@eagle92lightning - there's a red, a green and a blue one on the bottom of the lander, which: A. looks pretty, and; B. acts as a kind of ground proximity indicator during landing. Higher up, the light mixes to produce white, but as you get closer to the ground the light separates into its constituent elements.

I have a concept for a lander in my head that I may work on soon, or that might inspire someone else. One design problem I've run into is that it can be hard to design a lander that has a rover smoothly integrated into it. My concept is for a lander roughly the shape of a cube, using the white rover bodies that I'm so fond of, that has a rover seamlessly integrated as part of the body on one of the sides. The wheels will be attached in such a way that they face inward so they are invisible from the outside.

Upon landing, the rover will be decoupled (or undocked), leaving one side of the lander either completely missing or open. I may create a mockup before I attempt this.

In ASCII, it would look like this

Landed:

[|]

/ \

Rover decoupled:

[|

/ \ _

You'll have to use your imagination.

My attempt at miniaturizing the J-Class LM:

Earlier version with charging module and rover still attached:

oh I forget something. I want my kerbals back so how should I go about getting the Lander back into orbit?

The lander needs to be even bigger than a rocket you would use to get into orbit of kerbin. Due to the thick atmosphere you will also need to chose your engines carefully

my plan was a sls Orion rocket block 1. Highly modified of course. I think I might be able to get a Lander big enough on it.

You basically need to land something with even more fuel than the sls Orion on the surface unfortunately. It is possible in one launch but very difficult. I look forward to seeing your creation. If you use the mod kerbal engineer you will need about 6000m/s of delta v I think.

I like mech Jeb better but only for data

It does the same job. You may want to look at some of the other creations on the forum for inspiration

I know I want an Apollo style Lander.

This is a Corvus Cargo Lander carrying a Duna ascent vehicle and ISRU equipment for a Constellation-style mission to Duna. The Corvus vehicle is very versatile, capable of carrying just about any cargo that can fit in its profile (provided that the mass is balanced well), and landing on any atmospheric world with atmospheric pressure up to that of Kerbin.

Here is my single launch manned Mars Duna mission.

Apollo inspired in that I had to put the lander right side up, then once in orbit separate and dock it back upside down. Uses an unmanned nuclear tug/fuel tank to get it to Duna orbit.

I accidentally used an LF+O for the top cone section of the tank, so I decided to refuel the lander and attempt an Ike landing too. Just barely managed to get it up into a very low orbit before running out - Forgot to include a Mechjeb on the tug, so it took a good hour to get the sluggish tug to rescue them and dock.

But it ended up getting so much science that it unlocked everything. (5821 research with one mission - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=518987386)

Is moded because the fuel tanks on the tug look like they are procedural parts.

Yes, I think it was Interstellar Fuel Switch and maybe something else, it was a while ago. I used it as I only needed LF for the nuclear tug. Volume wise it's the same as a normal LF+O tank, just double LF and no O.

It also uses Infernal Robotics - I planned to use the powered hinges on the nuclear nacelles to be able to turn them prograde/retrograde without turning the whole ship around - but I didn't actually use it at all.

Yes, it's Steam.

I think it's off topic here, but it's simple, just download the mod and extract it into the install folder. The Steam install folder might be a bit tricky to find at first, other than that just extract/copy to the correct folder. There are topics on it:

Fun necro thread, it's cool to see the evolution in one place.

I spend a lot of time with tiny pocket landers:

r7yxtBs.jpg

This one carries a full science payload, 3000m/s of dV, Mun capable, and stows in a single-space Mk3 cargo bay with tons of room to spare.  Add a couple drogues and you can do Duna as well.  On harder career settings though, you'll need to wait for an overhead pass by a remote control point to fly it with a scientist aboard.

Is there a link for this lander.
