[0.23.5] Realism Overhaul: ROv5.2 + Modlist for RSS 6/30/14
Hattivat replied to NathanKell's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
@3: I meant: Why would you even use solid fuel outside of Kerbin, when Interstellar gives you awesome engines which run on Liquid H2? And yeah, I like MKS very much too. Haven't thought of using it in RSS though, that's very ambitious (I still find it challenging to do a moon landing in Realism Overhaul, and haven't yet tried to leave Earth SOI in my career mode save). -

2. It should work, yes. And as most of the resources Interstellar adds are already realistic and are not present in RealFuels, it basically boils down to LiquidFuel, Oxidizer and Monopropellant. I think it would be easier to change Interstellar's parts to use (and produce) Liquid H2, LOx and Hydrazine than the other way around. 3. No idea how to do it plausibly, as I'm not a chemist, but actually: Why would you? I mean, with advanced technology that Interstellar gives you Liquid H2 is pretty much all you need. Hydrazine is n2h4, while ammonia is nh3, so I'd assume that it's relatively easy to turn one into the other. As an example, Laythe's oceans are supposed to be full of ammonia. Regarding Kethane: It's hopelessly unrealistic (producing Xenon out of a hydrocarbon, lol), whereas Interstellar is chemically realistic (hydrolizing water into Liquid Fuel and Oxidizer, for example), so I'd say that makes much more sense to use Interstellar for refueling in a realism-focused KSP client. -
[0.23.5] Realism Overhaul: ROv5.2 + Modlist for RSS 6/30/14

Some of these packs only give you a couple of engines, others give you dozens. The ones that give you most of the engines (and therefore are a priority) are: KW Rocketry, Nova Punch, AIES, and Bobcat's Soviet engines. If you mean a single part, then no, I've never seen anything like that. If you mean a complete rocket the top of which sticks out of the VAB's roof then yeah, that's something to get used to. They both work, but they both cost you precious RAM space, so the only real danger here is one of frequent crashes due to running out of RAM. If I may suggest something: you could start playing with history-focused part packs (FASA, Kosmos) and once you progress beyond that stage in the career mode, delete most or all of them and replace them with futuristic part packs (Near Future, Kethane, Interstellar, Constellation Essentials). This is a very viable solution, because you are unlikely to ever use FASA and Kosmos parts once you progress beyond moon landings, and just as unlikely to use any of the futuristic mods before you reach that stage. Not sure, but why wouldn't you want to use RealFuels? They are awesome. Yes, it is required, otherwise you get science according to Kerbin's and Mun's original biomes, which have no relation to how they look in RSS (you can get "in space just above kerbin's highlands" while flying over an ocean, for example). I'm not sure, but I don't think RSS does anything to the biomes. What it changes are the models. Enables adjustable gimbal for engines and I think (unsure) overall makes gimbals work better. It resizes all of the supported parts to real-world sizes. In other words, makes everything bigger. Playing RSS with FAR without RO resizes would be pretty hard, I think. Other than that, it also updates the parts to work with the required realism mods (Engine Ignitor, for example). I like the idea, but if plausible near future technology is what you're after, then the mod called (nomen omen) Near Future Technology is your friend. Most of what Interstellar provides is of the far-future kind. Only the realism-enhancing mods are truly required, and these don't weigh much (most are under a megabyte) so there is no risk of your computer exploding. Also, as far as part packs are concerned, you can often safely delete many of the parts in them (especially fuel tanks) to conserve space. And Active Texture Manager (aggressive version) is absolutely recommended (don't worry, the game still looks good with it). Overall, if you have never played Realism Overhaul before, my suggestion is to take it easy and avoid spending too much time thinking about the futuristic mods. It will be a while before you start using them, first you have to re-learn how to get into orbit. -
[WIP][TechTree @ 0.23.5] - [MS19e] - Realistic Progression LITE
Hattivat replied to MedievalNerd's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
It can be safely window-moded and run in the background so it's no biggie in my opinion, I just surf the web in the meantime, or better yet, do something productive. And besides, it's just once, subsequent launches are much faster. For reference: I play on a laptop with intel i7 2630qm 2ghz, 8gb of RAM and geforce gt540m with 2gb of vram. -

^ I can confirm they definitely aren't all in the first node. I thought it was intentional though. -

