[0.25] Astronomer's Visual Pack - Interstellar V2
hazard-ish replied to Astronomer's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Gosh - sorry if this is a stupid question, but is there any way I can download the old 'astronomer's visual pack V3'? I had that version running perfectly and it still looks fantastic. I can't get the new interstellar version to work. -
Hi, I have had one, very minor, issue. I've noticed that the ground scatter on Ovok is the same colour regardless of whether the sun is shining on it. On the dark side of the moon, the ground scatter is clearly visible making the surface look like stars. Also, (I hate to sound picky, so sorry!) could Eeloo and Slate be given a slight inclination relative to Sarnus so that it's beautiful ring system can be seen from the surface?
-
With Slate not having some kind of atmosphere, I worry that (given it's size and gravity) it is now too similar to Tylo. I think that a very tenuous atmosphere, thinner than Dunas, would make an excellent addition and would give me more reasons to visit it. Don't get me wrong though, I love the new moons to bits!
-
I feel the same. The speed at which this mod has progressed and the quality of each aspect of it has really impressed me, I just wish Slate had some sort of atmosphere. It is unlikely that a cataclysm that happened so recently would have COMPLETELY removed it's atmosphere. I appreciate that you don't want to do a regular Titan analogue and I understand that seeing as we have Laythe and Eve. However, would it be possible to give Slate a very tenuous atmosphere? Thinner than Dunas - I would love to see something like Mohos old atmosphere from 0.17 sort of thickness but obviously not super-heated! Thanks!

Moho, Dres, Eeloo... No Atmosphere, No Moons, No Game
hazard-ish replied to CalMacDa's topic in KSP1 Discussion
At one point I visited all three in one launch (no refueling) with a manned lander and have never been back to any of them since. I think after than I don't think I need to go to them again... -
Wow, this was unexpected - thank you! I had a blast going through countless iterations of the challenge and I have to say, I felt a genuine shock of panic when I realized I forgot my parachute at the end!

The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Okay, sorry it's a little late but here is my submission for the level one challenge. Ion Gilly lander: 28,226 funds, 17 parts, 1.65 tonnes Eve lander/rover: 102,117 funds, 469 parts, 39.06 tonnes Complete rocket (including lifting stage) on launchpad: 603,198 funds, 600 parts, 928.27 tonnes Regarding the part count and weight awaiting lift-off on Eve, the stats are the same as the eve lander/rover mentioned above. I launched from an altitude of 7409 metres. I performed this in version 0.24.1. I used no mods at all, everything in this mission was completely stock. The rules say that I should provide information about how I found my landing site. I used the website 'Kerbal Maps' to find the highest point on Eve to launch from, landed in the rough area and kept on driving upward until the rest of the world was below me. I also performed the mission without refuelling - every aspect of the challenge was on the launchpad at the start and I used only one launch. I also visited Gilly as a bonus . Just in case my screenshots don't provide enough information or if anyone is simply interested, I had planned to do this mission before I saw this challenge and recorded my attempt as part of a stock career mode in version 0.24 where I landed and returned a kerbal from every planet and moon in the game - also completing the Jool 5 Challenge! The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hello! I posted a lot here a while ago detailing my mission plan but I have been so busy recently I have not had the time to perform it. Recently, however, I managed to spent the time to go through it. And go through it and go through it... roughly 8 times until I finally carried out the mission without quicksaves. Don't ask - I just don't like them I guess Anyway, I should be posting my entry here soon. I assume an imgur album is okay? -
Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to review my submission, I was really hoping there would be enough in those videos for you to judge my attempt because the actualy recordinf has since become corrupted to I can no longer edit it! Looks like I wont need to though. I realise that now, regarding the tylo landing efficiency, and let's face it: My vall landing was probably one of the most inefficient methods there is

The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I'm not really going for the lowest weight, actually, I don't know what the lowest weight is! I just wanted it to be as light as I could get it for my own satisfaction. I don't care about the cost of my mission, I have plenty of funds saved up on my career play-trough and I've planted flags on everywhere but Gilly and Eve. Also, this version isn't too laggy so the part count is not too much of a concern. I do have one question though. I am about to start recording the mission and I'd rather find out now rather than later. I also plan on visiting Gilly with a small ion probe as part of the mission to complete my career mode series on youtube, but it uses an external command seat to make the ion propulsion feasible. Is that okay? My actual Eve lander, as you saw, now includes a command capsule and the additional challenge of Gilly isn't mentioned on this forum so would my attempt still be accepted even if I visit Gilly with a command seat then Eve with a capsule? -

