Nothing to figure out, if they can travel out of their system then they have Quantum Mechanics, and if they have quantum mechanics they can do quantum encryption. The chinese have announced they are creating a new state communication system based on quantum encryption and they only managed to place a half-functional rover on the moon. All you need to do to have FTL communication is to know what your communication needs are in advanced and carry a good supply of entangled particles with you, you don't even need to have particles for every where, just for a single communication base (since it is FTL you don't care where) and communicate with that base a predefined periodic intervals, they then can send information to its final destination, sort of like a phone company. BTW, humans are an English term that has meaning in one of homo sapiens 5000 languages. Global Official designation is scientific-latin Homo sapiens sapiens. If they were sophisticated enough to know we had an English Language they should also know we had biological systematics for defining biotypes and that at least some humans were self-aware enough to know that they were animals falling into the catagories Archea; Eukaryota; Opisthokonta; Metazoa; Eumetazoa; Bilateria; Deuterostomia; Chordata; Craniata; Vertebrata; Gnathostomata; Teleostomi; Euteleostomi; Sarcopterygii; Dipnotetrapodomorpha; Tetrapoda; Amniota; Mammalia; Theria; Eutheria; Boreoeutheria; Euarchontoglires; Primates; Haplorrhini; Simiiformes; Catarrhini; Hominoidea; Hominidae; Homininae; Homo sapiens [sapiens] And more than likely the aliens have their own version of systematics in which they refer to us by other names such as annoyingly oblivious radio-frequency polluters, easily addicted electronic device users, or highly inadequate self-grandizing space fearers (following our walk away from satellite exploratioon after apollo 17), Vertical phototrophic destroyers, irrational apex predator killers, or something of that variety.

Max Q is dependent on areodynamics approaching the speed of sound. If the Rocket has a pointy nose and fusiform shape the it prolly can, if it has a ball shape nose then it prolly can't.

You mean the answer to the fermi paradox is that all aliens create space games with odd colored men, then chat rooms where people argue incessantly why there are no aliens instead of building ships that can explore their galaxy? i can see that with some of the sprites here, but at least a few have to work and earn a living, maybe one or two at NASA.

That's what I thought the Kraken was before I learned it was an Octopus. They should call it the Krakenfodder1 that way if it disappears or disentegrates we could create an Urban myth to explain why. You could definietely lean out the astronaut core with a name like that.

I wan't thinking about lithium graphene so much, i was thinking in terns of layering other metal molecules on top. Simple lead cannot form such a thin monolayer, and as a conductor lead is a very poor choice in space, particularly compared with lithium and carbon. But to the point, the 4n + 2 orbital can be accessed at several points along the graphene sheet edge so it can be thin and wide and in that context a monolayer could conduct an infinite number of amps. if you could take a 20 guage wire and widen it 40 times and flatten it 100000 times you could spread out the ends to make an excellent high amperage contact, your transformer can have 2500 times the number of windings which means you could turn a 10x stepup thnsformer and turn it into a 25000x step up transformer. Or alternatively create a significantly stronger electro magnet. The 7 degree is not high, but graphene has benn on the edge of superconductivity, its good to see someone has cross the line and I expect more progress to be made.

39 days to Mars possible now with nuclear-powered VASIMR.
PB666 replied to Exoscientist's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The problem with VASIMR, IIRC, is the RF generators (2) and containment of RF heat. Sure you can get the RF generators 'into' high conductivity metals and the like, sort of like an RF laser, but the problem is that RF is heat once it is absorbed by something afterall that is how it moves the ions in the drive. If they can provide perfect containment of RF and ions inside of the acceleration chamber, then they can get rid of the heat as it is ejected completely out the back as EM drive would with ion velocity increases. I read something the other day and posted it in questions that don't deserve that one cannot precisely control the frequency polarity and direction of light because of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The manage to make very green light by quantum scattering it off of atoms. Venus is not a smart choice if you are having a problem keeping things cool, you have to add mass to protect from the sunlight. Of they can cut down the waste heat problem, they need less power, if they need less power then they may be able to avoid the nuclear stuff. -
The thing about graphene is that its relatively easy to make and doesn't require any rare metals. Since its starts out as very conductive and very young I would assume that you will see the maximum operational temperature rise. The other thing is that you can stack them in layers of about 3A, not withsanding the radius of the lithium so that you can literally stack superconducting being critical lets say 20A per layer that is roughly 500,000 widings per millimeter, think about what kind of transformer or supermagnet you could make in a fairly small space.

