[0.25] Realism Overhaul w/ RedAV8R [Terminated]
Hattivat replied to RedAV8R's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
You don't need the ISP scaler, the engine configs provided by Realism Overhaul are already balanced for RSS use (essentially, they have the stats of actual real-world engines). BTW, Red, shouldn't this be on the list of compatible mods: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/76841-%28RSS-RO%29-Constellation-Essentials-v1-3-1-Trusses-Engines-Adapters-%28Apr21%29 ? -
A few days after I got the game I saw a video on youtube of someone building a pancake-shaped monstrosity for eve landing. Upon seeing this I was like "this flies? you gotta be kidding me!", and a few google searches later, I've had FAR in my gamedata folder.

The mod that is causing problems here is PF:CE, as it has not been updated in ages. It's emphatically not a modder's job to make his mod compatible with mods that have not been updated since two game versions ago.

That's probably because it shows you the delta-v at the altitude you are at the time. Hydrolox stages usually have low sea-level Isp and high vacuum Isp, so the effective "at the moment" delta-v could very well rise as you climb up. It's best to have something that can show you the vacuum delta-v and sea-level delta-v separately. Mechjeb does that, don't know about other mods. Generally in RSS you need about 9500 m/s of vacuum delta-v to make it to the low earth orbit.

Ralathon already gave you a very good, but complicated, explanation, so let me give you a simple one in case you had problem understanding what Ralathon means: The size of the tank is irrelevant. You should compare tanks of the same mass, not the same size. Since LiquidHydrogen is less dense than other fuels, you need a bigger tank to have the same mass of it. It's like with water and lead - you need a bigger bucket to carry 10 kilograms of water than you need to carry 10 kg of lead, but they weigh the same.

I wanted to, but KSP TOT stubbornly refused to give me any that made sense, so in the end I just used my moon rocket (80 t to LEO) and made a direct trans-Saturnian injection burn. Woah, this is awesome, you even managed to faithfully recreate the unfolding concept, very impressive. So you're saying that 0.24 with RSS/RO is already running better than the 23.5 version? Are you using the x86 or the x64 executable? I'm still using my 0.23.5 installation, because I have the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach when it comes to my RSS/RO installations. However, if it really is more stable, then I guess it's time to make the switch. -

I don't think it matters which folder things are in, except for clarity, as KSP loads them anyway. -

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone involved in this and all the related mods one more time, you guys make this game worthwhile to me. I've landed on realistic Mars for the first time today, it was a truly exhilarating experience. A friendly hint: The larger the diameter of your heatshield, the better. If you can afford to carry it, having a heatshield that is significantly larger than the payload it protects does wonders in terms of survivability. In other words diameter > ablative shielding. This is obviously most applicable in case of unmanned probes. -

^A sweet plane you've got there, captain! Come on guys, don't let this thread die! Some probes/landers from me: -
My first extraterrestial landings in the Real Solar System / Realism Overhaul: Landing on Mars in RSS is a truly breathtaking experience, I recommend it to everyone (except maybe people at risk of stroke, it's truly intense).

The UAE wants to go to Mars by 2021.

By "throwing it's weight" you mean bullying tiny regions like East Timor or Aceh? That's about as much as they can do, given that their navy and airforce are pretty much non-existent. What they did there is deplorable, no doubt about it, but I fail to see what it has to do with "general belligerence" or lack thereof. We are talking about the behavior of local militias and a few select army units (especially Kopassus), which can hardly be construed to represent the general public. Especially given that this happened when Suharto (a dictator) was still in power. ...so threatened that they let hundreds of thousands of their citizens visit Indonesia every month. And hundreds of thousands of Indonesians come to work and/or study in Australia. Totally like countries on the brink of war, totally. Besides, what does RAAF feel threatened with? Their grand total of 35 fighter jets, mostly hopelessly outdated and likely not too combat-ready? Overall I see that you mean that their military brass are crazy, which they very well might be. However, when I read "general belligerence" the image that comes to my mind is one of massive demonstrations chanting "death to those pesky Thais!" (and meaning it) or something similar, and this is emphatically not what Indonesian public is like. If anything, an average Indonesian person is less likely to make belligerent statements than an average American or an average Pole. -