Hm, to my admittedly limited knowledge this is not the kind of errors that should freeze the game. Do you have the b9 aerospace mod installed? If not, then it is no wonder that compiling alternative spaces for its pods fails, and it should not freeze the game. 1 hour should definitely be enough for it to finish rebuilding the planets though, I think it took sth like 40 minutes on my computer. And it did update the log, sometimes it took longer than five minutes for an update to appear, but definitely not an hour. I think your best bet would be to describe your situation in more detail (like: which configs you are using, whether it is a fresh install or one on which you have already used some or all of the Realism Overhaul mods, and in the latter case, if they worked) and wait for one of the relevant mods' authors to notice and help you. PS Just one thought - In case you were using the RSS config with Planet Factory and it was your first time trying it, did you follow the instructions I quote below? [EDIT:] Actually I've realized I've updated the configs today and deleted the old obj files just to be on the safe side, so I have an example of what a correct log looks like. All in all it took 56 minutes for KSP to load, including 5 minutes for normal parts and the texture manager, then 32 minutes for RSS, and 19 minutes of what seems like an inexplicable freeze (judging from the log, I was doing other things in the meantime so no idea how it looked like on the screen). I'm posting the RSS part of the log below: [LOG 21:52:56.497] *RSS* fixing bodies [LOG 21:52:56.498] *RSS* InverseScaleFactor = 0.0001666667 [LOG 21:52:56.499] Fixing CB Sun [LOG 21:52:56.500] *RSS* useLegacyAtmosphere = False but pressureCurve not found! [0.23.5] Realism Overhaul: ROv5.2 + Modlist for RSS 6/30/14
Hattivat replied to NathanKell's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Does this happen with every engine? Perhaps you use stronger engines than necessary - you should aim for a sea-level TWR of 1.2 at launch (KER reading of TWR is incorrect, only MechJeb provides correct sea-level TWR figures). -

Hattivat replied to NathanKell's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Some of the engines should not gimbal. However, if none of them can gimbal, that probably means you lack some plugin (like ExsurgentEngineering that reaching for the stars requires, or the Klockheed Martian plugin). As far as running out of power is concerned - are you using multiple antennas or the extremely-long range ones? They are very power-hungry. -

Sickboy: Is this your first time using RSS? If yes, then let it run for at least 45 minutes (obviously, I recommend doing it in windowed mode). It will look like it's frozen, but it should in fact be doing something (you can check that in the KSP.log file, it gets updated once every five or so minutes). RSS can take a lot of time to "recreate" the planets on the first start-up, especially if you use the config with planet factory. -

Nice, just what I need. One suggestion: if it wouldn't be too much of a hassle, consider adding support for the metaphor's RSS + Planet Factory config (obviously not a priority, just something to consider adding once you achieved a release version for standard RSS). -

After completing all the LEO probes and setting up a communication network, I'm getting ready for my first manned orbital launch (Mercury-Atlas). I've noticed I don't have the LR-89 engine available, is this intended? If so, am I supposed to use one of the German/British engines in its place? -

Ok, I finally have fairing bases. Turns out one has to buy the second level of control tech to have them enabled. Weird. -
Personally I use this pack for EVE, it makes the game look amazing: In any case, you should add Chatterer to your list, it improves the mood a lot (it adds communication sounds, like your astronauts speaking with mission control in Kerbish, or your probes transmitting data). As far as getting "stuff to do" is concerned, there are three possible approaches in my opinion (which are mostly not mutually exclusive, so you can combine aspects of them): 1. Go futuristic, ie. do stuff that has not yet been achieved by us humans: Interstellar mod, Modular Kolonization System, Kethane, Porkwork's Habitat pack, Extraplanetary Launchpads, LackLuster Labs, Near Future packs 2. Go for moderate realism: Ferram Aerospace Research, Deadly Reantry, Real Chutes, TAC life support. Since FAR changes the way the game is played (realistic aerodynamics mean that asparagus-staging no longer works and you need to build tall, aerodynamic rockets like in real life), you need Procedural Fairings and KW Rocketry and/or NovaPunch with it. 3. Go for full realism: Realism Overhaul. Makes everything real-size (stock Kerbin is smaller than real-life moon) and therefore much harder. Very nice to have, but also very challenging and pretty tough to get to install properly. There are part packs such as FASA which let you recreate real-world space programs if you are into history. Things that are overall useful in any case (mostly utilities): Kerbal Engineer Redux, Floor It, Procedural Parts, Crew Manifest, Kerbal Attachment System, Kerbal Alarm Clock There are also some part packs for building space shuttles (B9 aerospace, Kerbal Shuttle Orbiter) and space stations (Fustek, Kosmos) [Edit:] I second diomedea's suggestion to avoid adding too many mods at once. Do it gradually to get used to what they offer. Also, a suggested solution for major game-changing mods (like the Realism Overhaul, and to a lesser degree FAR): You can maintain two separate installations of KSP, with different sets of mods (or one with mods, and another without any of them, as you please). Personally I have two installations of KSP, one combining approaches #1 and #2 above, and another for Realism Overhaul.