Its funny that in this group we chat alot about things that have never happened in recorded history and most likely will never happen. Not picking on this exactly, but trying to find reasons why all but obvious aliens don't talk to us ponders on the absurb. Ok, so if aliens decided to go silent they would communicate using entangled particles, and due to quantum mechanics we no know that this a completely private way to communicate. There, we are surrounded by cloaked aliens whispering out of earshot. They see you endulging in that double mocha latte on your sick day sitting by the pool. Of course after we build that super great space port on the moon, they will take over!

I think they are confusing differential velocity with differential rotation. There is one physical way to slow down using the target as the means, friction. If the target has an atmosphere you can aerobrake, it does not you have to slam into it. For most analysis the intercept velocity will be in the km/sec range which means that friction is striking the target like a surface to air missile, not a good idea for landing. SO obviously this is not what they are talking about. What they are talking about is this. The problem with landing on a comet is this, the surface is always moving, there is no non-rotational reference frame in which a comet is not moving, moving surface makes landing hard. If you tether a rotating asteroid and real in, the ship will move faster, and just like a rock climber on a cliff, will slam into the wall elsewhere as soon as tension on the tether starts to decrease. But the rotation creates centripetal force and if the ship lets out line then the ship is propelled the opposite direction relative to the original rotation, and if friction is placed on the line itself (such as a clutch on a trany) the energy will be released as heat, if you did this over many areas on an asteroid you could slow down its rotation Erotation ------> hv. This technique I have actually used in fishing. So for example if a fish is caught and you real very quickly toward the boat, you are pulling the fishes head toward you but his thrust, if he desires is the easier in your direction, which means that once he is getting close to you it can thrust away at a much higher velocity and snap the line or tangle it in the propellar. The way to stop this is to lead a heavy fish along a tangent allowing the fish to pull away from you with a drag that is about maybe 1/2 to 3/4ths the maximum force that you can apply. In addition you constantly try to keep the rod at 90' up relative to the line, this has two positive benefits, it increases the shock absorbing capacity of the rod and pulls the fish off the bottom, and action most fish will try to counter naturally by pushing down and using the bottom, shallows or obstacles to gain thrust. By reeling and letting him pull you are dissipating some of your energy against the clutch, but when he thrusts he is dissipating his energy, the fish then stays in a range of radius from the boat moving at small angles relative to the perpindicular of the line. You would think that you are losing energy because you are constantly reeling, but the fish, when it thrusts applies thrust against you at an oblique angle, because you keep is head moving obliquely toward you and hes trying to curl his head away, the result is when he thrust his head moves from obliquely toward to obliquely away before he has lost to much thrust traveling away and he relaxes bringing his head back. So only some of this energy is going against the clutch, and the rest is wasted trying to turn, creating angular drag against his body. Eventually the fish cannot supply enough oxygen to his muscles to sustain that level of heat and he will start gravitating to you at a much lower speed. They always keep one burst of speed close to the boat. Many fish, for example bill fish are often dead by the time you get them to the boat, in that last burst to get away, they frequently deplete their heart of sufficient oxygen and die, muscles cramp up immediately, like pulling a fish out of the fridge. On some catch and release fish I have actually had to flush oxygen across the gills and palpitate them gently to get them back to life. (For me the really big fish are a nuisance, I prefer pound size fish). To do this right in space you would have to do this in a conic section, that is essentially flat on one side (not so different from fishing because you want to steer the fish away from the bow or props). You would have to repeately move in against the line without tension, thrust to tense, and then reel out or side to side basically converting rotational energy into heat. The problem is that to slow down rotation, which i think mining an asteroid this is a good thing, you would need to constantly jerk the tethers hold fast, as we know asteroids don't take well to this, and the holdfast would loosen; the same think happens in fishing, you can tear the hook from the fishes mouth because by constant back and forth jerking the hole will widen and the counter point on the hook will have enough space to free itself (one reason why the rod is always held up and perpindicular to the line). On an asteroid no such hold will work, the only way to prevent this is to is to land an auger on the asteroid and twist it deep into the asteroid and then cement the transit to the surface with a plate with a plane that is perpindicular to the rotation vector. On a comet like 67P the roid would probably break in 2. It would have to be tethered from both long ends. And in any case doing this on one side and not the other will constantly shift the center of rotation and destabilize the asteroid.

