Tarantulae, "Engines"?! We don' need no steenkin' engines! Good job! Best, -Slashy

Recovering a lost Kerbal from orbit
GoSlash27 replied to spacedoctor42's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Well... You have the command pod mk.1. You should also have the stayputnik unlocked if you have the mobile processing lab. You should be able to construct a remote guided recovery vessel with an empty mk.1 pod. Alternatively, you could construct a ship with 2 mk.1 pods (1 unmanned), but if it were me I'd go with the stayputnik. No sense in risking another kerbal needlessly. Best, -Slashy -

Are Sabre Engines More Efficient?
GoSlash27 replied to Blondai's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Cirocco, I'd disagree with point #2. A properly designed and flown turbojet/ rocket spaceplane needs very little rocket thrust to maintain apoapsis and circularize on arrival. More rocket thrust (even if it's essentially "free") doesn't do you any favors. But as you point out, they *do* need to be flown correctly to achieve their potential. If you find yourself needing more rocket thrust, you're doing something wrong. I've seen turbojet spaceplanes circularize on RCS thrusters. Personally, I'm hoping that turbojets get beaten unconscious with a nerf- bat in 1.0. They're just plain too good and they wreck the balance of the game. Best, -Slashy -
TWR and Terminal Velocity
GoSlash27 replied to Northstar1989's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I'm not sure why this thread got necro'd, but the original premise is flawed. As a ship tilts prograde, terminal velocity increases at a slower and slower rate. Accordingly, you need less and less thrust to maintain terminal velocity. The whole "terminal velocity rises exponentially" thing only applies when you're climbing vertically, which is a fairly small part of the launch profile. Best, -Slashy -
"Not 'round here, Sir." "Well... what is the most popular cheese 'round SHUT THAT BLOODY BAZOUKI UP!!" Umm... I like Chinese. I like Chinese...

The way to look at it is $/tonne rather than $/launch. Moreover, each satellite going to a higher/ different orbit weighs a lot more than just the payload; you need the rocket/ fuel/guidance/ structure to place the payload there. Not to sound dismissive, but it makes sense to the folks who make such decisions. If they were saving money doing it that way, they would. And it wouldn't cut down on orbital debris. In fact, it would add to it. Remember that everything that's not circularized comes back down. Best, -Slashy

Are Sabre Engines More Efficient?
GoSlash27 replied to Blondai's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Blondai, Sorry, "Orbital Maneuvering System"; engines intended to circularize and adjust orbits, but not intended to be part of the launch itself. Best, -Slashy -
It's definitely possible that I have old parts interfering. If only it was the okto2 Best, -Slashy

Teegee, I doubt you're saving any money doing it that way even in KSP. Economy of scale doesn't really work in space and it's wasteful to use more rocket than you need for a payload. Time, sure... so long as you happen to have multiple payloads that can go in the same launch window. Due to the limitations mentioned upstream and more, this rarely happens IRL. For example, we don't launch stuff from the equator directly into a zero inclination orbit IRL. We tend to do this in KSP, which makes windows a lot less demanding. Best, -Slashy - - - Updated - - - As a practical matter it does, but the important point is that it definitely doesn't improve with size. Therefore there is no economy of scale to be had. It's run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex- parrot! An argument is a series of statements to establish a proposition. It isn't just saying 'no it isn't'.

Yessir, it's Magnets. I probably shoulda picked an image that didn't have the answer in the filename Explanation: The Insane Clown Posse pondered how magnets work in one of their songs and it became an internet viral meme. But you can't hear them ask the question without magnets, since their microphones and your speakers need magnets in order to function. Starwhip's turn! Best, -Slashy

I don't know of any other aircraft besides the A-10 that uses that style of boarding ladder. I think this is the original model for the KSP part. Best, -Slashy

The only problem with this game is that everybody catches the Holy Grail references, but very few catch any references from other work. Let's try this: Somebody posts a MP line, and then the next poster posts the correct response to it. For example: "I didn't expect a sort of Spanish Inquisition..." "NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!" I'll lead off. A Møøse once bit my sister.

Page 3. Last repost and last hint. Hint #1 The aforementioned clown musings regarding my methods are an internet meme. Hint #2 The clowns in question, despite their title, are neither mentally unstable nor do they ride around on horseback meting out frontier justice. Hint #3 "How do they work?" It'll be a miracle if nobody gets this... Best, -Slashy

Are Sabre Engines More Efficient?
GoSlash27 replied to Blondai's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Rapiers are definitely not as effective or efficient as turbojet/ rocket combos. Yes, you can save a couple parts and a tiny amount of dry mass, but you have to make up 400 m/sec when using them in air breathing mode compared to turbojets and they also have less thrust. This ensures that you'll need more fuel and associated structure, which winds up making them heavier for the same payload. Turbojet/ OMS rocket combos are so overpowered that it makes no sense to launch any other way if you have the tech. Best, -Slashy -
Watching this video brings me physical pain. Best, -Slashy

Actually, the Stayputnik does have reaction wheels, which is why I'm stuck with it. The Okto2 and cube have no reaction wheels in .90. Best, -Slashy

Deutherius, As promised, here's my 70kg 4 piece design: As I said, functionally identical to your winning entry except for the okto2 core. http://wikisend.com/download/574768/Nano3.craft I was able to fly it to the island without incident, but wasn't able to land it without breaking the ceiling. Should've disabled the pitch response like you did Have fun, -Slashy