I had no idea about that caps lock trick, thanks! With this help and after a copious amount of attempts, I've finally sort of managed to put Sputnik 2 in orbit. "Sort of" because periapsis was at 120 km, but it was stable enough to perform all the experiments, so I can move on. The end of the burn was still quite rough, but manageable. [edit:] As for the fairings - yeah, it probably needs patching. Or I have done something terribly wrong when installing mods. In any case, I have researched fairings up to 2.5 m (3rd tech level) and I still have literally no fairing bases available to me. I do have fairing walls (too many of them in fact), but no bases, other than the interstage one. In R&D it shows me that I have plenty of fairing bases, but none of them appear in VAB. -

It is certainly decent, you did a good job. I'm just pointing out a few inconsistencies. I don't know about recreating R-7, maybe the player is not intended to do that at my stage, but I'm pretty sure I should have access to the A7 engine. Currently it is in the Freedom 7 node, while imho it should be either in engines 1 or in explorer 1 node. No, I'm pretty sure I haven't installed real engines. Well, my problem is actually that I'm being forced to recreate history - Sputnik 2 is 2 meters wide, and at my tech level, I have no way of creating a 2m tank - small engine - 2m tank interstage (proc fairings only go up to 1.5 m, no dedicated interstages available, decouplers only in 0.5m, 0.625m and 2m sizes). As a result, I can't have an upper stage, and am forced to launch it balistically like an actual R-7 would (hence my complaint about being unable to recreate its looks - if I am de facto forced to recreate it anyway, I'd like it to look right), which is proving rather difficult. I freely admit that I'm a noob at RSS, so it is certainly possible given enough trial-and-error, but the rise in difficulty between Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2 is massive as the result, which is hardly a good design choice as far as player progression is concerned. Thanks, I didn't know that. It would be nice to have a wiki or a tutorial explaining such things. I don't want to use RCS, but I might do it in desperation. And I certainly agree gimbaling is more than enough, in fact that's precisely the problem. The gimbaling on large engines is so strong that with a 1.5-stage rocket (as described above, I'm unable to have an upper stage for Sputnik 2) keeping it on course towards the end of the burn, when mass gets low, feels like a rodeo. With Sputnik 1 I could have a small upper stage, so it was relatively easy. With Sputnik 2 the margin of error gets very small. Yes, I do, but I wasn't aware that differences could get that big. -

I should have been more precise: RPL's required mods already provide the necessary parts (FASA has the A7 engine, KW rocketry has russian-style side tanks, and Bobcat's russian engines include all the necessary ones iirc), the issue here is that RPL does not give access to these parts early enough. The result is that at the moment I have huge modern-looking kerolox engines (which descriptions claim are German) at my disposal but need to spend 100 more science to get a WWII-grade alcohol-fueled engine (A7 was directly derived from V-2 technology). That is plain absurd. Also, a third issue: It might be a result of some sort of mistake on my part during the installation process, but some engines have absurd sizes. I mean, one American engine with 195 thrust is literally four times the volume of a Russian one with 380 (or sth like that) thrust. -

Some feedback: Overall it's a very nice idea, I like the probes, etc. However, there are a few complaints. First of all, player gets the probe cores long before he gets the engines used to launch them historically. I mean, I have the sputniks, but I have no way of recreating the R-7 rocket; I have the explorer, but I don't have the A7 engine. Second, some missions seem utterly impossible to do properly. I mean, did someone seriously succeed in launching Sputnik 2 without any RCS or reaction wheels? If yes, I'd like to know how, to me it feels like riding a drunk horse. -
^ Actually if we were to be realistic it doesn't make much sense to have any glass on any side at all, as it results in enormous heat losses (lets UV radiation get out) and massive structural weakness for little gain (you could just as well collect the sunlight with lenses and transmit it into the module with fiberoptics, or even simply use solar arrays to power artificial LED lighting). Regerdless of that, the model looks awesome, I'm very much looking forward to trying it out.

Mods you simply refuse to play KSP without?
Hattivat replied to Tortoise's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
FAR, DRE, KER, Docking alignment indicator, crew manifest Basically the utilities and realism improvements that I believe should eventually become part of the stock game (at least as a difficulty setting option). I'm also using tons of part packs and beautification mods, but these I could do without. -
I could never understand this whole attitude of seeing mods as something shameful, or even taking pride in not using any. I mean, it's like vowing to never use a mouse or headphones with your laptop, because they were not included in the box. Or like refusing to pour ketchup on a microwaved pizza because you prefer it "stock".

can i run high settings with this.
Hattivat replied to ac30fspad35's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
For comparison purposes, my laptop specs: win 7, intel i7 2630qm @2gHz, 8 gb RAM, GeForce GT540M with 2 gb VRAM This is enough to run KSP with near-maximum video settings (only anti-aliasing and terrain scatters are turned down) with a ****load of mods (sth like 40 different mods at this point, including the ones that improve visuals), and is smooth and stable unless I decide to launch something with an excessive amount of parts. So unless AMD has some significant disadvantage, that laptop you are planning to buy should be fine and dandy. -
Sure, and I like how they all have a coherent style. My personal search for window-less greenhouses stems from my interest in long-term missions to Jool, etc. - it just feels wrong to me to have large windows in the outer solar system - you'd lose more heat this way than you'd gain in energy.
-
^That's from 2003. Modern solutions look more like this: As for windows - it depends on the destination, like solar panels. In inner solar system they make perfect sense, but the farther you go from the sun, the less point there is in having them.
