And going nuclear will just make the heat management during battle worse. -
Space Warfare - How would the ships be built/designed?
Hary R replied to Sanguine's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Here is a base on the tech level achievable, every si-fish weapon (laser, particle canon, plasma) will require a tremendous (well may be i'm exaggerating) amount of power, the generator that can generate that amount of power will generate a lot of wast heat no matter what. So how much heat sinking system do you need on a military battle-ready spaceship? Will you opponent will aim to destroy your ship or render it inoperable by overheating it (lasers are good for that). -
Wow, that will make us to be in year 11 315.

Well, it's not from his exact birthday, he was born on 25th of December of year 1 BC (yeah weird I know don't question it) But we get the idea. By the way, most people use this calendar for commerce and international official things, for other event, non christian (and some of them like us) use a different calendar... ever heard of Chinese new year? Edit: exactly
-
I wouldn't have tell it this way but I do agree with the idea, the starting point should be something more representative of all humanity, not only a christian related thing. Well, mind you, i'm christian so I don't really mind the current starting point.
-
Could be a good idea but the exact date of the founding is uncertain so... arbitrary:rolleyes:
-
We did, it was the arabic one, and some very old Indonesian stuff to, Also how about china with it's more than 5000 year of civilization? India To?
-
The Gregorian (Julian is slightly different) christian calendar have been wildly accepted throughout the world due to most influential country use it but you can use whatever system you like. For me, there is no reason to change something most people are used to. (it's not broken so don't fix it) This is even more arbitrary as European renaissance is a very European reference, here in Madagascar we never underwent that.

Here is one, a customer of my wife's cyber-cafe: the customer: Miss please, your computer won't load internet. my wife: what, you are sure? What website do you want to get to. the customer: Facebook. my wife: did you enter the URL correctly the customer: I didn't even touch the keyboard. Shouldn't the computer do that automatically? .... Yep that really happened. let's say that an hypersonic palm hit may head when my wife told me about it Oh! an another one: A person asked my wife this once : "how do you get to internet with a computer. I know how to do it with my phone but not with a computer". still not made it up, really happened. Well that one was kind of "I can understand it" as phone are more common place than computer here where i live. -

NEVER go into the comments on a video about physics in general, the deeper you go, the more depressed you feel and the more concerned you are about the intellectual abilities of mankind. -

HDYPOTD: How do you pronounce the -apsis twins?
Hary R replied to Superfluous J's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Apogee/ Perigee is only for Earth, it come from the Greek word apogeos or far from earth. The apsis twin: Quote from wikipedia. Well it's a more general term -
Ironically, in today environment (internet... but also sometime school, family etc.) we are doing the opposite...Actually, we have done exactly this: "high intelligence potential people who are hampered to reach it due to the environent". I mean just read the facepalm thread, With the high level of misinformation we have today, thank you internet, what will giving human higher genetic potential will change.

You can't keep it fully Victorian steam punk hard science fiction, as said in the post you quote, technology was not on pare with what is required to go to space and scientific knowledge was... well Jules Verne's "from the earth to the moon" was hard science fiction at the time. But as steam punk is mostly an alternate history, we can imagine that they somehow find a way to make thing to have the required tolerance, a sudden breakthrough for example where they have the modern style materials way before us. The hard part of that is to keep it Steam punk, that kind of breakthrough came from a breakthrough in other domain of science, which will lead to find other form of energy.

Well my idea about reading this novel was not to see how accurate it was (in regard of today's science, it's not), but how a victorian rocket scientist would have conceived a spaceflight. ( and they did think it would be like in the novel) If you want to build a story around steampunk spacefilght, Verns vision will be the dominant vision of the scientist at first, they will try the gun concept, fail miserably and then they will come to a different solution in regards of the available technology. Verns novel is a starting point where the steampunk world can evolve from.