I think you misunderstood me here. I wasn't saying that Singapore* or UAE don't need to spend money on defense, they definitely do. And they are certainly being taken very seriously in the sense that Indonesia probably wouldn't dare to think of invading Singapore. But on the other hand neither would they ever seriously consider the possibility of Singapore invading them, because that's obviously never going to happen. What I meant was that countries like Singapore or UAE are usually not perceived as external threats, and thus their defense expenditures do not spark an arms race. So for example when UAE buys new tanks, Israel or Iran is not going to double their defense expenditure in panic, because they know very well that the chance of these tanks ever being offensively used against them is pretty much zero. But if and when UAE developed ICBM and/or nukes, I expect it would all change - they would suddenly graduate from "small, opulent state with an oversized defense force" to "serious competition with power projection capabilities". That's what I meant in my previous comments. It's entirely possible that I'm not up to speed on the region, but given how much coverage it receives, and my penchant for reading articles on foreign affairs, if UAE military was considered a major factor in future Middle Eastern conflicts, I'd expect to see recurring mentions of that fact. *It happens that I do know a fair bit about the region, as I've lived in Indonesia for over a year and can speak the language almost fluently. Can't boast of too much contact with the expats, as I've found most of them extremely off-putting, but I did have more than my fair share of contact with the locals. No idea what "general belligerence" you are talking about, relative to their size they hardly have an army to speak of. -

^On this topic I think someone ought to tell them Emiratis that there are literal lakes of hydrocarbons on Titan, I'd love to see some more hi-res pics of its surface. As for Venus, yeah, that was obviously a joke, although one not entirely ungrounded in reality. I don't know what it's like in Texas, as I've never been there, but I don't imagine that living there in the summer involves moving from one refrigerated ("air-conditioned" doesn't quite fit the magnitude of climate control we are talking about here) closed space to another refrigerated closed space, and doing your best to avoid any sort of contact with actual outside air at all cost. I've been in Dubai for a day, and it really felt like living under a dome on some alien world where environment is hostile and all that keeps you alive is life support. -

Hattivat replied to Streetwind's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Regardless of how much money they spend on conventional weapons, I've never seen any analysis discuss them as a potential threat to anyone or even as an active combatant in any potential war, so I'm assuming that no one really perceives them as a threat. Singapore also spends a huge pile of money on its defense (more than the vast Indonesia!), and somehow I don't see any of its neighbors being afraid of a Singaporean intervention, or feeling a need to raise their military spending to defend against the dreaded Singaporean invasion. -

For me by far the most striking feature of the rocket is that its lower stages have foldable landing gear a'la Falcon reusable. And I'm not a Space X fanboy in case you were wondering. Sure, but the countries you mention are traditional big players in the region. UAE in turn is currently considered more or less harmless by the "big boys", like Norway or Hongkong. If they were to develop ICBMs and nukes (the latter might not be as far off as it sounds, they need something to power all these air conditioners once oil runs dry), it would drastically alter the balance of power. On a side note - why Mars and not Venus? Given that they already live in a similar climate, I'd say UAE are uniquely positioned to develop Venus-applicable technology. -

Hattivat replied to Streetwind's topic in Science & Spaceflight
First of all, why does the Arabic video illustrating that space.com article depict a falcon heavy launching with a UAE flag? Did Space X give them permission for such promotional use? Second, when it comes to the UAE economy, it's not oil that is the elephant in the room (although it's also important), it's the millions of South Asians working for peanuts in slave-like conditions. Dubai may be able to survive running out of oil, but it sure as hell wouldn't survive if its brown-skinned servants were to revolt or leave. Third, if UAE were to develop their own satellite-launching capability, that pretty much equals having an ICBM capability, and might spark an arms race in the region. -
Sure, but with this approach in order to replicate a realistic-looking neighborhood for Kerbol I would have to put it at a distance of thousands of lightyears from the central black hole, and I doubt if the game engine can handle that. For this reason I'd like to go for the next-best option, that is having stars on extremely slow orbits of different inclination.
-
I see. Let's hope people manage to keep Planet Factory alive then. I meant that the real-life solar neighborhood is not exactly a flat surface ( ), and as I'm one of the realism-oriented players, I'd like to customize the other stars to be in more believable positions relative to kerbol. If that can be achieved through config, that's great and exactly what I wanted. I wasn't asking you to make any changes to your default configuration, just wanted to know if your mod could handle such an option
