Career mode games have parts limits... idk how I will fit in all this extra stuff you guys want added like life support, flaps, spoilers, other cool mods. Think of the kittens, think of the children! More seriously, I think life support, while a neat idea that adds more authenticity... is not central to the core game of rockets, orbits, moon landings, and explosions. I'm happy to let that remain an external mod.

A possible 1 m/s burn... on some KSP craft, I can't mash keys fast enough, to cut a maneuver that fine

1.0 development split!
basic.syntax replied to quasarrgames's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
An extra public beta before 1.0 seems unlikely. HarvesteR wrote about the problem of frequent public releases, before the .21 update came out. -
Which month do you think KSP Version 1.0 will be released?
basic.syntax replied to Gus's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The Dawn space probe comes into orbit of the dwarf planet Ceres, in March. (Though the pictures won't be at their best, until later in the year.) A real-space news "coincidental release" might be good for KSP. Nonetheless, April seems more likely, given Maxmaps' squadcast comments. -

Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?
basic.syntax replied to hoojiwana's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I forgot where I saw it, but, I recall a mention that they are aware the science system is... all over the place. When I first started, it made no sense, until like others are saying... forums and The Internet fills you in. 'Something' is planned. I think. I hope for a new Science UI, to bring together all the sciencey things your craft (or EVA character) can do at the moment. -

You can also make a complete separate copy of the KSP folder tree, Steam only updates what it finds under ..\steamapps\common. -
Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?

1.0 is more than 2 months away. Maxmaps said this, in his latest Squadcast. Starting at 11:30 into the stream - (my transcript. link to video, and Much more stuff that he talked about, is in the link above.) -
For historical reference, a 2013 poll asking about adding a resource system. This also links to HarvesteR's feedback at that time. Much has obviously changed since then - - - Updated - - - I like this (with or without the catalyst scenario, that Pthigrivi and you are typing about.) I imagine the following - after setup and configuration of the ground station and orbital station - staffing both stations with one of each Engineer / Scientist / Pilot - Set the output of the ground station, to be routed by your helpful minions, to a named orbital station. Then, sight-unseen, fuel magically appears at some periodic interval. They did all the shipping and processing, while you weren't looking

Squadcast Summary (2015-01-31) - The 'Wait For It..' Edition

So much awesome news to take into the weekend, thx for taking trouble to summarize. Holds me over until the next Devnote Tuesday! Heatshield parts... I thought 1.0 would make us think more carefully about re-entry angles and speeds. If heatshield parts negate all of that, and I can keep on doing suicide plunges thanks to them, what's the point of adding heat? -
Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?
basic.syntax replied to hoojiwana's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Yup - different perspectives I have worked in Testing on non-entertainment projects. We disliked the term "QA" because the testers aren't really responsible for assuring quality, just part of the process. They spend the hours nailing down and documenting consistent bug reproduction steps, and do their best to identify the root cause of problems, but its up to Developers and Management to, respectively, implement and approve a fix. If it was up to Test or "QA" - the software would never ship I don't think they promised a bug-free 1.0, as Red Iron Crown notes, that would be a first for any software. Just that the beta phase is the time - now that all major features are locked in - to fix as many bugs as they can. One of my "favorites" is the random wing destruction bug, (bugtracker link) that may occur under certain conditions. Its notoriously difficult to fix intermittent bugs that don't have a known, methodical set of steps to reproduce them. People have been trying. If the aero overhaul doesn't magically fix the problem, due to code changes affecting wings and drag, 1.0 may ship with this bug. I'll be disappointed, but it won't end my world. While searching around, I found this 2010 article: "Gaming's fatal design flaws," which may take you down a memory lane of older games, and/or reinforce whatever beliefs you may have Great comment! -
Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?
basic.syntax replied to hoojiwana's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I see the game as steadily getting better, since I started with the ARM release. I am choosing to trust them and take them at their word, as Devnote Tuesday comes out every Tuesday, showing that progress is being made. Nothing I write will satisfy, if Maxmaps comments don't satisfy. Its what we got, and all we are likely to get. I requote the comments for people who may not have seen them, b/c many people coming into a thread will only look at the most recent pages. I wrote my opinion of the poll question, in this post. More beta releases and test phases before calling a 1.0 would be nice. But its their decision to make. I think we will judge them based on what is released, not on what is said. Then we will start a new discussion thread -
Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?
basic.syntax replied to hoojiwana's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Yes. Nothing really new that hasn't already been addressed, when the thread was getting overheated. Here is a link to Maxmaps tweets and comments earlier in this thread. We were not ignored, this informal gut-reaction poll was seen. Also, the first thread message has been updated, so new readers coming to the thread have replies by Squad, before considering the poll question. That has probably helped the climb from a low of 20% "yes" votes. Squad is doing the right thing, by rolling right along with a solid Devnote Tuesday, showing that they are working hard to solve problems - whether real or perceived, from comments made here. -
I was in high school at the time, an avid follower of these launches, that went off like clockwork. My Dad worked in aerospace, and brought home mission stickers and shuttle program posters. The launch schedule pushed toward monthly. TV news spent less and less time covering the shuttle - it was no longer 'new' and every launch looked the same. On the day, everyone was stunned with disbelief that this could happen. I collected newspaper clippings that followed the progress of the Challenger investigation. It was a painful example of the risks of space launches, that did not seem to exist, until rubbed very hard in our faces.

Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?
basic.syntax replied to hoojiwana's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Agree. For same reasons, on one hand I would like to see another stock-game real life tie-in, like the ARM update that brought me to KSP. Such as the recent comet mission, but, it would have to have some comet-exclusive effects (water vapor jets?) and a different way of interacting with it (core drilling, sample return?), so that it was not just a copy of the asteroid capture mission: a rock with a different texture. -
Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?
basic.syntax replied to hoojiwana's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I've been messing around with KSP since the ARM update, done missions as far as Duna and EVE... but I've never been to Jool! And folks want another planet! hehe. I think one reason is "GP2" has had words and preliminary design work done, but as far as I'm aware, that work hasn't been given any release date by Squad... I speculate it may appear some time after 1.0, or as a surprise feature. You could call new planets a literal 'expansion' of the solar system In the long tradition of "what the eyes do not see, the heart does not long for" - people keep asking about it -
Transfer window indication
basic.syntax replied to Wjolcz's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
+1 to tater's comment. I think some hints about launch windows for stock game would be a great idea, and possibly the amount or accuracy of info, should tie into tracking station upgrade level. I know I can plot and start a burn at any time, but the dV cost might be enormous, if its not optimal. I don't use too many mods, I don't want it all handed to me - so I don't always know what I'm getting into. I've come to love destinations with aerobraking, that makes capture practically free... but if the destination doesn't have an atmosphere... cancelling out your non-optimal dV at the destination takes some experimenting (cough, reload, cough) and going back to the VAB to figure out how you're going to change things around to add more parts, when you were already at your career-mode max parts limit -
Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?
basic.syntax replied to hoojiwana's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Absolutely. The poll is a snapshot of concerned player's gut feelings on the subject. People who have taken the time to register to make comments here. The question kind of leads me to think "ship KSP today and call it 1.0? noway!" ~600 players voting "no" here, is heavily contrasted by ~16,000 positive comments on STEAM. People who have paid money for something that isn't finished, and had fun with it, despite some problems they may have had. That doesn't change when KSP goes to 1.0, I am confident good numbers and a high percentage of new players will STILL find something fun in KSP 1.0, and make a positive comment, even if they note some problems that they had along the way. Critics of this view say standards go up when something is declared "done" and criticism gets harsher. Some of that may happen, but I don't see it derailing the train, as long as Squad sticks to the process that has worked for them pretty well, thus far. Today's dev notes suggest the development train is marching right along -
Do you feel KSP is ready for 1.0?
basic.syntax replied to hoojiwana's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
It's the job of software testing to inform developers and management what the problems are. Management and developers have the responsibility to act on the information. Further, and at times irritating to us, management has to evaluate the cost of developer time to fix obscure bugs that are reported by only a few people, no matter how passionately that small number argues in favor of fixing the bug they found. Management tends to prioritize bugs for fixing, starting by the easiest to reproduce and number of reports. Bugs that are estimated to require a lot of time (money) to investigate and fix, that are also rare and intermittent, get pushed down the list, if higher priorities are still being worked on. -

Stock fairings: Procedural or not?
basic.syntax replied to FishInferno's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
KSP stock game hasn't had p-fairings up to now, the fixed-size cargo bays and career mode limitations on parts count / size / mass - suggest that's the way Squad wanted to go with Stock. I like the career mode challenges of trying different arrangements of parts to accomplish the contract objective, but for those who don't like it, there are new game setup options to reduce the building upgrade 'grind,' sandbox mode, and finally, any mod you can think of. IMO, this discussion is about what parts the *stock* game should have, to give it a little help with the new drag model. Again, tho I enjoy the career mode SPH/VAB craft building challenge (a game both separate and connected to the in-space physics game) of working within limits - I might give up trying to make my payload fit inside a fixed-size cargo bay or fairing, and just "use more boosters" and/or various aero parts, to help fight the new drag model. The stock parts game, if no procedural parts are added, won't prevent us from reaching orbit with large, wildly imaginative things, just add a new drag challenge, to lifting them up there. Are some worried that a new player who knows nothing, might come into KSP, and go away out of frustration, because the stock game's boxes for putting things into space are too small? I hope this player tries to lift the load outside of a box, learns a few things about drag and perhaps even succeeds - or looks for a mod, rather than quit and/or give KSP a negative review. And I think this situation is very similar to what new players face in career mode, with the parts count / size / mass limits in the first-tier SPH/VAB. Discussion on which way Stock game fairings will go might be moot, b/c Maxmaps suggested in his last squadcast, that they may go procedural "out of necessity." Either way, I eagerly await what our space overlords may bring to us, in the coming months.
