Eve SSTO: Now with cheaty goodness!
goduranus replied to GoSlash27's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Slash, can you build up my kraken drive craft to make it infiniglide? Seeing you're good building them. I tried to build a small kraken drive to fit your ion planes and infinigliders, but kraken drives with small landing gear no longer works for me. -
Eve SSTO: Now with cheaty goodness!
goduranus replied to GoSlash27's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Save with your ships deployed slightly above ground, open the persistent.sfs in your save, search for your ship's name. Find this bit under it: { SMA = 254455.858162046 ECC = 0.00162508745532466 INC = 89.3354083743924 LPE = 329.14994596865 LAN = 104.888197651799 MNA = 5.92262687496016 EPH = 587821.70631226 REF = 1 } and change REF to 5. Make sure you backup your save file before editing -
here's my kraken drive craft, it still works. They work by having a reaction wheel that twist the craft very very slightly from frame to frame. So a landing gear will clip onto different parts on the ship, causing its suspension length to osciliate, which generates an impulse. http://kerbal.curseforge.com/shareables/223310-stock-reactionless-drive-craft-event-horizon btw you need to get above 800m/s and activate SAS for optimum effect

Eve SSTO: Now with cheaty goodness!
goduranus replied to GoSlash27's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I tried to combine one of your planes with a small kraken drive someone else posted, it's got enough speed for fast mode, but that particular one was broken by the patch. I will try to redesign one, and it should reach orbit. -
Eve SSTO: Now with cheaty goodness!
goduranus replied to GoSlash27's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Mine still works. Given about a week of climbing time, this thing will SSTO from anywhere, then use its rockets for a boost to fast mode. http://kerbal.curseforge.com/shareables/223310-stock-reactionless-drive-craft-event-horizon Press 6 to activate kraken drive. -
Eve SSTO: Now with cheaty goodness!

how fast can you make ion gliders on Eve? if you can get it above 800m/s then a kraken drive will take it the rest of the way. -
Am I the first one to circumnavigate Kerbin by land?
goduranus replied to Wooks's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
It is an impressive feat to circumnavigate, but boats are faster than rovers, and achievements should go by the slowest mode of movement used. If I circumnavigated by a combination of plane and rover, I should count it as an air circumnavigation because a plane was used, and travelling by air lowered the difficulty. -
Am I the first one to circumnavigate Kerbin by land?
goduranus replied to Wooks's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
wait a minute, you have not really circumnavigated by land, because a good part of your journey is done on a boat, so this really is a circumnavigation with combined land and boat. To claim circumnavigation by land, the ocean should be crossed by driving a rover along the sea floor. -
New Contract Types: Satellites

Dock and refuel satellites/stations would be a good mission. -
Stock nuclear air-breathing engines
goduranus replied to goduranus's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
It does, but unlike antimatter or moon-mining, nuclear jet is probably one of the most realistic technologies in that mod, where working prototypes were actually built in the real world. I think you need to connect a reactor to a thermo jet in Interstellar. One of Scott Manley's interstellar quest episodes shows how to put it together. -
Stock nuclear air-breathing engines
goduranus replied to goduranus's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
another nuke-jet picture to add some flavor Just imagine if all the payload were SCIENCE! -
Hell, 0.24 messed up visual effects of Interstellar's thermojet engines. But in any case, nuclear jet engine should be a part of the stock game, as they are real-world technologies that would aid the exploration of inert atmospheres. In terms of technical feasibility, nuclear jets(real world counterparts prototyped and successfully tested but never put into operation) would be no less practical than the LV-N. While nuclear jets would probably have ISP in the hundreds of thousands, their awesome power could be counterbalanced by weight, high cost, and possibly a reputation hit and credits costs if they crash on Kerbin, which I also suggest should be the case for all nuclear parts. Real world examples of nuclear jets: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WS-125 Prototype engines built in 1956 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Pluto Prototype engines built in 1961 In fact, given the popularity of KSP, I suspect that such an implementation of nuclear jets for the exploration of Eve might prompt the real world to propose using nuclear jets for extended exploration of Venus. Which would be one step forward for science.