Haha, don't worry; I've found that out for myself! The final version will be a little more refined, don't you worry -
The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I've lost count of the number of times I've retried this mission. I've gone through several complete redesigns and countless other tweaks to each one in between. I've reached a point where I now think I can record my attempt today although I wont be uploading it just yet. Still, I think it's not time to show you what I've been working on and give you a quick run-through of the evolution of my designs. Please note: there may be some changes in my design when the time comes to go through with the whole thing but this is what I have at the moment and it's very unlikely to change too much. -
The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Cool, this seems to be a pretty good design then, it makes the horrifyingly long time I've been working on this thing worth it! I've gone through so many redesigns of this thing (looking at all of the names in the VAB, I'd say about 37), the first weighing just over 100 tonnes and not even working as a rover or a rocket. With any luck I will be able to go through with my mission and submit everything very soon. -
The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hey everyone. After being told that I can't use an external command seat for my lander, I had to redesign my lander. I say redesign, I just swapped the seat for a lander-can . Anyway, I've bult a lander that is not a flat, panckae disk of asparagus and is capable of acheving eve orbit from an altitude of about 6500-7000m with a little fuel to spare. My lander functions as a rover which is how I reach the high points (I'm not so good at precision landings yet) and the whole thing that actually lands on eve, icluding the detatchable rover extras, weighs 39.4 tonnes. Can someone tell me whether thst is any good? I don't know the actual weights of other landers I've seen. If anyone is interested, I will post some screenshots of my lander but I will end up doing so anyway later for my mission attempt when I go through with the whole thing. If anyone is iterested I will post some images although I will show it anyway later for my mission attempt when I go through with the whole thing. -
The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Haha, damn. That has certainly put a spanner in the works but is certainly something I can fix. My current design is capable of getting into orbit with quite a bit of fuel left from much lower on Ev'es surface than I expected so by adding only an extra 0.66 tonnes I might still be okay! Thanks for letting me know, at least I know now rather than after I've done the entire mission -
The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Haha, that pretty much sums it up. I don't use mods in my current career mode series on youtube and I would't consider doing so for (my first time at least) such a grand challenge as this. However, your description of my lander is pretty accurate. I also sadly only use a command seat for the lander (if that's okay?) I hope that isn't cheating in some way. One day I may attempt a the man lander but currently I've never returned from Eve so i'll stick to basics. I also built my design around using a rover to get to the highest point on Eve. However, after the wheels broke I decided to test launching from Eve from my current position and i turns out that my lander can get into an orbit with plenty of fuel to spare from an altitude of about 5100m. (I had aimed at launch from the highest point but more on that later). 36.6 tonnes if I remember correctly is what my lander weighs. It is either 346 or 446 parts (either is quite a lot!) and uses an extensive but simple asparagus system. I cannot post pictures now but I will do in the future! I've gone through many versions of my lander, some using aerospikes but I have since settled for the lightweight appproach (although I though 36 tonnes was a lot). My lightest Eve lander that is capable of orbit weighs 23 tones but requires being launched from the highest point on Eve, about 7500m above sea level. This is very hard to do, however, as I am not an expert in precision landings. I'll continue this mission log/profile/whatever later when I also have screenshots to back everything up and show you what I mean. Hopefully using a command seat and lots of asparagus has't made my attempt seem less impressive If it's any consolation, one of my initial concepts has a 54 stage asparagus system that took my about 90 minutes to get my head around and build at 2fps -
The Eve Rocks Challenge (v0.90 only)
hazard-ish replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I've been visiting this thread for a while now just to check on it. I am currently doing a career mode series on my youtube channel wher I also set my self the goal of performing a return mission (and planting a flag) on every object in the game without quicksaves. I have just recnelty completed the jool 5 challenge in my last few videos and all that remains now is an even return mission. Once my jool 5 challenge is all sorted out on the forums I will turn my attention to recording my entry for this challenge! (Again, without quicksaves). I've already conducted some tests and have got a pretty good eve lander that is definitely over-engineered but one of my favourite things i've every built too! It weighs just over 36 tonnes and the lander itself costs just under 100,000 funds. The lifting stage will require some tweaks but the entire rocket for the mission should cost no more than about 430,000 funds which would make it the lightest one yet For the mean time I will only be attempting the first level of the challenge but as an added bonus I will also visit gilly in the same mission. I will also be completing the challenge in version 0.24.2.