Meteorologist didn't name it, I was named by fisherman along the Peruvian coast. Its a matter of perspective, if you go back to early-biblical times the world was 500 miles in any direction. Alexander the great extended longditude from Spain to the Indus river, and paid a heavy price doing that. It wasn't until Magellan that the world becomes our world (missing Australia, Antarctica, etc), Magellan also payed a heavy price doing that. So to the fishermen on the Peruvian coast all they see is a phenomena that affects their fish and guano production, and any affects elsewhere cannot be socially tied, so they name it in accord to what is familiar to them. And so meteorologist the name is ENSO, with also is rather eurocentric, because the phenomena is technically isoequitorial. If it will make Tex_NL feel better he can change the acronym to Equitorial, Northern and Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
PB666 replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Are you traveling away from, toward or tangential to the star. The question should be if a ship is traveling the same speed as the stellar wind, how fast would it need to go would be dependent on the density of plasma within the wind. On the bright side you don't have to generate plasma, on the not so bright side you may have to slingshot close to the star to get enough forward momentum to escape, and you would have to accelerate at break neck speeds. The drive is not so speculative as a warp drive, but much more speculative than anything planned and the problem is that you either need a very efficient nuclear reaction on a scale that has not been created in any laboratory or you have to find away to do tetraproton fusion, which is, as far as I know impossible in a single step. -
Yet. Nuclear technology has not trickled through every despotic regime yet. Although personally the atomic threat has been overplayed, ISIS is not worried about the nuclear threat, but if they could play that threat on others I'msure they would. The biggest fear should be luddites, remember the unibomber, use technology to destroy all technology and there enforcing ones lifestyle on others. If you respect the technology you are less likely to use it in a way that brings disrespect. I think that is a critical reason why Truman took the bombs control from the Army. There are some technologies that simply work better in a threat/respect posture. I don't think this would assess differently in other cultures-worlds, but it is somewhat fortunate that the anti-autocratic anti-classic emperialism US got the weapon before the Fascist in Europe did.

California is apparently at the end of a decadal drought, although we have had a relatively wet summer. sporadically wet. I expect our winter will be wet and messy. The Santa Anna winds blow in moisture off the pacific, but they also blow in a hell of alot of hot dry wind in spots that could set the whole southern part of Cali on fire. And then the is coastln erosion, during the last big el-Nino we were doing flight sim real weather out of John Wayne air port just south of los angeles, it was a kick, landing 737s on one wheel block and trying to stop the plane with thrust spoilers only.

In that context how do you explain post traumatic stress disorder. I don't think the problem is cushy lives, I think we are surrounded by fear mongering media and politicians. I get a great deal of peace just by carefully selecting the channels on my digitsl TV. The other problem is people should have campfire time out before sleepy time, lights down low, lots of orange light and turn off the friggen media.

I don't really want to reply to this in this thread cause I was hoping to give it a clean start. Agree 100% with the matter equivilant aspect. However what you said about the pressure tensor does not jive with the paper i presented yesteday. There are either two things happening, Dark Energy is very weak acting between particles in our galaxy, or Einstien was correct in his assessment of a pressure constant, but the pressure only applies to mass. Having thought about this a bit, if there is a pressure constant that is independent of local energy density (mass if you are stuck on a planet), and it would appear that dark energy is more powerful than Einstiens constant, Then there is a local problem. The vector is supposed to be in th meV range, which means it has a field intensity that we can measure. If that is true, and I start assembling lead balls in space the attraction to those balls And i carefully measure th mass going into the balls then when I start measuring attractions, the calculated G should be smaller for small objects but quickly plateau at the observed constant as ball size increased, because DEF would be proportionally smaller compared to mu, if the constant was space-time dependent. The problem is that the latest gravity experiments show a fluctuation in G, but its in the 10-6/-7 range, much smaller than it should be to explain Dark energy. The latest experiment shows no deviation in acceleration down to the um/sec2 range with an attractive differential. So dark energy is spreading things apart only in a mass dependent manner, with no dependency on space at all, a mass-time dependency. This means that the cosmological constant cannot be constant across space-time because mass is not consistent across space-time. Therefore it would appear that the press release (key word being appear) that dark energy is either not acting between particles in our galaxy, but between galaxies or inserting my alternative, interacting only with mass-time but in fact appears to be inflating space time, lol. The other possibilty is that dark energy preferentially interacts with dark energy tensor, and matter is reflected in its gravitation interaction with the energy tensor. This creates another set of problems in galactic shape distortions and in particular favors dark energy tensor accelerating away from mass to the edge of the inflaton. The only way that doesnt happen is if the tensor is a field that travels at Close to C, dumping small bits of momentum to small particles it passes until it returns to the rest state. Also not supportable. Thus it would appear that dark energy remains elusive, but I don't see how we can assess the pressure tensor in our galaxy and distinguish it from G if dark energy is acting on mass-time dependency, it would be the same as saying 5 billion years ago G was much higher and suddenly fell, which entirely changes what a type 1a supernova is. So I have to bias that it is not acting between matter in our galaxy, it can only spread vacuum space, its inflation. -