[Stock] Gyroplane altitude challenge
goduranus replied to goduranus's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Is that the only stock wing piece that can still infiniglide? My previous infinigliders no longer work when a patch slow down the control surface movement, so I thought infiniglidering no longer worked. I don't think Gyroplane is cheating though, most designs in game need to be powered by RTGs, and so they fall into the category of air-dependent nuclear propulsion. The near-infinite endurance of a Gyroplane in the atmosphere is not overpowered compared to other forms of nuclear jets. For example Project Pluto was expected to be able to stay airborne for months at a time. I hope you could settle with you submission being in the honorary mention section? I suspect it works, and complies all the rules. But while infinigliding is already a well developed concept, including powerful designs such as yours may stagnate interest in the relatively uncommon gyroplane designs in the community. -
[Stock] Gyroplane altitude challenge
goduranus replied to goduranus's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Does the FAR pitch assistance keep the nose steady? That would solve the biggest problem with using this type of crafts. -
It's like a nuclear powered helicopter, with reaction wheels standing in for a helicopter drive system not in the game. Combining an air breathing nuclear propulsion(though not necessarily in helicopter form) with a nuclear rocket is probably a reasonable way of building a SSTO that launch from more extreme atmospheres.

[Stock] Gyroplane altitude challenge
goduranus replied to goduranus's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Thanks for the sticky. Kutku, that things climbs fast. -
It's Korruption! Just like how Joe Biden's son got a job drilling oil in Ukraine after the maidans took over! Kerbarika, Krussia, all the same:mad: Anyways, I will try this challenge, should be easy with an overfueled SSTO with a nuclear engine attached. Edit: also, the recovery bonus could be cheated by loading the craft with tons of expensive and lightweight components, and recovering them to increase the percentage recovered. I recommend that this be changed to a straight subtraction of the difference, between launch value from recovery value ,from the final score.

That + - circle thing sounds very useful

[Stock] Gyroplane altitude challenge
goduranus replied to goduranus's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Agh, you've broken the challenge Upsilon! Nice to see unintended things being made. I should probably change the rule to require a payload. You will receive a honorary mention though, but not a challenge rank, cuz that probably won't work for a Jool science return mission. @Marvin, one of the things to try in order to stay stable as you get higher, is to progressively turn off the reaction wheel so the spin speed stays low enough for you to correct it, you'll lose rate of climb though -
Been testing to see if I could make a stock vehicle that returns with a Jool "surface sample", and sought some community input through posting a challenge. Since all engines are very inefficient in the depths of Jool, I wanted a vehicle that can ascend without any engines. The solution I came up with is to use slanted wing with reaction wheels like a helicopter rotor. But this challenge is open to any method of gaining altitude without engines, as long as all parts are stock. Engines can be equipped, but not activated. Autopilots is permitted, however. Rules: 1 Scoring will be solely based on altitude achieved without activating any engines, measured in meters above sea level at Kerbin; 2 All attempts should start at runway or launch pad; 3 Driving or rolling your craft along the ground up a mountain doesn't count; 4 All parts except for autopilot modules must be stock, using 0.235-0.24 physics;(non-overpowered mods could be scored separately); 5 The craft should be able to carry at least one ton of payload(in the spirit of making a vehiclefor returning from Eve or Jool) 6 Due to the awesome power of infiniglide vehicles, submissions that rely solely on infinigliding would receive honorary mention only, so as to promote alternative methods of propulsion My proof of concept attempt (My thing was carrying the return vehicle) Leaderboard Stock: 1.MabDeno 2. DragonEG(12140 meters) 3. MarvinKitFox(11300 meters) 4. hoioh(10112 meters) 5. TheKutKu(4700 meters) 6. goduranus (637 meters) Mods: 1. Master Tao (22223 meters) 2. DragonEG(18768 meters) 3.zipmafia(16981 meters) - Infernal Robotics 4.hoioh(16290 meters) - FAR 5. Honorary mention: Upsilon Aerospace - (Kerbin Escape) [strut with one wing] goSlash27 - 30661 meters [infiniglider] Zipmafia - Max Ascend Speed - 72.5 meters(75 was the absolute speed); Max G - 2.8; Max Altitude - 10787 meters

I know Alarm Clock does this, but this bit is useful enough, simple enough to use or program, I suggest that it be stock. Say, when a craft is within - 1 minute of its maneuvering node, some text would be displayed on the screen telling you about it, and timewarp slows to no more than 5x, until it is completely ignored past +1 minute. Optionally the said craft would flash on the tracking screen, or a popup would be opened asking the player if he wishes to switch to it.

I launched my $200k Moho landing probe, with 6 sets of science equipment but forgot to attach either antennas for transmission or parachutes for recovery. It was a no-save no-load scenario.
