[1.12.X] Tantares - Stockalike Soyuz and MIR [26.0][18.12.2023][Soyuz Revamp Again]

This pic from the front page clearly shows a cupola on the orbital module. Hmmm...looking closely it might be something else clipped into the OM.

http://i.imgur.com/pQIB6cq.png

I took this shot, and made the craft, and there is no "cupola" part being used in that craft file. Can you draw a circle on the part you're talking about? The OM on that Soyuz is just the 0.9375m OM with a 0.9375m docking probe. There are two KURS antennae, a Vostok and LK antenna on the nadir side, and on the left side, a battery pack with Beale's docking light boom clipped into it. I have suspicion you're talking about the battery pack and docking light. I don't know what the Russians actually call that little window. Guess you could call it a cupola if you wanted to.

That's it!!! - been driving me nuts trying to figure out what that part was!

Glad I could help! I guess you could call it the docking window. That's technically what it is. You can either use the docking light boom, and clip it behind the docking port to stick just in front of the battery pack, or you can scale down a stock light, and clip it in there. With the editor tools, you can do just about anything.

Also, that's one of the parts I'm beginning work on, so stay tuned.

Interesting concept of how to do it, but unfortunately it would limit it to be used by one decoupler only (specially designed for the depth of the recess).

I don't suppose you couldn't just cut the engine in half about 2/3 the way up and make the top part solely a separator that stays attached to the engine like with the first stage decoupler for your proton?

Buuuuut, I'm not so sure for a few reasons:

  • I'm a little crazy for the tapered engine, the combined engine decoupler is an awful compromise and does cause problems (KER significantly) - but I think it is integral to the look (Any suggestions for tapered engine and separate decoupler I welcome very much).
  • Titan II also, I would really love to take an attempt of - has a very unique appearance and will be fun to texture.

In regards to the engine/decoupler for gemini - consider having a small, THIN, gemini-centric heatshield part with the built-in decoupler like your other heat shields have. It might simplify things a bit. Also, looking forward to the gemini being black.

In regards to various Titan II comments - having a 2.5m dual-bell engine (that doesn't look like it's from an Atlas) would make things pretty easy, even using existing stock tanks or even the proton tanks.

In regards to the "big-g" part you teased : That would be a highly welcomed addition! It would make a nice visually-appropriate 1.875-2.5m size adapter for the gemini. Consider adding a door onto it so it could be used to store an extra kerbal or three the way the IRL "big-g" was supposed to. :) It would just be BEGGING to be sent up with the stock science lab :

I suppose I should quit "loafing" and get back to work, then! :D

Vai vai!

That's how the real Gemini does it, you can see this way of doing things if you take a look at FASA.

The problem with this, though it would be a nice idea - the diameter of where the decoupler meets the engine, you have a strange diameter - I'd like to avoid adding (any more) new diameters.

Mmm... This could work - if it is thin enough, the profile of the craft may not be damaged.

I will employ some modelling experiments

Big-G may be useful! I'm just not sure how to work a door into it. It could be a KIS trunk, but er... That's not really useful for some people aside from being an adapter.

I am now trying to do the Vostok Kick-Stage.

Very tiny texture, but end result is a quite plain engine, I can maybe add more greeble.

A door could be as simplistic as a visual texture-only rectangle just below the existing gemini door on the outside. (Similar to what you did with earlier versions of the soyuz orbital module that had the square hatches)

The only reason I even suggest a door is to have a clickable "hatch" for in-flight crew transfers, a place for kerbals to spawn if sent EVA, and so on - KSP gameplay centric user interface needs.

If there was some way to "link" the part to the gemini capsule - or to have it augment the gemini with extra seats when it was attached - this would be a non-issue, but sadly nothing like that is implemented in KSP yet.

But even if it has no crew capacity, please for the love of yeast include that part you teased a few pages ago in the next release :) It would be perfect to use as a big-g (even without extra crew members) to add battery capacity, more monoprop, etc.

Simply make a Gemini-style hatch so it is directly below capsule's hatch. Not very realistic, but it would be the best solution, gameplay-wise.

Valentina wanted new fuzzy dice for the Soyuz before flying it again, so we opted for something a little more adventurous.

Nice!

Those Grid-Fins look a little hazardous though!

Huh... That was quite easy actually.

I feel silly for getting stuck on the door before now.

Only is needed to add the handle.

I am sending you the highest of fives for that big-g !

Can't wait!

(The only catch will be to make sure the part for gemini's parachute has enough ... parachute-ness ... to safely land the gemini with the extra attachment.)

The Big G and vostok upper stage both look nice!

That Vostok had better be based on accurate dimensions/orthographic sketches this time. Or else...

Hey, we're three weeks out from New Horizon's Pluto flyby! Hurry up and get that high gain dish out, I need it for a Pluto flyby mission!

Beale, I love the Big G design, it looks gorgeous, and some more U.S stuff to balance out the USSR stuff is always nice.

(Never stop with the USSR stuff.)

This may be a common question, but is there a reason why Tantares does not use Raster's? Too much work needed to do, doesn't fit the feel? I know this is probably a common question asked of you.

Not everyone uses RPM, and Beale don't want to include any dependencies.

Besides, there was a config for RPM bundled with Tantares, I guess it's wildly obsolete now.

I know he has Scatterer, he might (?) have planetshine, although I don't know what the cloud mod is. EVE?

Ooh, that's a different design than my Mir 2. Which concept is it?

It's the concept dated somewhere around 1990 I posted earlier:

yQXcKPsHFmo.jpg

The small module, it looks like it's from another project of Mir-2, there were several variants developed (one of which, #4, became Rassvet/Pirs/Poisk type), I used variant #1 as a mediocre one:

KJX37nBYHcY.jpg

1 - 2.9m module on a discardable Progress service module, launcher is Zenith

2 - 2.9m module with an attached Progress SM, Zenith launcher

3 - 2.9m module, with a brand new tug/upper stage attached on top (!) of the module. Launchers: Zenith and... Ariane-5! Quite a surprise, actually

4 - 2.4?m module on a discardable Progress SM, launched by Soyuz rocket

5 - enlarged (2.9m) module on a Progress SM, Soyuz launcher

6 - even larger module, which uses fairings as walls, while the docking accessories are covered with a small nose cone

Sorry for going off topic, mind me asking what mods you're using in the last three shots, Kerbin looks awesome!

Just going to throw a couple of random, but apropos, thoughts out onto the table:

The vostok redux looks absolutely amazing. The existing vostok is really the only thing in the tantares pack that I didn't really like, and it was mostly due to the decoupler for the capsule. The prototype screenshots youve posted look incredible and I can't wait to try them out.

The "big-g", is one of only three things I'm missing to release a "nasa total conversion" equivalent to my "soviet space program total conversion" mod. The other two are a two-bell 2.5m engine to use as a titan II , and the third is something to use as the "Langley" lunar lander, a light 1-man lander that was designed as a possible companion to a lunar gemini mission. If the big-g is released, a two-bell engine can be made without looking too horrible from stock parts or added to tantaresLV, and I can find a good way to make the langley out of the command-chair and have it fit in the tantares TKS 1.875m cargo bay (so far, it's been incredibly difficult), I'll be able to get that nasa total conversion released and have it ONLY depend on tantares/tantaresLV and omsk (for the redstone and early atlas) instead of needing to pull in fasa.

I guess what I'm getting at is - a huge enormous "thank you" , as your incredible talent and work on this mod not only stands out in it's own right, but it enables others in the community to release related projects.

Again - the highest of fives.
