Auto-Autostrut? and other questions.

I wasn't paying attention when 1.2 came out with the autostrut and Rigid Attach features so I don't know much about it.

1. Are there any disadvantages to using Autostrut or Rigid Attach?

2. If there are no major disadvantages, can I get it to default to on without having to push the button on each part?

3. What is the difference in gameplay among the various Autostrut modes?

1. Somewhat; Too many autostruts can lead to phantom forces that cause the ship to wobble. Too much rigid attachment can make you ship brittle, and prone to snapping instead of bending.

2. Not that I've found, but I don't think you'd want to.

3. The auto strut modes can be set per part, and it just changes what it auto struts too, you can see the connections being made via the orange lines.

1b. Autostrut (heavier part or root part)  may change in flight.  The sudden change of the forces can result in Rapid Unplanned Disassemble. 

2. The mod Editor Extensions have mass-struting features.  But given the risk of excessive autostrut I prefer to let it alone.  Given its a tweakable I suspect it's possible to set it to be on by default with a ModuleManeger patch.  But, again because of risk of excessive autostrut....

The Kerbal Joint Reinforcement mod simply does auto-autostrutting of all parts to their grandparent part, which seems to be very safe. So if you want that feature, use that mod.

Are you sure about that?  According to the OP, it does a lot, and has been around since before autostrutting was a thing:
