a brick for brick copy of KSC from KSP1 to 2. But the general gist of gameplay is the same except they dumbed it down by removing funds.

There is no innovation at all from Ksp 1 to 2. Track missions, do science,  unlock parts. All the same thing between both games.

That latter part is a massive [citation needed].

Not the person you replied to but I also feel this way. I mean, it’s the exact same planets, same parts, same dV map, same KSC layout, etc… They basically took some graphical mods and put them into an official package and called it KSP2.

I must be some kind of super human then because I've done plenty interplanetary missions without it.  Not saying a manual editor wouldn't be helpful though.

Then you are a much better player than I.  There is no way I could fine tune interplanetary encounters with the stock maneuver node "tool".  I hesitate to call it a "tool" because it isn't very helpful.  It's more of a hindrance.

  10. I don't know what "rumors" we are talking about, but you'd have to be blind to think KSP2 isn't somewhat broken in its current form.  Without mods, (the maneuver node mod specifically) interplanetary travel is beyond difficult.  Like almost impossible.

  11. It happened to me yesterday too and I don't have K2 installed.  As I was getting closer to my target, I was wondering why my target icon on the Navball kept moving around funky.  As I got within 100m of the craft I could see it spinning and the navball target was going around and around the nav ball.  Had to reload a save, took control of the vessel that was previously spinning, and made sure that SAS lock was on. That seemed to stop it from spinning thereafter.

It was really hard to build a lander that used chemical rockets to get the 4,500 dV - 5,000 dV needed to execute a landing and take off on Tylo. It ended up being a very heavy, single use vessel.

Going back to Tylo, I'm doing this instead:

      Reveal hidden contents

Use a swerv as the lander engine to create an SSTO lander with 6k dV

That's an excellent idea.  I just unlocked that node in R&D so I will play around with it.

    I guess I won't shelve KSP2 just yet.

Jool mission has an dedicated tanker.

Yup.  I initially was going for the "Find the monument on Tylo" mission but realized real quick I lacked the proper rockets (need more science) to get a kerbal there and back in one trip.  This is definitely going to be a two craft mission when I finally get around to doing it.

  14. Just finished the "plant flag on Pol" mission.  Man, what a buggy mess it is trying to get to Pol.  First off, I'd say it's impossible to do this mission without the maneuver node mod.   I'm just wondering if the designers actually play the game with the stock maneuver node tool.  It's just terrible. I was able to use a gravity assist from Tylo to get a Jool capture.  However, the game doesn't show future orbits very well in the Jool system.   After the Tylo encounter, I was in a Jool orbit but then about halfway through the orbit a Laythe encounter came out of nowhere.  This encounter was not shown at all until Laythe was very close to my craft.  So WTH is up with that?! Then I finally transferred to Pol and landed.  I time warped a bit on Pol and my craft fell through the surface!  Had to re-load a quick save and then not use time warp.

I think I'm going to have to shelve KSP2 for a bit.  Game is pretty to look at, but the bugs are still pretty bad.

  15. So I've been messing around with trying to get an encounter in orbit between two crafts for the better part of a few hours.  What I'm finding, is that its easy to use the mod to tweak the encounter by advancing the orbit several times and playing with the settings.  However, when I go to hit the "warp to maneuver" button on the screen, the encounter on the map views changes from what I had setup before I hit the "warp to maneuver" button.  So instead of being with a few hundred meters from my target with a close relative velocity that I painstakingly setup, now I'm back to several hundred kilometers away as the map encounter icons read.

I am skipping like 15+ orbits to setup the encounter so I don't know if that has something to do with it or not.

Edit: So I just figured it out.  My PE is actually lower than what the orbit details are telling me.  Somehow, my PE is almost 1km lower.  That is the issue and it's throwing off the math.  Looks like orbital decay still exists.

  16. We keep talking about “polish” but they have game breaking bugs  that need tending to before new content is pushed out. I’d say docking issues, orbital decay, parachute issues, all need correction before any new content is developed. And these are only just three items. I’m Sure there are even more I havent discovered.

I sent two separate rescue missions.

My primary mission didn't have enough TWR to safely land so it stayed in orbit.

My first rescue mission used far more fuel than I was expecting to land so stranded him on the surface.

My second rescue mission actually got him back to orbit and then I hand plenty of fuel between the three return crafts that I had now in Tylo orbit to easily get home.

I'm working on this mission now.  Using f8 cheat menu to teleport me to Tylo so I can test lander design.  It's a PITA for sure but fun as well.

I can already tell this is a two craft mission.  One to push the lander there and then another craft to rendezvous and pick them up to return them to Kerbin.

  18. My concern is that bugs need to have priority at this point.  Parachutes not deploying, VAB dV sillyness with staging, maneuver lines disappearing, etc... all need to be fixed before they push new content.  Coming from KSP1, I had a good handle on what I was doing even with the bugs in KSP2. But if I was a new player, I would have put in for a refund pretty quickly.

I must be dense. I still dont get bell notifications for content (threads) I’m following when a new post appears. I have to hit the “unread threads” at the top to browse all the new stuff that was posted since I was last here. I  only get bell notifications if someone liked my post or quoted me.

    Strange.
